Sheff Utd 1-0 Saints Post match carnage.

Toby is one of our best players,

He is better than gardos

You said he played out best side

He didn't

It should have been enough to beat a league 1 side

Wrong discussion.

Isn't Toby on the right (nearer where he plays for Belgium) and Florian on the left a better unit that accommodating Jose as he's captain ?

As when we do we have 1 central defender who is being played out of position, if Jose doesn't play then the entire back 4 is playing to their strengths.

No bad luck involved here, we just weren't good enough and team confidence is taking a real hammering. The good thing is they seem to be taking it on the chin as a team rather than blaming each other. Right now it is hard to see a way out of the hole we are digging for ourselves and it could get a whole lot worse after Saturday with half our spine missing. 1-0 defeats are hard to take but allow claims of being unlucky, anything bigger (v Everton) like 3-0 might have a really damaging effect on team morale and cohesiveness.

Just back from the game.

What a thoroughly pathetic performance that was. There wasn't a lack of effort, there was just a massive lack of quality. Little belief on the ball, poor technique, terrible movement, no cohesion, no-one being brave, being outfought, not thinking properly. 11 strangers on the pitch. Schniederlin by far our best player, he deserves far better than to play with the mess out on show tonight.

Gardos was an absolute car crash tonight, for a big lad he is soft and slower than an 80 year old running in wellies.

Hate JWP in forward positions, Mayuka is a joke (think Ali Dia), Long winds me up no end - such a nothing player, and a left back starting a game on the wing.

As for the support, there were far too many people there tonight looking for trouble and it was embarrassing. Saw one Saints fan punch another on the concourse after the game - pathetic.

We lacked so much quality and spirit tonight it was disheartening. These are professional footballers and far too many of them looked like they didn't fancy the pitch (which was shocking) and conditions (which weren't great but they're professionals - deal with it). But you get on with it and you adapt - we couldn't adapt and paid the price. Confidence is absolutely shot - time for Koeman to figure some things out.

Just got home after stopping via the local to drown my sorrows. I don't think I have the words to adequately describe just how utterly sh*te we were tonight.

No desire, no quality, no creativity, no fluidity, no incisiveness, and no goal threat whatsoever - against an average L1 team who simply wanted it more than we did.

We managed one measly shot on target, which fell to Mane who tamely hit it straight at the keeper. Other than that, JWP hit a FK not far off, and that was about it.

Utter, utter crap Saints. I haven't been this depressed about a result since we lost away to Tranmere in our L1 days. Complete sh*t and I hope those players who 'played' tonight are going to issue a public apology to the 4000 or so fans who completely wasted their time travelling up to watch such total ineptitude.

I have been quite defensive of the team throughout our recent bad run, pointing to bad luck and injury problems as the root cause of our slump. But after tonight I am left seriously wondering where out next league points are going to come from.

I'm only glad I don't have a 3-4 hour drive home.

I got shot down for calling this result after the Arsenal defeat: http://www.saintsweb.co.uk/showthread.php?52596-Arsenal-Match-Thread&p=2091629#post2091629

Not only is confidence low, the team looked poor against Villa, even before the run of defeats. I don't know what has happened but it's the way I thought saints would play under koeman before the season started.

first sensible post I have read

How can a post be 'sensible' as you see it when the writer says we must get in 3, 4 or 5 top quality players in the window? It is difficult enough to find and sign 2 top quality players in the whole of the summer window in between seasons when contracts are up and players are looking for new challenges. In January, no player worth his salt and embedded in a top side in any European League will want or be allowed to leave his club so you are left either to make unrealistically massive offers for stars - which we cannot afford - to prise them away or draft in people who spend most of their time on benches at other top clubs - implying that they are not really good enough anyway.

So the sensible poster should sensibly explain where we will find these somehow over-looked superstars or the cash to buy them? Ron has already stated that nobody will be leaving in January so no money coming in from that direction. The best we can hope for is a loan or two of bench-warmers who might change the mix a bit but won't transform our fortunes.

It's hard to single out one player from the dross tonight, but I have to question - why on earth did we pay such money for Mane? The guy is just a total headless chicken who totally disrupts the whole balance of the team as nobody else has the slightest idea where he is, where he is supposed to be, and what he is going to do. Just how badly does he have to play before he gets dropped? I cheered when he got subbed tonight (which is not something I would normally do) but then groaned when it was announced he was being replaced by somebody equally as inept as him - Mayuka.

Mane may be infuriating but of all the players on the pitch tonight he was always the most likely to make something happen. His general play may have been of a poor standard, but for me he was putting himself about and in positions to make something happen. Long worked hard but was still Shane Long. Bertrand - just no, never again on the wing please. JWP - no point playing him so far up the pitch if he is going to pass it 10 yards further back than the person he received the ball from. Mayuka - well, words fail me. Looks like a lost boy out there.

I've plenty of confidence in Koeman, but I get the sense he and others had forgotten how weak a squad they had inherited. We have a system that is dependent on 11 players all being on form - and no plan B if that's not the case.

If there is one positive (and this is a stretch) it's that the need for major strengthening in January is glaringly obvious.

At least I feel like a Saints fan again.

This

A quiet voice of reason amongst all the hyperbole.

This isn't sour grapes but the ref was awful. Got so many decisions wrong in both directions and there should never have been 8 bookings.

And why was he wearing Saints colours (in reverse)? Second time recently that's happened and I wonder if it's distracting/confusing?

But the key point was we made no chances, had no-one to finish in any case and didn't want it as much as they did. We used to be first to most 50:50 balls. We won almost none tonight, particularly towards the end.

Confidence, spark and energy have gone. Time for RK to show what he can do when the going gets tough.

We were not World beaters when we were 2nd and we are not the worst team in the world now. What is really hacking me off though is the bedwetters are out in force again after several months of relative peace.

Hey, I'm usually the most optimistic, happy-clappy, 'give-them-the-benefit-of-the-doubt' guy you will find on this forum after a defeat. But I have just been and watched the most pathetic team performance I have ever seen dished up by a Southampton team in over 25 years of watching them. Not one single player came out of tonight's game with any credit.

If we had given it a good go, created a few chances, put up a fight but just got unlucky then I wouldn't be concerned. But not one fan who was there tonight to witness that will try and convince you that was the case. we were complete and utter gash, and failed to create a single noteworthy effort on goal against an average L1 team. That is the long and short of it.

We've had plenty of games which were as bad or worse than that. It's barely 2 years ago we lost 6-1 to Arsenal and Sunderland in the Cup was as bad last year. There were plenty of dreadful games the season we went down from the Championship and a fair few the year before when we narrowly stayed up.

Losing at Bristol Rovers in the Cup was easily as bad as tonight

No as it happens. You a better fan then?

I prefer to call myself a supporter , we actually get out and support the team so I think we have more right to spit out our dummies than the likes of you who just goes around slagging other fans off

I did Arsenal, Sunderland and Rovers but I'd say tonight was a worse performance than the lot in comparison, arse and Sunderland are both Prem teams and there was only 1 league between us and Rovers now we are a top half premier league team and them league 1

Yes, I agree with this. Even allowing for the mitigating circumstances – injuries, suspensions, low confidence after run of defeats etc – that was a woeful performance, and I think that fans, especially those that made the long trip to Sheffield, are entitled to express their anger and frustration. Doesn't mean they're bedwetters on this occasion, imo - with the odd exception, of course.

I have come to the conclusion after dwelling on the cup exit for a couple of hours, that we could borrow the Real Madrid team for a day, put them in Saints shirts for a midweek cup game up North and they would suddenly become terrible and we would crash out in an all too familiar unspectacular fashion. It's just what Saints do. After a lifetime of it, you would think I would get used to it , but it's the hope that kills you..

So, whoever texted in Solent to say that the team are 'a disgrace to the city' - have you had chance to calm down yet?

Holy f*cking Chr1st, as if!

I'm as gutted as anyone but its clearly just a run of bad form and bad luck, much like last season (eerie). We will pull ourselves out of it. Everton home game, lets do this. COYR.

Just got back. Shambolic performance - a neutral would have picked us as the League One side. I can't find words to describe Mane and Mayuka but clearly we need strengthening. Got soaked walking back to the car and then stuck in road works on the M1 to round off a super day!

I'm over the disappointment of losing already. The bigger disappointment is that we still have the Saints mentality of old. If you're looking for bad results, I think Tranmere away and Watford away were still way above this one. Not sure if that's a positive or not ;)

What's the saying? Form is temporary, class is permanent? I've had enough of this temporary cr4p. Heads up lads!

Sunshine I'll wager I've been to more games than you.

family and work commitments mean midweek aways are impossible.

Support the team? Make me laugh you tw#t. Nothing more than hysterical baby with no perspective.

And aren't you not bothering with Everton game? A true supporter will support through thick and thin.

Wheels were off after the Burnley game. Morgan will be off in January. If he persists with Mane Koeman will be gone by the end of the season. Everton werent that great Monday night, if we drop Mane we can turn this around. Throw the Jonah overboard Ronald. Dont be a tit.

Dear me
