Andy Durman Posted 4 December, 2014 Share Posted 4 December, 2014 Having again seen Harrison Reed as an unused sub against Arsenal, Monday night against Man U is surely now his opportunity to shine and maybe give one or two other youth players a chance. Why not? Would do we have to lose?
rooney Posted 4 December, 2014 Share Posted 4 December, 2014 I think we will be forced into this in any case but agree with the sentiments.

S-Clarke Posted 4 December, 2014 Share Posted 4 December, 2014 When is JWP going to be fit again? Probably the Burnley game, or just after. (Going by the 3 weeks Koeman said in the pre-city presser)
Ulrich van Gobbel Posted 4 December, 2014 Share Posted 4 December, 2014 I'm really looking forward to seeing Harri Reed start his first PL league game. He looks a real talent! We chucked both Shaw and Chambers in at the deep end and it worked, I say let's do the same with Reed!
once_bitterne Posted 4 December, 2014 Share Posted 4 December, 2014 Trouble is there really isn't anyone knocking that hard on the door at present I would wager that both Targett and Reed would have played in the PL this season if MP was still here..... VectisSaint Posted 4 December, 2014 Share Posted 4 December, 2014 I would wager that both Targett and Reed would have played in the PL this season if MP was still here..... Targett probably would not have started under MP if Shaw was still here though (unless he was injured). Problem for Targett is that there is someone better in his position. You're probably right about Reed though. Trouble is, this is really the extent of our youth backup now, with Gallagher injured, Turnbull, Stephens and Sinclair out on loan, that only leaves McQueen and Isgrove as potentially involved (other than goalkeepers). I don't know what has happened to Isgrove, has he been injured? Not much sign of anyone else joining the first team squad.

Saints foreva Posted 4 December, 2014 Share Posted 4 December, 2014 Why not play him and find out? Well Koeman hasn't seemed keen to play him so far, he preferred to put by far our best CB in midfield. Doesn't that tell you something?
doddisalegend Posted 4 December, 2014 Share Posted 4 December, 2014 Reed obviously isn't as good as people on this forum think. I think it was Les Reed who compared Harrison to Paul Scholes which suggests the club think he is pretty good I'd say.

Doesn't that tell you something? Pure guess work here, but this could be more about the opposition than Reed. If it had been Burnley at home, Leicester away, rather than City and Arsenal, he may well have come on in both games. I guess we'll see either way if Morgan, Toby, Tadic and Cork are all out of Monday

Presumably it'll be Davis, Big Vic, and someone else. Considering current injuries, Reed is the only other fit midfielder we have. Could move Gardos forward I suppose but I'd rather have players operating in their natural position.
Lighthouse Posted 4 December, 2014 Share Posted 4 December, 2014 Clearly the coaches who have been training him for a large part of his development don't feel Reed is ready yet for big League games. I'm not sure why the clamour for a player who nobody has seen play a proper first team competitive match before. Remember the summer of 2008 when some people were championing our new young team and the benefits of our academy. I would have thought Jamie White and Lloyd James would have put most people off throwing kids in at the deep end.

Surely if he is making the bench he must be considered capable of playing?

doddisalegend Posted 4 December, 2014 Share Posted 4 December, 2014 Which senior player would you say he is keeping off the bench? Why does it have to be a senior player? are you suggesting there is not a single player in our under 21 set up capable of stepping up to the first team? Doesn't say much for our academy. If Reed is just in the team because there is no one else they might as well put a different development squad player on the bench each week for the experience if there is no intention of playing them it doesn't really matter. Apart from JWP, Chambers and Shaw you mean? Reed is on the bench because there are no better players in our squad for that position. Clearly the coaches feel he is one of the brightest prospects in our youth set up, hence he is the one on the bench for first team games.

Lallana's Left Peg Posted 4 December, 2014 Share Posted 4 December, 2014 Reed is ready it's just that there are other better options ahead of him in the pecking order. Injuries to JWP, Cork, Schneiderlin, and Alderweireld mean he should be given an opportunity. If not he may as well join a bigger club and not play because plenty like him, Man Utd in particular. I agree ...I'd like to see him get some real game time, but it's always been best to mould a new youngster into a successful side, now he's going to be seen as some sort of last gasp life-saver. If he doesn't shine....some people on here will quickly dismiss him as a flop.
once_bitterne Posted 4 December, 2014 Share Posted 4 December, 2014 Think you mean Cortese Good point. He's also forcing MP to play Mason and Kane at Spurs. It's amazing the power the bloke holds. I mean he still has numerous journos in his pocket even tho he no longer even works in the game.

Hate to break this to you but two of those players aren't actually saints players anymore and the other one is an established first teamer.
