Stud mark of doom Posted 4 January, 2015 Share Posted 4 January, 2015 Perhaps the clue is in the name. South Hampshire town Ton = town but hamp = home I think, from my Anglo Saxon, rather than Hampshire. Hence Northampton and Hampton not being in Hampshire. Stoozer Posted 4 January, 2015 Share Posted 4 January, 2015 Ton = town but hamp = home I think, from my Anglo Saxon, rather than Hampshire. Hence Northampton and Hampton not being in Hampshire. All from Anglo-Saxon Old English: Hampshire gets its name from Southampton. The shire around the town of "Hampton" often being refereed to as "Southamptonshire" in the past. Ham = Village/Estate. Hamm tun = Settlement near a water meadow. Hamtun/Hamton being early names for Southampton. Wic/Wick = Trading place. Hamwic = a combination of Ham and Wic another old name for the area. Although it has been suggested that Hampshire's "Wic(k)" derives from Roman "Vicus" meaning vicinity which could be likely due to the number of Roman settlements along the south coast. The "south" gradually became useful to differentiate between other "Hamptons". The pronunciation "town" has nothing to do with the word or place "Southampton". pap Posted 4 January, 2015 Share Posted 4 January, 2015 It was a good documentary, but as VFTT said, it's club propaganda too. Some parts of the video are directly lifted from other promotional materials the club has produced. No mention of Cortese. Didn't exist

Colinjb Posted 4 January, 2015 Share Posted 4 January, 2015 One of the most pleasing things about that is how Ralph Krueger came across. Compared to a year ago and in the summer his language and manner was far more direct, far more efficient with his wording and more assertive. I've been very critical of him in the past and had an uneasy feeling about the guy but he is certainly appearing at least to either be adjusting to meet the demands of his role or to have learnt from previous media appearances and tweaked his public persona to create a better impression. Saint-Armstrong Posted 7 January, 2015 Author Share Posted 7 January, 2015 Been speaking to speaking to some Americans, and they've said you have two types of 'soccer' fan in America. 1) Eurosnobs - Only interested in the big clubs in Europe, and do not follow MLS. 2) MLS fans - They follow their MLS club and generally take a wider interest, apparently. I received this message today, from a Chicago-based MLS fan. "We just had a documentary, "The Southampton Way", run on NBC Sports here in the states. The youth and scouting systems are remarkably similar. Good luck to the Saints this year. I hate Chelsea, Man U, and Man City and love you're giving them hell." That's probably not far from the truth, we do tend to me homers or like to follow perennial winners. But I'm with the person you quoted. I've never liked big spending, arrogant teams, both here in the Colonies and across the pond. So, when I went looking for a Premiership team to support (once I could watch on NBC Sports), I was delighted to find Saints! The club's history and approach of building players in their system ha many similarities to my local baseball club, the Minnesota Twins. Even the fan attitudes seem amazingly similar, so I feel at home. I loved The Southampton Way! It was great to see behind the scenes. It reaffirmed me choice of Saints. Now, if only I could find more Saints fans here in Minnesota! Cheers!

Now, if only I could find more Saints fans here in Minnesota! Cheers! This is pretty much my path as well. When EPL discussions crop up amongst friends and collegues, I always get a puzzled look when I mention I support and follow Southampton. Everyone's heard of Chelsea, City. United, Arsenal, Liverpool, so inevitably the next question that comes out of their mouths is: "why?" It's difficult to explain without coming off a little precious and/or snobby, but I muddle through it. I tend to not follow the heard and never been a bandwagoner. If I had an hour, I would show them the 1hr video, as that pretty much explains it all. And while I imagine it could convert someone looking for a club to support, I can also see the argument that it has a certain smugness about it. ie: we are doing it the "right way" kind of thing. But I always thought that ham = village and hamm = enclosure within the bend of a river, which would have been the geographical case, and ton or tun was a village, which would also have been correct originally. Then this continued in parlance as the community grew into what we would now recognise as town-sized l
Lazlo78 Posted 8 January, 2015 Share Posted 8 January, 2015 The feelgood factor of this "documentary" is immense! Others have pointed out the limitations and weaknesses of this video as a documentary, but that doesn't make it less of a pleasant viewing. And maybe, just maybe we'll have more faith in the people running the club, also when we've lost a few games. They care for the long perspective with sustainable solutions instead of quick fixes... The9 Posted 9 January, 2015 Share Posted 9 January, 2015 It's hard as an American to pick a team when we haven't grown up with it. I'm 43 and I've bounced around a few clubs watching and rooting for them but have been with Southampton the last 2ish years (I like Norwich City too but can't watch them across the pond). It is hard for 30/40 something year olds to pick a team out of the air in my opinion. I enjoy SFC as they most mimic my beloved New Jersey Devils (NHL). While they are **** now they have a really interesting history with a rag to riches theme that resulted in 3 championships as well as a history of developing lunch pail stars willing to work at both ends of the ice, not just being Prima Donna types. I know the EPL is different and unless there are some money rule changes this might not ever happen here. I love the idea of Southampton being very efficient at finding talent be it homegrown or from abroad and playing with an attractive style. It is a cope out to just pick an oil baron or money team in the Manchester clubs, Chelsea and the like on the continent. Southampton is the perfect club for Americans who appreciate hard work and idea of a small team making it big. My two cents.. If we develop a negative zone trap I'm blaming you.
