The Black Box - the reason Cork has no new contract?

Is the Black Box the reason we are holding off on giving Cork a new contract? As a player he doesn't have the greatest attributes, but the sum of his attributes makes him a decent player. Is this why he has no contract, because we believe it won't be difficult to bring someone in who is better on the same wages as a new contract would place him on (for example, Jordy Clasie)?

Interesting theory, no?

I'm with Jeff! I don't like to think of THE BLACK BOX as a small cinema with youtube clips and an excel spreadsheet, it's much more ethereal than that! There are mysteries in THE BLACK BOX which are beyond human understanding!

I propose a regular Saintsweb series - What Mysteries Lurk In THE BLACK BOX? It can be like Twilight Zone. This week, the severed head of Jack Cork!

Well one of the main things they said they used the analysis in the box for was comparing potential signings against current players.

I am more than happy for people to disagree, just seems strange that no alternative reasons have been given. However, seeing the calibre of the posters who have swarmed to the thread I shouldn't really be surprised.

What you're saying is we may have decided we can buy a better player than Jack Cork. That entirely possible. The fact that the black box is one of the tools we use to make those decisions doesn't make much of a difference

I think that having the black box certainly facilitates that. Perhaps the reason is what I heard in the Summer then.

Although players have not have contracts renewed before all this black box talk.

I like many others find it hard to see why we haven't tied Cork down expect it maybe cos see Reed's or JWP's progress if it doesn't happen.

Clasie isn't a black box thing either. People getting too sucked in by this it seems. It's just analysis - other clubs do it I believe.

I thought we should have a song about the black box but I haven't finished my research. So far:

(To the tune of good goals/big nose)

Black box

We've got a fookin black box

Etc

Or

It stands at only (does anyone know the dimensions?)

(The rest of the song has to rhyme with the dimensions)

Still a bit of work to do.

In answer to the OP - no

Black box, black box

It might suggest jack cork is ****e

Black box, black box

During the summer the deadwood left

And it ensured we weren't bereft

Black box, black box

Final catchy line

'Southamptons box machine'?

Gives stats on the left

Creates player profiles on the right

I said last year of our midfield he is the most likely to be replaced, he is decent, a good allrounder but generally has no one attribute that sets him apart like some of the others.

I dont think you need a black box to work that out.

Oh god, don't use the term "allrounder", Sour Mash didn't like it when I used a cricketing term.....didn't have the heart to tell him where "Hattrick" came from.

While I am very impressed with our set up, let's not project magical properties on the Black Box. It's a research and recruitment tool. Probably a very good one.

I'm just glad they didn't name it "The Magic Player Finding Dragon Room" Too much mystique in a name like that.

Is a black box something you suffer from after a night on the Guinness?

It is a plausible idea but I would be surprised if we could get anyone with his attributes on the cheap.

After last night's game v Villa many are saying it would have been a lot better if Cork had replaced Davis and obviously he is highly regarded by the majority of fans including me. But with Koeman admitting that they are already working on a new deal for Clyne it is evident that a new contract for Cork is just not on the table either now or the future. Big big mistake I reckon. He is a 10m player who will leave for nought.

Or if Davis doesn't play, JWP does (when fit) and in the near future Reed will be pushing for the same spot. I don't blame us for not rushing into this negotiation.

FWIW, I hope he does stay particularly if we do end up with sort of European football next season.

I'm starting to lean towards the suggestions that Cork is victim of an over-crowded squad area (midfield) rather than not being considered up to standard by 'the management' per se. As some people have alluded to, the club's philosophy is to have a clear pathway into the 1st team for academy graduates (JWP and Reed for example) and we've simply got too many decent senior midfielders blocking that pathway at the moment.

No way Trousers, if the youngsters are good enough they force their way through soon enough and usually by the time they are 18. Jack Cork is the Fred Kemp of his day. Loved by the fans but not rated by the management. Tony Funnell was another one.
