West Ham Chairman's Comments

Saints related in that they are a rival this season, but just saw a couple of clips of a David Sullivan on Soccer AM and have looked their fan's reaction.

Wow, we are so lucky to have the kind of people we do running the club. Ralph's early stuff was cringe but he is new to the game, this muppet has been in football for 20 years.

Not sure what was worse, saying Managers are "nothing special" and rely on their scouting staff, or public ally announcing that Allardyce didn't want to sign Diafra Sakho (their best signing) and that basically he (Sullivan) signed him on deadline day because Fat Sam's targets didn't materialise. Sure Sam isn't happy with that being public, although he will leave end of the season anyway.

Also notice he said nothing about Maiga who was another of his signings apparently and they are still trying to pay off after a dismal few years.

He was scathing of their Academy for not producing anyone in the last four or five years. Well, if it's that bad then do something about it pal seeing as you are the guy in charge.

They are having a good season for certain, but with those types of characters at the helm it is more in luck than judgement. Utterly embarrassing.

Anyone else see it?

Aren't you glad we don't have people who say things like that running our club Charlie?

Yep. Are you? Imagine supporting a club run by Sullivan or Gold and having news of new signings announced by a 12 year old on Twitter.

The Sakho thing is bizarre to say, when everything is seemingly going well, why rock the boat and **** off a Manager who is doing a decent job?

Very. Couldn't think of anything worse than being run by someone who undermines the manager who us doing well, signs players behind his back who the manager knows nothing about. We're so lucky aren't we charles.

Just had a flick through their forum and they have a thread on kumb about saintsweb having a thread about them. "Turk" was mentioned as an in-sightful and level head bloke.

Shall we start a thread about their thread about our thread?! May cause some sort of internet-mongboard paradox!

Now you're having a go at Saint Armstrong? Give it a rest.

Not sure what's worse, saying managers are 'nothing special' or that they are nothing more than just a head of a department like someone else once said.

Nothing special is insulting both to you and your manager since you should try to hire someone special whenever possible. Head of a department sounds like an insult, but really it is true, particularly if you have a club where there are lots of other departments who do not report to the manager.

I thought being an utter pr ick to everyone you encounter was the only way to succeed in business. I learnt that somewhere once. I know it is the fast track way to get the chief exec role at AC Milan anyway.

Gold and Sullivan are bastards but they are West Ham's bastards.

Do you just feel like a head of department when you're on football manager?

Where is the evidence that Gold and Sullivan are bastards? unless people can produce evidence to give credence to their claims surely we should give them the benefit of the doubt. In any case, look at the league table, they're obviously doing something right, I'm sure west ham fans remember where they were 3 years ago and wake up every morning and say 'thank you' to their leaders.

Trevor Brooking said something about them but frankly he was nothing more than an employee of West Ham who was paid for his services at the time so really he should shut the fu ck up and not be allowed to buy tickets or something.

Cortese's quote was always intended to make a positive point rather than negative. Ie. The club success is down to more than just the manager (unlike the old football way of thinking).

I think you'll find he was imply the club success was down to him.

I think there's lots of ways you could take it. But I didn't take it that way at the time. Was he not speaking about a modern way of running a football club - when the manager leaves, it's not a problem as there's more to the system, than just him?

Unless you can find a video clip, or extended quote giving more context, I'm sticking with my take out!

I don't need a video clip or extended interview, just look at his attitude the whole time here. In any case the one thing he seems To have forgotten whilst belittling the role of manager is that if he fails then he takes every other department down with him.

Imagine, Ralph saying "Congratulations Portsmouth for your win last night."

Considering they drew yesterday i'd love it if he said that. Krueger the troll.

Whether we like it or not, he has been proved right. From Pardew to Adkins to MoPo to Koeman - we've got better and better and gone from strength to strength.

Exactly. One manager leaves, and we don't have to build from scratch again because the whole system isn't built around them. It's a genius set up.

Not sure about genius, but certainly the best possible set up for a club of our size and resources to be both sustainable and potentially competitive.

I think we were really lucky - because Lowe had invested in infrastructure, when down and out in L1 it was a perfect opportunity for ML and NC to build something without mega millions on new stadia etc... With what Marcus called a 'modest' investment, it was clear that he, NC and Reed all recognised that we were in perhaps a unique situation and able to rebuild all departments to bring about such a set up... Something most other clubs simply cannot do as it's always a hand to Louth existence - so many follow the 'tried and tested' go with new manager and let them do their thing....changing top to bottom... When it's works, great, but it causes major upheaval every time the manager changes.... And what's worse when a good one is poached?

We seem to be following the 'German' system - all sides from U8 upwards play the southampton way - we adopted a style we wanted to play and then recruit coaches and players who fit within it ..... Rather than recruiting a name manager and adapting everything including high numbers of players sales to bring in manager wishes.... It should be cheaper and more successful....

NC was not trying to insult managers with his statement! merely making a statement of fact that they should NOT be come irreplaceable! otherwise clubs end up with all eggs in one basket. In addition, the set up we have ensures continuity even if managers do go....

Its really only only now where the benefits of this set up are really clear .... We lost manager coaches and players in the summer , yet have been able to get better as we have that continuity... Yeah we still needed a bit of luck that the recruits would adapt quickly and fit in culturally, but it's surprised many, but perhaps least of all Reed, or even NC... Surmised me no end that it worked so well. Ultimately we have ML any NC to thank for putting it in place, and Reed and RKr + KL for making sure it was continued.
