TopGun Posted 17 November, 2014 Share Posted 17 November, 2014 Good to see both CBs on loan to Swindon were involved in the defeat of Bristol City at the weekend which ended a long unbeaten run for Bristol City and established Swindon in second place in League 1. Although I feel the problem for the pair is that the longer we sustain a high league place, the less likely they are to be included in RK's longer term plans. Arguably perhaps neither is as good as Calum Chambers, Chambers being slightly younger but partly established himself last year at RB in the Saints side? Any thoughts? Mowgli Posted 17 November, 2014 Share Posted 17 November, 2014 Both are only 20 so there's about 4 or 5 years more work for them to develp as centre backs . It's good that Saints still talk about them as future first team players (Hunter, in particular) and they still consider themselves Saints players on loan. I suspect that the reason they have been loaned out together is to develop that understanding that they have with each others play. They've had good reviews at Swindon and I think generally people accept that they will make mistakes whilst they are learning. They are alot more exposed at the County Ground where, I believe, they operate a back 3. I'm hoping they make the grade rather than certain of it but the signs are good so far. david in sweden Posted 17 November, 2014 Share Posted 17 November, 2014 (edited) Historically, goalies and centre-backs are difficult to bring on at an early age, and take longer to develop. Somewhat reminiscent of when we had Matt Mills and Martin Cranie at the same ages. Were OK ..but ??? Both the lads mentioned (in OP)....did well in the Academy and loans to clubs like Swindon are part of the format for up-and-coming talents. Remember both Jack Cork and Ryan Bertrand both had lengthy loans to several clubs before they eventually came good (for us). If Swindon are clever, they'll extend the loans on one/both especially if they get promotion...although I think that Stephens rates a bit better than Turnbull..or ?... I might expect to see one of them return in May ....and the other stay permanently at Swindon. Precisely who ...will depend on Swindon's transfer budget and Saints' evaluation of them both. S-Clarke Posted 18 November, 2014 Share Posted 18 November, 2014 Swindon love Stephens, he is a shining light at that level. I think he could be an able player for our squad in the future.

Saint Charlie Posted 12 January, 2015 Share Posted 12 January, 2015 Great goal Swindon. They are a decent side, play nice passing football. Been an absolutely brilliant loan spell for both those lads, playing every week in a team that could go top tonight.
