No surprise, they've struggled of late. Has he had much money to spend there? Perhaps a little unfair of them to expect a promotion push as a given, it's a tougher league than ever before and Reading aren't the biggest of clubs.

only a week after receiving full support of the board and owner too!

Thrown off the bus.

Hmmmmm. Liked him. Nice guy. Loved his energy and positive attitude.

Hindsight is great - I do think he is limited from a tactical point of view. I remember his comments on MoTD when he was quizzed on formation after a poor performance and his response was along the lines of being required to play 4-3-3 ('cause that's what this club does).

Shame. Nice guy. Sure he'll pick up another club quickly.

Tough gig there all in all.

Still a Saints legend and a great manager for us.

But maybe not the New Alex Ferguson/Greatest Ever Young English Manager some giddy souls on here had him down as.

Shame, I understood he never wanted the job but took it because they offered him a stack of cash. Good bloke, I am sure he'll pick up a Championship or L1 role very soon.

Posted

Shame, he went into the season without adequate backing due to the mystery disappearance of that Russian chap, and only recently has a takeover happened.

Bangor - success

Scunny - success

Saints - success

Reading - failure

He should get a good job, good luck to him.

Nigel is better off out of Reading. He will be back in work soon. Top bloke

This.

Unfortunately I can't see him back in the Premier League ever again, but he will do a very good job for a Championship club.

Posted

Always thought he would be a decent manager for England U-21. Might get them playing some decent cohesive football. Can't be any worse than Stuart Pearce standing there shouting.

Their board has been the problem. My mates a big royals fans and most of fans were backing him. He's been playing youth not to dissimilar to our Wotte era because they won't give him the funds.

Hope he gets a decent job. Still a Saints legend.

I recently went to Reading for a job interview, after the takeover was completed. There were a lot of people at the club not knowing what was going to happen to them whilst the takeover was stalling, a lot of players were forced to wait to sign new deals as they didn't want to give them out whilst it was in the balance. Can't have been easy for Nigel but results weren't good either.

I think a reality of his success with us was that we had by far the biggest wage budget in League One and threw a lot of resources at Championship promotion, he's unlikely to get that somewhere else. His job at S****horpe though was fantastic.

People genuinely worried that Liverpool of England would try and take him off us

Great guy and did well for us.

Is he really any worse than Dalglish, Hodgson, Schteve or Brenda? We may have only been 15th when he was sacked but Poch only took us up to 14th by the end of the season.

Supposing he had kept his job and taken us to 8th like Poch did then following year. He could have ended up somewhere like Liverpool or Spuds.

He was mental to take the Reading job in the first place and if the reports of mega cash are true, then he swapped his medium term future for a bit of lucre and continuing status as a Premier League manager, at a time when he had the sympathy and respect of the footballing world. All he had to do was bide his time and he might have landed a job at a club that wasn't plummeting out of the league. We of all people know how difficult it is to bounce back up.

Accordingly, NA gets a ton of respect for the tremendous back-to-back promotions we enjoyed. I've seen the flat track bully argument, that anyone could have steered Saints upward given the resources at the club's disposal. Interesting, but ultimately pointless. NA did achieve it, and I'll be thankful to him for that forever.

His next choice of job will be interesting. Rightly lauded at Scunny, but reached his level. Did very well with us, but was out of his depth in the Prem. I just hope he takes a wee bit more time deciding, although his options are going to be nothing like the ones he had after getting bounced out of here.

Ah right, so they probably think they can get a duffer to finish 16th and pay him a lot less. Never thought his heart was in it.

I told my 8yo nipper that he had been sacked, and he asked howlong he had been there for. I said 2 and a bit years, and his reply, was not a bad run (or words to that effect). He's a good manager and maybe it will do him no harm to drop a league and bring a team up again. To be honest, I would be happy enough with him back here, but guess that we might think that we have moved on.

The one thing I hope that happens, is that the Mail now stops putting all the Reading stories under the Saints page as they have been whenever NA is mentioned.

Has anyone who's left saints in the last couple of years gone on to raise their profile (I mean in playing/Managing progression not which club they went to)?

calling saintlard to the main board!

I wouldn't like to disappoint you.

No great surprise he's sacked, never nice for anyone I'm sure.

Hope he finds employment soon.

BUT....he came up very short for us.....he got the plaudits for our achievements, and rightly so....to a point.

But with what he had at his disposal.....and let's look at where those players are now.....he failed.

We came 2nd....to other sides who were woefully less equipped than us.

Summed up when we got battered by Reading at home.

We played well within ourselves....and when needed to step up....we failed.

He landed on his feet with us and let's not forget it.

He owes us more than we owe him....he failed at reading because he's mediocre.

He did great things with us. Will quite rightly be a saints legend whatever happens.

BUT this next job is key for his reputation in the greater footballing world.

Choose carefully Nigel!

He probably would find it beneath him but assistant manager at Bournemouth i feel he could really add some valuable input alongside howe and reinforce their outside chances of finishing in the top two

You've heard? He never talks about it, I'm surprised anyone knows.

Living in Lancashire, local radio gives you a different perspective on 'regional' football to that you might get with Solent ;-)

Nigel did a brilliant job here equalling the achievement of Ted Bates - at least statistically. The players loved playing for him and he is a real gent - ironically the only thing that prevents him being truly successful. For me his understanding of the game exceeds several existing premier league managers so would not be surprised to see him at a QPR, Leicester or Burnley type club.

Posted

As one of only 3 Mangers to get us promoted to the top flight , he will always be a legend to me. Of course he's not Ted or Lawrie, but the championship season was one of the most enjoyable I can remember in 40 odd years of following the club.

tha's absolutely normal for outgoing managers.

The "full support of the Board " .....is the kiss of death for a struggling manager. Take note Brendan.

Posted

What a shame. It's strange to think the path his career might have taken had Cortese sacked him in the summer after he'd guided us to safety. He might still have been managing in the Premier League somewhere.

Posted

Tough on NA, but that's football at the moment. All sorts of nonsense going on in the background at Reading, so sack the manager. Hardly surprising that they have been struggling this season. Whoever comes in is likely to struggle as well.

Don't think that NA quite cuts it in the top half of the Prem, but he was good for Saints and would have kept us up in the first season. Two promotions and one of the good guys in football. He kept his dignity when he left Saints.

To be fair, it wasn't just saints fans talking him up for the england job. While we were shooting up the leagues, he was perceived pretty widely in the press as the great young hope for england.
