Crazy Diamond Posted 17 December, 2014 Share Posted 17 December, 2014 On FF's point regarding us maybe benefitting from 'beginner's luck' this season... Just a thought, but is quality in the league a bit poor this season, bar perhaps Chelsea and City? Arsenal would be lost without Sanchez, Liverpool ARE lost without Suarez, there's nothing particularly remarkable about any side outside of the top two this season. Might explain why ourselves and West Ham have done as well as we have thus far.
Micky Posted 17 December, 2014 Share Posted 17 December, 2014 How can a post be 'sensible' as you see it when the writer says we must get in 3, 4 or 5 top quality players in the window? It is difficult enough to find and sign 2 top quality players in the whole of the summer window in between seasons when contracts are up and players are looking for new challenges. In January, no player worth his salt and embedded in a top side in any European League will want or be allowed to leave his club so you are left either to make unrealistically massive offers for stars - which we cannot afford - to prise them away or draft in people who spend most of their time on benches at other top clubs - implying that they are not really good enough anyway. So the sensible poster should sensibly explain where we will find these somehow over-looked superstars or the cash to buy them? Ron has already stated that nobody will be leaving in January so no money coming in from that direction. The best we can hope for is a loan or two of bench-warmers who might change the mix a bit but won't transform our fortunes. First sensible post I have read. The Cat Posted 17 December, 2014 Share Posted 17 December, 2014 I thought this was going to be a thread about the fight outside the ground after the game. Also, if you're going to let off a smoke bomb then do it in the stands rather than a cramped concourse. Thanks.
100%Red&White Posted 17 December, 2014 Share Posted 17 December, 2014 Not a lot to add, we were absolute sh*te last night and I fear it won't get much better over the next few weeks. All we can hope for is a bit of a shake-up in Jan and a change of fortunes come Feb. This is a 'fans' forum for supporters to vent their spleens but maybe the players should have their own forum where they can slag us. Great numbers last night but the support was on a par with the team. Sheff U's support was superb once it got going (and once they realised they did have a chance against a bunch of Premier prima donnas) it was loud, raw and in unison. I don't know what it was like on the lower tier, we couldn't hear anything from them in the upper, but up where we were it was poor. The only response to their lot was pockets of fans constantly repeating OWTS. It's fookin tedious and so fookin slow and does nothing to lift the side. We've 'only got one song', no, that's a lie, some tried a couple of times to get "Come on you Reds" for a couple of corners down our end and then realised they were playing in red. So next it was "Yellows, yellows" which gained momentum. We were playing in dark blue. We're proper 'Premier League fans' these days. Sh*te*. *I really couldn't give a fook if this offends some of our more sensitive fans btw.
Professor Posted 17 December, 2014 Share Posted 17 December, 2014 Only a 1-0 defeat away to one of the top sides in L1 so its encouraging to know that if we were back in L1 we could expect to be competing for promotion.
supersonic Posted 17 December, 2014 Share Posted 17 December, 2014 Got back at stupid o'clock after travelling what seemed like forever to get there and back, made a lot worse by the complete abject performance. Fair play to United, they wanted it a hell of a lot more than we did and rightfully won. Yet another decent cup opportunity squandered to a team a lot worse than ourselves. We missed Pelle, no doubt about it, we're geared up to play with a big man and are lacking of ideas when we don't have one. As was shown in the Championship without Lambert. Rodriguez can't come back soon enough IMO. Anyway here's my honest ratings for the match. Forster - Few decent saves, felt he was a bit unlucky with goal as he did well to get down to initial shot [Haven't seen the replay mind] (6/10) Clyne - Seemed reluctant to go forwards, and when he did his end product wasn't great. Ok performance but could have done better (6/10) Fonte - Lacked of leadership is worrying, head didn't seem in it. Looked shakey at the back and got caught out far too many times. Please stop letting the ball bounce (4/10) Gardos - Find it unbelievable that an International footballer cannot kick a ball with both feet. Might just be me but that worries me. Mistake lead to sending off (3/10) Target - Felt he looked ok - Didn't do himself any harm and looked hungry going forward. Unless he was injured, very unlucky to be subbed. Looks Promising (7/10) Bertrand - Awful, truly awful. Didn't look interested and got skinned far to many times. Too conservative to play as a winger. Miles off England level. (3/10) Wanyama - If he could kick a ball he'd be world class, harsh booking didn't do much wrong, but nothing of note stood out. (6/10) Schneiderlin - Our most talented player by a mile, need to keep hold of him, lacked match sharpness (6/10) Ward-Prowse - Passing ability is superb, went close with a free-kick, made himself an option and looked genuinely upset at end. Lacks match sharpness (7/10) Mane - Stealing a living as a footballer (0/10) Long - Felt he did well with what he had to work with, won a number of headers and made some good runs. (7/10) Isgrove - Relatively lively, but lacks end product. Probably last appearance in a Saints shirt. Will do well in lower leagues (6/10) Mayuka - Why do we still employ him? Probably contributed more sat on the bench (3/10) Alderweireld - Didn't really have much time to contribute, a few good passes but he's a centre-half not a midfielder (5/10)
Trout-Tickler Posted 17 December, 2014 Share Posted 17 December, 2014 Our inability to cause them any problems was very worrying. Can only remember their keeper making one save from Mane, that apart he could've been in his pipe and slippers the whole night. For me we just didn't work hard enough and want it as much as they did. Never was this more acutely highlighted than right at the end when their player ran to close down Fonte and then Bertrand who ultimately kicked the ball out of play. Hard work beats talent if talent doesn't work hard enough!

Um Bongo Posted 17 December, 2014 Share Posted 17 December, 2014 The thing with last night, was the chance for the club to do something different - Actually excite the fans. A semi final, no matter what cup competition, is always a great occasion, especially for a club like us. We now face the realistic prospect of our season 'dying' away with another mid table finish and boring end to the season. Although, we have come along way and shouldn't be complaining about this!!! Extremely disappointed however we are still 5th in the league - Let's not lose too much hope.

ART Posted 17 December, 2014 Share Posted 17 December, 2014 Excellent summary on the players supersonic bar Long where I can't agree with you. Same for Duncan's excellent post. We seem to have dug our hole and looks like we're not easily going to be able to save face or get out of it in the near future. How are we going to move players like Mané? Before the end of the last window I felt we should have signed up Andrew Surman from Norwich. He's have cost very little and under Koeman would have regained much of what left him after leaving Saints. Under Poortviet, Wotte, Surman and Cork were our star players. Why so many foreigners with little future and as of present few Academy players for the future. There's been a break down in the system somewhere and it needs sorting before we go hunting Champions League, Europa and top 5 places. More hast, less speed. Sheff Utd didn't even look that lively or up for it, that was the frustrating thing, we weren't bowled over in a classic cup tie, but just drifted out in a whimper. I can't agree with those saying about our players being tired, there is no reason for them to be. Plenty of other players around the country playing loads of games, matches twice a week etc. Look at Chelsea's line-up last night. Difference is, its easier to do when you're winning. Mane has definitely inherited the scapegoat coat, no doubt about it. Happened at a couple of home games, exactly the same as you had as well - moan moan, bloody mane....and it was wanyama....moan moan, keeps losing the ball...it was Clyne. I find it odd that anyone needs a scapegoat. If they play for Southampton they at least deserve support and he has, let's not forget, won us a couple of games this season. He's being portrayed as a complete villain, and whilst it's true he's having a bit of a bad time, he's no where near as bad as people are saying. Some way OTT comments. I love Tadic, rate him highly, but has he been much better in the last 3/4 games than Mane? Probably not, no. So why's he not coming in for the same level of vitriol? Dalek2003 Posted 17 December, 2014 Share Posted 17 December, 2014 I would rather that we hadn't had to play tonight. 5 yellow cards, 1 Red so players suspended fortunately haven't heard of any injuries, another poor game to shoot our confidence. A week of rest and recovery would have set us up better for the tough Christmas programme, it seems ridiculous to have the League Cup Quarter Final just before a tough Christmas period of games. It's not a question of just the next league match it could be the knock on effect for several league games to come. I would sacrifice being a few places lower in the league for a cup run but does being knocked out tonight rather then in the last round really have achieved anything? It sums up for me that I'm not sad about getting knocked out but I am about the performance and the accumulation of unnecessary yellow/red cards. Having said all that I do understand why some find the drama of the cup compelling and in the past I felt the same but the prestige of the Premier League wins hands down for me now a days. Just what I was saying back in September. We would have been better making a dignified exit and to concentrate on the league. But, I was lambasted for my very rational opinion. Because the majority are obsessed with cheap cup success, they want their day out at Wembley and don't see any further than that. We should have played the U21s last night, good experience for them, no first team injuries or cards and the result could not have been worse anyway. Basically our U21s should be capable of giving Sheffield Utd a run for their money anyway. So against Ipswich we play the kids, sell cheap tickets and then no-one will turn on the senior players should we lose. We have our backs to the wall and we need to fight for every point, if necessary by parking the bus, nicking points and playing ugly. We are not in a relegation fight yet, but we cannot afford to be complacent.

So against Ipswich we play the kids, sell cheap tickets and then no-one will turn on the senior players should we lose. What a load of ********. Some of us fans don't just want a day at Wembley, we want to see our side win trophies, a proper trophy, one that no one can ever take away from us. 20 odd continuous seasons in the top flight was great, but I'd swap them all for a title. The league cup is not a title, but one major trophy in our existence is poor and last night was an opportunity to go one step closer to making it two. If you don't want to see us win trophies why the **** are we playing the game? My tuppence worth about last night. Decent turn out, perhaps a little muted, but we had very little to shout about. Its up to players to get the crowd lifted as United did. It's got to the stage in my life where witnessing events is almost as important as seeing us win and I actually was not concerned about going behind. I foolishly thought that we would fight back and I'd be lucky enough to witness a great cup tie come back win. I couldn't be further from the truth. We melted. We folded. We lost our composure and we showed just exactly how frail we are with the current attacking players available to us. When you go a goal down you pass and pass an press and unlock them. Or you can do as we did and hood it allowing their tall centre back to have an easy night. Mane may have become a scapegoat, but last night he was woeful. That said I think saints fans that booed him off are stupid. We need him firing, who else is there? Bertrand was just as bad. A complete waste of space at left midfield. Why target was subbed instead of him I will never know. Long tried hard as always, but he is so limited its not true. The trouble is he was our biggest threat, which says it all. Isgrove fell over his feet, looked a little out of his depth and then disappeared. Boy do we miss Lallana. You will see that I have focused on our attack. That's where we are struggling. I thought midfield were solid and controlled the game right up until we needed them to after the goal. Morgan had a good game but Prowse has still some way to go before he's a top player. Wanyama played his usual game. Anything over ten yards and that possession turned over. At the back by and large we looked fine, except for Gardos. Now I know why Yoshida gets a game. I thought Fonte played well. Clyne was a disappointment. He gave fonte no angle for a pass on numerous occasions and went too narrow too. Forster made two good saves but he flapped for crosses and since Villa has lost all confidence when deciding when to come and when not. Normal service has resumed at SFC. It wasn't as bad as Oldham, Luton or tranmere, but these big midweek cup nights all leave a scar.

For a club our size, the number of Semi Finals/Finals and Cups we've got to show for our efforts just isn't good enough.
simo Posted 17 December, 2014 Share Posted 17 December, 2014 I'm hoping the wrath of the fans has given the players a reality check and make them stop believing the hype surrounding them and kick on again !
simo Posted 17 December, 2014 Share Posted 17 December, 2014 I will yes - I support the team and go to games through thick and thin. Missed a handful of home games in last 10 years or so. 7 or 8 aways a season as well. DId you get a season ticket 3 yrs ago? People like you make me laugh. You post your hysterical stuff, I comment with sense of perspective yet you think I am trying to pick a fight. I can't help but insult you though. Ah but did you go to hartlepool 3 years ? My son has had a season ticket for longer than that you try to come across holier than thou but it doesn't work! I like many others pay my money so are entitled to a say ! If you don't like it I won't lose any sleep ! And trust me you wouldn't insult me in person only when safe behind your keyboard
derry Posted 17 December, 2014 Share Posted 17 December, 2014 One thing that did stand out in recent matches and last night and mainly when we haven't played our best back four. The midfielders are no longer running the channels and getting into the box on the burst as they together with the full backs scored plenty of goals. JWP didn't do it once and he was the ten. Passing the ball around without the hard forward runs we were doing early on in the season won't trouble defences.

Chez Posted 17 December, 2014 Share Posted 17 December, 2014 Just seen the goal again. I didn't realise what a howler it was from Forster! Not seen it again, should he have held it? Still, annoyed at Mane for giving the foul away. **** poor play by him.
SFC Chris Posted 17 December, 2014 Share Posted 17 December, 2014 I must have watched a different match to a lot of others last night, Mane was not even close to being our worst player. It was laughable listening to people in the stands last night badmouthing him for others mistakes. At one point the bloke in front of me had a mini epileptic episode when Wanyama lost the ball, and he thought it was Mane. Perhaps that was you? Are you seriously suggesting that Mane's performance was anywhere near acceptable? He was absolutely awful. I lost count of how many moves broke down because of him. He was our least effective player with only Bertrand anywhere near as bad. Considering how poorly the rest of them played that says a lot. We cannot play 1 up front without Pelle, that much is abundantly clear. At least one new striker is absolutely required in January.

Who's the keyboard warrior? If you pot opinion here you should be prepared to have it responded to. How it works as I understand

Crazy Diamond Posted 17 December, 2014 Share Posted 17 December, 2014 Ah the old 'I've been a fan longer than you' debate. Classic. I've really missed these moments.
simo Posted 17 December, 2014 Share Posted 17 December, 2014 Nearly said the same thing. We are so similar and could be friends. I came close to meeting unbelievable Jeff last night with whom I have similar conflicting views and arguments and like I said to him I hold no bad feelings and was (almost) looking forward to buying him a beer obviously your insults were going to draw a reaction we'll call a temporary truce
Lets B Avenue Posted 17 December, 2014 Share Posted 17 December, 2014 I wouldn't bother biting to that rubbish, the vast majority of Saints fans would agree with you. For a club our size, the number of Semi Finals/Finals and Cups we've got to show for our efforts just isn't good enough. You will have noticed that the two idiots spouting that tripe live in a) France and b) Norwich and rarely attend games. I love the way that WC has reinvented himself, in the past year, as some sort of "Alpine Lite" character. The other waste of space needs should have been banned years ago. The League Cup has been going for 55 seasons now. We have reached 1 Final and 1 other Semi-Final. That is truly pizz poor.
Unbelievable Jeff Posted 17 December, 2014 Share Posted 17 December, 2014 Are you seriously suggesting that Mane's performance was anywhere near acceptable? No, what a strange conclusion to come to from what I wrote.

Can assure you I fume after bad results as much as the next man. Can be same anger vented at people on here though although conscious it can turn into a sport responding to contrary views.
