Lighthouse Posted 8 December, 2014 Share Posted 8 December, 2014 In the last three games he has been up against several hundred million pounds of talent. Sanchez, Welbeck, RVP, Rooney, Aguero, Navas, Cazorla, Mata, etc. I can't say he has done anything particularly wrong and certainly kept Utd fairly quiet tonight. I don't think we will find a better back up willing to sit on our bench. He reads the game well and looks fairly calm on the ball, in essence a poor man's toby. I don't understand when it was decided he is a bad player, he looked an absolute bargain in our first season and only lost his place when we bought Lovren. For all those spitting, "what's wrong with Gardos FFS!!" well, what's wrong with Yoshi?

Plumstead_Saint Posted 8 December, 2014 Share Posted 8 December, 2014 Did alright tonight. I'd have loved it if he had scored that chance he had. Definitely better than Gardos based on his appearances so far, and a premier league quality player IMO.

andoru Posted 9 December, 2014 Share Posted 9 December, 2014 I've always felt Yoshida is one of those players who very quickly gets out of form when he's not playing, and then takes 3 – 4 games to rediscover it when he is. We've seen it in the past, when after a few games he's developed a strong partnership with Fonte, but when he comes in for the odd match here and there he underperforms. Dellman Posted 9 December, 2014 Share Posted 9 December, 2014 He's faced the best in the Premiership last few weeks and I reckon we're very lucky to have his quality as third choice, we won't get better to occupy the bench but what's gone wrong with Gardos, I thought he was the big signing to be first choice, is he ill or is he a poor trainer or doesn't he understand the language or was he over-rated? david in sweden Posted 9 December, 2014 Share Posted 9 December, 2014 Did OK IMO. He's looks a more confident player than in last season, and TBF being given a (proper) starting position is a bit easier than being thrown into an unfamilar role for a game or two. Fatboy40 Posted 9 December, 2014 Share Posted 9 December, 2014 Maya Yoshida, the 'Cuprinol' of defenders. I'd genuinely like to know though why Gardos is so low down the pecking order. Why, when Toby was fit, was he not being loaned out to get some game time under his belt ? (of course that's assuming anyone would be interested in him). doddisalegend Posted 9 December, 2014 Share Posted 9 December, 2014 Yoshida's main problems come from being in and out of the team rather than getting a run of games. When he plays regularly he is decent enough. Also his bad performances quite often seemed to come when he was paired up with Jos the boss.
Bucks Saint Posted 9 December, 2014 Share Posted 9 December, 2014 He played well last night, but in true SWF fashion, that somehow now means he has been excellent in every game and not made any mistakes this season. In the same way that when he does make the odd mistake, he is then immediately nowhere near PL standard and should be shipped out. The reality is that he is decent enough for 3rd/4th choice assuming his wages are reasonable, but world beater he is not.
sadoldgit Posted 9 December, 2014 Share Posted 9 December, 2014 I am not a Yoshida fan but he wasn't too bad last night. He was caught knapping on the ball in the penalty area and he does tend to lose concentration at times but as a 4th back up CH he is ok. When I see his name on the team sheet though I always worry and I really do not think he is consistently good enough if we are looking for a top 6 place. I am very surprised that he keeps Gardos out of the team and it makes me wonder why we bought him if he is no better than Yoshida.

The reality is that he is decent enough for 3rd/4th choice assuming his wages are reasonable, but world beater he is not. Actually he did make one huge mistake last night, but recovered it well and thus got away with it, so it did not cost us. But like Fonte who made a big mistake but got punished, he was otherwise very comfortable and dominated the Manure forwards. Did Rooney play last night? Apart from his excellent corner that headed straight for the Northam, and a few arguments with the "referee" (I use the term loosely) it was like he wasn't there. Kevin Friend, appropriatley named, friend of Man Utd. While there are referees like that **** no team will ever break into the top four/five in the PL. We are all entitled to our opinions and I don't think that Yoshida is good enough at the level we want to play at. I am not alone but clearly RK thinks he is better than Gardos. Yoshida made a howler last night that he managed to get away with and you can bet you will get one of those at least a match. Our form tends to dip when he plays. Sorry, not a fan. 4th choice for me. He's not CL standard which is where we want to be but wer're not there yet and he is better 'cover' in that position than I've seen for many years. He's not CL standard which is where we want to be but wer're not there yet and he is better 'cover' in that position than I've seen for many years. I think Gardos frightened our coaches by his slackness in the Stoke away league cup game, where he had a bit of a nightmare (and was substituted). I think hes a good player though, but it's obvious that they're going for PL experience with Yoshida in the first instance (god knows how Gardos is going to get experience though!). He's not another Forren though, given that he's actually played games for us.
JackFrost Posted 9 December, 2014 Share Posted 9 December, 2014 There have been numerous occasions where Maya has started alongside Fonte and Maya has been our best CB. I think it all started when we had to rely on our backup defenders, and people immediately started to jump on the bandwagon that any backup CB playing was Jos Hooiveld at his worst. Maya got tarred with the same brush. He has looked rusty when he's been out of the side for a long while and he is immediately hounded out for the smallest thing everytime. Then when he gets a run in the side he often proves he is a very able backup and can be relied upon. A very valuable asset and like I said, on numerous occasions he has outperformed Fonte when they've played in the same game

He's not another Forren though, given that he's actually played games for us. This needs correcting - implies he was like McNair last night. He did not have a "nightmare" and handled the very physical Stoke comfortably until about 65/70 minutes, when he made the first of two poor errors, one of which Fonte rescued us from. He was subbed with about 10-15 to go. Not great but someway different to the lad last night. Prior to that he looked like he did at Arsenal, very solid. Yes the errors were bad, but hey, look at Fonte yesterday or Maya most days. Edited 9 December, 2014 by Bucks Saint

angelman Posted 20 December, 2014 Share Posted 20 December, 2014 Always thought that people under rate him. Sure he tended to make a mistake or two, that turned out to be costly, but good in the air, can be a little over physical, but generally quite reliable. Think Koeman might be the sort of manager to improve him, as we have seen this season.
