Goatboy Posted 2 December, 2014 Share Posted 2 December, 2014 I have a 24 hour (noon to noon) stopover in L.A next August with wife and 11 year old daughter in tow. Any ideas on hotels/areas to stay, things to see/do? Not bothered about the beach as we are on our way back from French Polynesia. Don't mind a bit of shopping, nice places to eat etc. Only one night so don't mind a bit of a splurge on the budget. Would rather not get involved in any gang violence or car jackings but open to suggestions. All help appreciated.
CB Saint Posted 2 December, 2014 Share Posted 2 December, 2014 Stayed at the Beverley Hilton which was nice - the concierge recommended a great little Italian restaurant which turned out to be Ronald and Nancy Reagans favourite. There is the famous shopping street which you will not bea able to afford although the girls might like the "pretty woman" connection. you could do the houses of the stars tour in Beverly Hills. The missus made me do this - basically up get to see a load of a listers front gates. This is defo an excursion that you take for the team. On the upside you get to tell your mates that you have seen Cameron Diaz's bush. avoid Hollywood - total sh it hole. shopping and malls everywhere if you really want to splash out on food and you are organised enough to book in advance, Spago's is the place to go - might get to see a couple of celebs there. buctootim Posted 2 December, 2014 Share Posted 2 December, 2014 (edited) Go to Santa Monica (about three miles from LAX). Do some shopping on the pedestrianised 3rd Avenue between Wilshire Boulevard and Broadway https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@34.0142797,-118.4945663,3a,66.4y,319.12h,83.67t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1sA8NjIpWM0prCHAQWiJ596g!2e0?hl=en Take a stroll down the pier (amusements for the 11 yr old) and stay here http://www.hoteloceanasantamonica.com/?gclid=CLnCzJWIqMICFQsUwwodSJwA5w. Sorted! Edited 2 December, 2014 by buctootim

CB Fry Posted 2 December, 2014 Share Posted 2 December, 2014 (edited) I loved the Getty centre, it's just lovely. But too far out and would swallow up your entire day. Basically forget I suggested it. Santa Monica is a much better idea. Edited 2 December, 2014 by CB Fry

Queen Mary is also docked at Long Beach. Catalina's nice but a ways off LA as for the dope who knows?!? Pasadena is a nice town up in the NE part of LA near the JPL - some great restaurants and bars there. If you're at a loose end you could also try the Tricky Dickie museum at Anaheim
Golden Balls Posted 2 December, 2014 Share Posted 2 December, 2014 Can only really suggest stuff that's not suitable for an 11 year old
egbb saint Posted 3 December, 2014 Share Posted 3 December, 2014 Griffith Observatory - best place for views of the Hollywood sign
FloridaMarlin Posted 3 December, 2014 Share Posted 3 December, 2014 Agree with Griffith Observatory. It might sound old hat, but an 11-year-old would love Disneyland. The California one is the original, and although there is not much of the original left the Disneyland Hotel still has some vestiges of the original feel of the place. There's also Universal Studios. Not as big as the Orlando version and still has more of the original movie studio feel about it. Le Brea tar pits is also worth a visit.

Re Universal - if you buy the fast pass and get a shift on you can do 90% of the good stuff in half a day
Gemmel Posted 3 December, 2014 Share Posted 3 December, 2014 Worth seeing who or what is on at the Staples centre - Great bars and restaurants all around that area. Will post a list of restaurants and bars, but there a lots of juice / smoothe bars (For the 11 year old) Couldn't recommend Santa Monica enough - it has everything and a really laid back / pleasant atmosphere Hotel Delpina, is pretty decent and very close to everything.
