Nigel Adkins Sacked

I wouldn't like to disappoint you.

No great surprise he's sacked, never nice for anyone I'm sure.

Hope he finds employment soon.

BUT....he came up very short for us.....he got the plaudits for our achievements, and rightly so....to a point.

But with what he had at his disposal.....and let's look at where those players are now.....he failed.

We came 2nd....to other sides who were woefully less equipped than us.

Summed up when we got battered by Reading at home.

We played well within ourselves....and when needed to step up....we failed.

He landed on his feet with us and let's not forget it.

He owes us more than we owe him....he failed at reading because he's mediocre.

Cheer up, if you're lucky Nigel might run over you in his bus.

Nigel did a brilliant job here equalling the achievement of Ted Bates - at least statistically. The players loved playing for him and he is a real gent - ironically the only thing that prevents him being truly successful. For me his understanding of the game exceeds several existing premier league managers so would not be surprised to see him at a QPR, Leicester or Burnley type club.

Good call. Another factor which hindered Nigel, in my opinion was his assistant Andy Crosby and also Dean Wilkins - needs a better support team around him.

Finally some sense. He is tactically very conservative and this cost us the league. Also stand by what I said all along that he inherited a very good team from Pardew, not many of NA's signings turned out to be decent (Clyne stands out as a very good one though)

I can't believe that even after all this time, you are still frantically trying to justify your outlandish views back in the L1 days. I don't get it.

He got us 2 promotions, he did a great job and your views back in L1 were fundamentally flawed - so stop trying to continuously justify them.

Pochettino also inherited a good squad, does that make him less of a manager? Back to back promotions was no mean feat and if he hadn't have been sacked I think he would have had continued to be a good manager for us. I was upset when Pardew was sacked but I can't fault NA and hope he gets another chance in the Premiership soon.

He made himself look an utter cuunt with his anti-Adkin's rambles in L1 and continues to do so.

Will always be a Saints legend for me, not only did he take us back up through the leagues but he did so with calmness, humour and good football. Not liked a Saints manager so much since WGS.

Nobody's perfect and he did make mistakes with us, but I would love to see him at another ambitious club with a decent budget to be given a fair crack of the whip. If that means dropping down to L1, so be it.

The Reading job has been a tough one.

There's been no money. Worse than that, the disappearance of the owner has meant they were forced to sell players like Le Fondre to pay their tax bills and stay afloat.

He's been forced to play kids this season (including two young and inexperienced CBs in that defeat against Birmingham). Maybe he could have done a bit better, but it's been a fire fighting job in many respects.

I'll always love the bloke for what he did at Saints.

I don't remember being battered by Reading at home. I remember a smash and grab.

Congrats on getting the Reading job, Steve. You won't be on here as much from now on. All the best.

As I said at the time (becoming a theme recently, don't worry, I'll be back to predicting stuff like Sharp to be better than Lambert in the Prem soon), I didn't understand why Adkins took the Reading job and put himself in a situation of either having to miraculously keep them up or then get them back up, when he'd already proven he could get out of the Championship AND stay in the Prem with Saints.

If he'd waited a few months longer he might have been in contention for Stoke, Sunderland or Crystal Palace and the chance to build a side with a bit more Prem experience. His choice meant he needed to prove himself again at the same level he'd already achieved, and short of taking Reading to the Prem top half, he could only damage his reputation from that point.

Nevertheless, he was superb for Saints, and anyone saying otherwise is a total idiot.

Sounds like he has been stitched up royally there, steve clarke's been sniffing around and accepted that job knowing full well Adkins would get the boot. Very familiar to his sacking with MoPo and the way cortese approached it.

He's a good man and deserves better. Hope he can get himself a proper job as a result of all this. Also hope that Steve Clarke gets relegated.

Good man no doubt but his results at Reading are pretty appalling, he's been sacked because of that. He's got exactly what his Reading results have earned him I'm afraid.

Are you remotely aware of what has been going on at Reading? Was chatting to two Reading fans in the office today and they both say the same. There was little more the bloke could do, his hands have been tied pretty much.

I read HobNob forum from time to time yes, the fans wanted him out, perhaps they don't understand what's going on at their club either eh. They've got new owners and those people have decided that Adkins results just aren't good enough, they pay the piper and call the tune, all the rest is unimportant. They have sunk to 16th in the Championship despite having expensive players like Ferdinand and Gunter on their books. Bad results in professional football will get managers the sack, fact of life I'm afraid.

Nigel did a fantastic job for us, end of story. How could he have done better, won the PL? The Championship has long been regarded as extremely competitive, and under his guidance we flew through it no bother. I don't remember Nigel losing 5 on the bounce either. Good luck to him in the future and I hope we see him managing the opposition at St. Mary's one day.

MP inherited a very good team also. And we played some of the best football i've ever seen. What is your point? The man deserves proper respect from saints fans.

Sharp? Cork? Rodriguez? Steven Davis? Chaplow? Fox? Hooliveld? All did well at the level they were signed at and some continue to thrive in a top half premier league squad.

'Cost us the league' - yes because two promotions were terrible weren't they. I suppose you'd have done a better job?

'Tactically conservative" we were highest goalscorers and had the best goal difference. Other than all that and what has been said above, supersonic is spot in.

If anything I'd say Brighton and then Reading were more conservative than Saints. They won the League because they were consistently better at being one goal better than the opposition but I believe Saints were the better team in both seasons. We just got undone by some bay off days, like losing home and away to Rochdale and Bristol City.

Once Brighton got promoted they weren't one goal better any more, hence they finished well below us. Likewise Reading when they got promoted and went straight back down, whilst Saints and West Ham were more competitive.

We would have won the Championship were it not for one of the most bizarre refereeing decisions I've ever seen at Boro in the penultimate game. One of their defenders fouled Lallana when through on goal. The ref gave the foul but didn't even book the defender (who was already on a yellow) despite it being a blatant straight red.
