I was thinking yesterday, why are our sold out games these days so far short of our record attendance at St Mary's, 32,363? Even further short of capacity, 32,689. I know we've lost a few seats to camera positions etc, but 700+ seems a lot. Where else have we lost so many seats since the days in Championship when the record was set?

I think the actual saleable capacity has been reduced fairly significantly since we got back up. In the Kingsland stand, either side of the TV gantry, there are what I think are additional media seats in the rear handful of rows, so that's probably knocked a couple of hundred off, plus there's the segregation between home and away fans which we simply didn't bother with for that Coventry game which set the new record. The club wanted to go the extra mile to cram as many people in as possible, so I think there was just a line or two of stewards instead.

Difficult to know how they count the attendance in the corporate areas as boxes can fit up to 10 but a company who had a box for the season might have reduced numbers in there for some games.

Do they count season ticket holders whether they show up or not?

Yes, this tactic seems to be commonplace among clubs at all levels these days.

See this article as an example, Arsenal's attendances were - ON AVERAGE - more than 6000 down on capacity last season despite the "Sold Out" signs being up for nearly every game.

One attendance at Old Trafford apparently had a discrepancy of 25,000 between tickets sold and turnstile clicks

Here's some tweets I just posted with the assistance of statistics provided by The Telegraph.

No team has been better at defending set-pieces in the 2014/15 season than #SaintsFC , who have conceded just twice from set-pieces so far.

#SaintsFC have hit the woodwork 9 times so far in the 2014/15 season. Only #MCFC have hit the woodwork more times. They've hit it 11 times.

#SaintsFC have put in more tackles than any other Premier League sides, so far making 441 tackles in the 2014/15 Premier League season.

#SaintsFC defender @Nathaniel_Clyne has made 78 of those tackles, more than any other player in the Premier League this season.

#SaintsFC frontman @GPelle19 has had 59 shots in the 2014/15 season to-date, more than any other Premier League player.

#SaintsFC playmaker Dušan Tadić has put in 119 crosses so far, more than any other Premier League player so far in the 2014/15 season.

No team have dropped less points from winning positions than #SaintsFC, who have dropped just two in the 2014/15 season - against Chelsea.

Have always thought that it goes on tickets sold rather than bums on seats. Guess the boxes are considered full once hired.

Back of block 30-33 they took out the back 5 rows or so, to put in a journo part and expand the TV gantry. Reckon that that must have taken out 300-500 seats.

Coincidentally, probably one of the worst atmospheres I've experienced at SMS - could have heard a pin drop for about 85 minutes of that match.

Indeed. Disappointing given it was the first home game of the season too. Best guess for the low attendance and poor atmosphere is that there were those that saw what happened over the summer and thought it wasn't going to go well. They either didn't turn up or had low expectations.

Plus, that was one hell of a frustrating game.

School holidays, wasn't it.

Very good year this has been, especially considering where we were not so long ago. Seems over the past year or two, we have started to consolidate ourselves as at least a 'best of the rest' team, which is good progress. Can we break the top 6 though? Definitely think we can usurp the merseyside duo this year, but in the longer term worry they have more support and more resources. What do we all think?

Everton's fanbase is certainly bigger than ours, but looking at their most recent financials, they don't seem to be any better off than us. Their 2013/14 revenue increased to £120m, but best guesses would place ours not too far behind. In terms of long-term, they are a club that we should be aiming to overtake with sustainable growth, academy production, etc.

Liverpool are a huge worldwide brand and we've next to no chance of consistently outperforming them. We may have occasional seasons like this one where we do well and they struggle (relatively - I'd still expect them to finish above us in May), but they have resources way beyond our means, especially with the Financial Fair Play regulations now in force.

Blimey. Is that goals scored for us by the opposition, or does it includes goals we've scored for them?

We seem to do and get a lot of both!

I think its goals scored for us by the opposition.

We had Everton gifting us 3 own goals this year (Alcatraz, Coleman and Lukaku), and then Sunderland gave us 3 in our 8-0 win :) (Verging, Bridcutt and van Aanholt (that one taken away from Mane))
