Whitey Grandad Posted 10 December, 2014 Posted 10 December, 2014 Thanks, I was there! Was it really 20 years ago? Seeing Le Tiss again makes me very tearful, will we ever see his like again?
Wes Tender Posted 10 December, 2014 Posted 10 December, 2014 Thanks for posting that. We ought to have drawn at least, as the penalty for Shearer was farcical and Charlton had a stonewall penalty denied him. Interesting to be reminded that refereeing was ever sh*te.
Dark Munster Posted 10 December, 2014 Posted 10 December, 2014 Contains my favourite MLT goal of all time. Shame it was a consolation goal.
KelvinsRightGlove Posted 10 December, 2014 Posted 10 December, 2014 Question, what was the reaction like to Shearer leaving? It was a bit before my time, and I don't think I've ever really seen anyone make much mention of it. I'm guessing he wasn't as loathed for it as Lovren/Lallana?
Sour Mash Posted 10 December, 2014 Posted 10 December, 2014 Thanks, I was there! Was it really 20 years ago? Seeing Le Tiss again makes me very tearful, will we ever see his like again? F*****g hell, 20 years ago, unbelievable. I did like our mid-90s side, Le Tiss in his prime and a fair few characters in the mix. Got thrashed away a couple of times a season, god knows what the reaction would be like on here to some of our away performances, different era I guess.
The Cat Posted 10 December, 2014 Posted 10 December, 2014 Imagine the state of this place if we shipped 7 goals to an average Everton team now.
View From The Top Posted 10 December, 2014 Posted 10 December, 2014 (edited) Imagine the state of this place if we shipped 7 goals to an average Everton team now. I left after 20mins at 5-0 and was back in my local in Stafford for full time. I'd been on the ale and banging a MILF the night before and slept in the car all the way there and back again. Happy days. I was also there for the Blackburn game. Edited 10 December, 2014 by View From The Top
positivepete Posted 10 December, 2014 Posted 10 December, 2014 What was Brucey doing to Shearer just before the first goal?
Halo Stickman Posted 10 December, 2014 Posted 10 December, 2014 Question, what was the reaction like to Shearer leaving? It was a bit before my time, and I don't think I've ever really seen anyone make much mention of it. I'm guessing he wasn't as loathed for it as Lovren/Lallana? Who needed Shearer, we were getting Dixon and Speedie! Seriously though, I think any ill-feeling towards Shearer at his leaving was diluted by all the animosity aimed at Branfoot.

You can't use the term "MILF" for something that happened before the term was invented in 1999, you'll create a wormhole in time, or something.
The9 Posted 10 December, 2014 Posted 10 December, 2014 Who needed Shearer, we were getting Dixon and Speedie! Seriously though, I think any ill-feeling towards Shearer at his leaving was diluted by all the animosity aimed at Branfoot. From my not-particularly involved recall of it, people just accepted that he was going to make loads of money from going to moneybags Blackburn and accepted it. Weird to think what passed for big-spending back then when you look at how much Saints have spent in the past 6 months alone.
Dellman Posted 10 December, 2014 Posted 10 December, 2014 tHERE WAS SO MUCH AGGRO AGAINST BRANFOOT THAT THE SHEARER LOSS WAS JUST PAR FOR THE COURSE

Seriously though, I think any ill-feeling towards Shearer at his leaving was diluted by all the animosity aimed at Branfoot. I do remember Shearer when he came back to the Dell giving MLT a bit of an eye ball to eye ball wind up before MLT was about to take a penalty. That make me not like him after that. Anyone remember it? What game was it? That said, I like Shearer now.

Coxford_lou Posted 10 December, 2014 Posted 10 December, 2014 That was the game? I wish they showed the confrontation, I couldn't forgive Shearer for years after that! Do you know what year it was?
Lets B Avenue Posted 10 December, 2014 Author Posted 10 December, 2014 That was the game? I wish they showed the confrontation, I couldn't forgive Shearer for years after that! Do you know what year it was? 16/4/94. The week after the 5-4 win at Norwich. I missed both as I was in Barbados seeing England win a test match. Which was more of a shock than Saints winning.
Coxford_lou Posted 10 December, 2014 Posted 10 December, 2014 Really? Wow. How do you remember that? I think it was my first exposure to football players being less than honourable with each other, and I was horrified.

I think it was my first exposure to football players being less than honourable with each other, and I was horrified. You don't forget watching England win an away test, especially when a stranger tells you during the lunch break that Saints won 5-4. Monkou got a hat-trick. Le Tiss scored in the last minute and you call him a fecking liar. We were as good as relegated when I flew out, having seen them lose at home to Oldham, Chelsea (a) and Man City in the space of 5 days over Easter.
corky morris Posted 10 December, 2014 Posted 10 December, 2014 I was there too. Shearer really ungracious in an interview afterwards. He hated just how good MLT was.

Manuel Posted 10 December, 2014 Posted 10 December, 2014 Like the way plenty of Blackburn supporters actually sat and clapped Le Tiss second goal.

It was Daglish who was the twaat in the interview afterwards, saying something along the lines of great players don't miss the easy chances, as MLT did late on.

He got his career of to a great start with that hat-trick against Arsenal; but, IIRC, after that, he actually struggled quite a bit to get on the score sheet; and for a period he was eclipsed by MLT, Rod Wallace and Rideout. But there was something about him that kinda marked him out as being something special, and he quickly became one of my favourite Saints’ players. Even when Shearer was still very young, I remember betting my brother-in-law £10 that he would one day play for England; and when he made his debut, I don’t think I could have been more nervous for him even if he’d been my own son! I was so pleased when his England career took off. Then all too soon he was gone from Saints. I still appreciated his performances for England, but I grew to dislike the arrogant (imo) figure he became for Blackburn and Newcastle. Great player, though, and not a bad pundit, imo.

And always very supportive of Southampton in his punditry as well. I always find it strange when I dislike a player, but like them as a non player. Bit like Mark Hughes.

You're right about that. He burst onto the scene and then struggled a little bit after that. When we played 4-3-3 Rideout was usually the chosen one. But ironically it was under branfoot that Shearer came on, had a decent season under him that got him his move to Blackburn. Strange to think that one of of England greatest ever strikers would actually progress under one of our worst ever managers.

Sour Mash Posted 10 December, 2014 Posted 10 December, 2014 Imagine the state of this place if we shipped 7 goals to an average Everton team now. Huge away following by our standards at the time for somewhere like Everton, as we'd beaten Man Utd 6-3 the week before! Every season we'd get well hammered at least once or twice. Doesn't happen as much full stop these days, but used to pretty much take it in our stride back then.
shurlock Posted 10 December, 2014 Posted 10 December, 2014 My overriding memory of this period was not the football but Devon Malcolm (and Goughy) smashing Shane Warne and the Aussies all over the park in the Ashes.
Dark Munster Posted 11 December, 2014 Posted 11 December, 2014 tHERE WAS SO MUCH AGGRO AGAINST BRANFOOT THAT THE SHEARER LOSS WAS JUST PAR FOR THE COURSE Yes indeed. Immediately after Shearer made his debut for England I recall Br*****t doing his best to cash in on him, and saying (I paraphrase) "Now he's an England international I'm sure he'll want to move to a bigger club." C**t. (Br*****t, not Shearer).

Turkish Posted 11 December, 2014 Posted 11 December, 2014 I can remember a hiding at Newcastle. Cole scored a hat-trick. Was that the game where we were 4-0 down after about 20 minutes, we had Richard Dryden playing centre back who was truely awful and looked about 3 stone overweight. Think we lost 5-0 in the end.

Think we lost 5-0 in the end. Was that the match when Duncan Ferguson caused us a lot of grief? I’ve got a feeling Gary Monk was playing as well. I remember sending a very angry letter to Rupert Lowe straight after one heavy defeat at Newcastle, and then I sent him a more sober and measured one a day later. To be fair to O’ Rupes, he answered both of them.

OttawaSaint Posted 11 December, 2014 Posted 11 December, 2014 Damn! Had forgotten how angry that game had made me. We played really well but got utterly shafted by the ref. Shearer is and was ****. I remember being at a game at St James' park and he got Dodd sent off with a dive, scored the penalty and then taunted us by celebrating right in front of us.
torsaint Posted 11 December, 2014 Posted 11 December, 2014 Seem to remember B******t said the problem with Shearer was that he didn't score enough goals. Priceless.

And only 5 years from the Everton game. 1990/1 6-2 away to Derby 1991/2 4-0 home to Leeds, 4-0 home to Arsenal, 5-1 away to Arsenal 1992/3 5-2 away to Sheffield Weds 1993/4 4-0 away to Arsenal 1994/5 5-1 away to Newcastle. Our away record in particular used to be terrible. Amazing looking back how many games we used to lose full-stop.
