benjii Posted 4 December, 2014 Share Posted 4 December, 2014 ---------------------Forster-------------------- --------Fonte-------Gardos-----Yoshida----- Clyne---------------Big Vic-------------Bertrand --------------Davis--------Tadic---------------- -----------------Pelle ----Long/Mane----------- Otherwise, it would be: -------------------Forster-------------------- Clyne-------Fonte---Yosh/Gardos-----Bertrand -------------Wanyama--------Davis---------- ----------------------Reed--------------------- Mane/Long----------Pelle---------------Tadic I think that first set up looks much more solid. Without Cork or Morgan to get stuck in, I like the idea of Big Vic staying deep in front of a back three. Would mean that Davis wouldn't have to curtail his high-energy game too much and might allow us to get Tadic on the ball in more meaningful positions behind the front two. I think Pelle might appreciate having Long or Mane a bit nearer to him and our attack has looked a bit blunt recently so the 3-5-2 has the added advantage of freshening that up a bit. I think it would also make us less reliant on him and a front two or Long / Mane could also be effective if he had to come off. Long up front on his own wouldn't work that well IMO. The worry with 3-5-2 is that you end up with a skilful forward who plays the channels isolating a centre back in a one-on-one dribble more often. If van Persie or Rooney is dribbling towards the corner of the box I think we would rather have Bertrand or Clyne fronting them up than Fonte or Yoshi. Anyway, we know Koeman has apparently been willing to flex things at other teams so I wonder if it's something he is thinking about.
Lallana's Left Peg Posted 4 December, 2014 Share Posted 4 December, 2014 I don't think he will change formation at all. The only change we've seen all season is 4-1-1 with Long in the number 10 role (which I absolutely hate). More change is as big of a risk as playing 'weaker' players. I would rather we stick to the formation we know and think is suitable for the game and slot players in - if it is a good formation then the impact of other players slotting in shouldn't be too negative. And Reed will play deeper than Davis if both play on Sunday.

Lord Duckhunter Posted 4 December, 2014 Share Posted 4 December, 2014 I like 3 at the back as it can mean 2 up top without being out numbered in midfield . I think long and Pelle could form a decent partnership but a 442 would leave us exposed , so 352 could work. However, you need a proper preseason to work on it and also need 2 holding mid fielders . We would still be weak in centre mid without cork, Morgan and Toby and Rooney, Mata and RVP will have a field day if the back 3 are just thrown together without being drilled to playing together in a 3. Saint Rees Posted 4 December, 2014 Share Posted 4 December, 2014 Just bring Gardos in for Toby and have either Reed for Cork or Tadic in the hole like at Villa, but that would be risky. fanimal Posted 4 December, 2014 Share Posted 4 December, 2014 Been musing all day about how we deal with all our 'spine' (Toby/Morgan/Tadic?) out potentially; Others have alluded to it, how about Targett at LB and Ryan at left midfield, round pegs in round holes and all that?? certainly would be pacy! Cant see many other possibilities for flexibility.

Hopkins Posted 4 December, 2014 Share Posted 4 December, 2014 There is a possibility that their full backs/wing backs on Monday will be Young and Valencia. We should be attacking them at every opportunity with wingers and attacking full backs.

I have a feeling we'll let in a couple, but we may score a few too ... hopefully.
SaintTex Posted 4 December, 2014 Share Posted 4 December, 2014 ---------------------Forster-------------------- --------Fonte-------Gardos-----Yoshida----- Clyne---------------Big Vic-------------Bertrand --------------Davis--------Tadic---------------- -----------------Pelle ----Long/Mane----------- Maybe it is semantics, but isn't this more of a 5-3-2 ---------------------Forster-------------------- Clyne --------Fonte-------Gardos-----Yoshida-----Betrand --------------Davis--------Big Vic-----------Tadic---------- -----------------Pelle ----Long/Mane----------- we are basically adding an addition CB to our back line (basically replacing Alderweireld with 2 players). Clyne and Bertrand are going to do their usual thing. Maybe it gives them some additional freedom to go forward. It's an intriguing formation. USA SaintsFan Posted 5 December, 2014 Share Posted 5 December, 2014 surprised so many people saying Gardos over Maya - seems Koeman preferes Yosh? Or am i missing something? Before we bought Toby, wasn't gardos supposed to be replacement for lovren with yoshi as backup? I thought gardos looked good in the short appearance in midfield earlier this season. SFC Chris Posted 5 December, 2014 Share Posted 5 December, 2014 Gardos came in with a very good reputation so it's been quite surprising that he's had so little football - though we've seen this before... Not a fan of 3 at the back as it leaves us very exposed down the wings and I'm not sure it's as easy to adapt to a back 3 from a back 4 as you'd think. I'd prefer we stick to the shape that has served us well and the players, collectively, are comfortable playing. Just a shame that all these injuries have occurred when we can least afford them. But how can he be expected to be match sharp if he hasn't played, especially at a new team? Yoshida isn't the worst centre back I've ever seen, but I'd rather see Gardos given the chance to make the position his own if we are short at CB. Then again, I absolutely trust RK's judgement. Then again so did Steve de Ridder and Emmanuel Mayuka, youtube clips and FM stats are not the basis for a good reputation, neither is the Roumanian League for that matter. He may well be a fine player but at this moment in time Yoshida is considered better adapted to our needs.

Matthew Le God Posted 5 December, 2014 Share Posted 5 December, 2014 (edited) 3-5-2 if Morgan, Cork, JWP and Toby are out? I don't see why if central midfielders are injured there is a need to switch from one system that needs 3 central midfielders to another system that also needs 3 central midfielders. How is that a solution to a problem of a reduction in central midfielders available? Edited 5 December, 2014 by Matthew Le God
The9 Posted 5 December, 2014 Share Posted 5 December, 2014 -----------Forster-------------- Clyne Fonte Yoshida Bertrand ------Wanyama Davis-------- Long ----Tadic -----Mane----- ----------Pelle----------------- Assuming none of Cork, Alderweireld or Schneiderlin (who actually told a mate of mine on Wednesday he'd be fit for Monday's match before Koeman said otherwise) are fit. DuncanRG Posted 5 December, 2014 Share Posted 5 December, 2014 Changing system is a lot more challenging than changing personnel, especially when you have less time to train between games and your absentees are defensive.
