Squad player yes but he wouldn't be happy with that. Our coaching would help him though.

If we lose Rodriguez I'd want a proper goalscorer. Wonder if we'd have a chance of tempting podolski.

I don't think Podolski is our kind of signing.

We need strength off the bench and through the squad - hardest thing for a club our size to convince good players to come here and possibly sit on the bench for a fair bit.

This..........and don't think we would pay mega bucks for a bench warmer..........IMO

He's young and English and with a season or two of Academy Polish could be a world star. Tadic needs competition.

I know there's a sizable population of Eastern Europeans in Southampton these days, but I'm still surprised to see they're teaching Polish at Staplewood. Blame Boruc for that I suppose.

Could be a little less selfish. Think he's got a much wider game than he plays at the mo. He would need an understanding of those around him and confidence in them. Could end up by behaving more precious than AL though.

This is my issue with Redmond too - he seems very keen to cut in and have a go himself rather than look for a teammate.

As a Scotland fan I have to chuck Ikechi Anya's name into the mix as well - although he's 26 he's a very good little player and would fit our system well. Quick enough to play on the shoulder, skilled enough to beat a man one-on-one and can supply a good cross too. Not sure winger is our biggest priority but if we were looking I would say he'd be a good signing at the right price.

Redmond certainly has something about him and he's still only 20.

Seems like one of those targets we've been looking at and working on for a while.

I can remember Jeremy Wilson tweeting that he was our back-up choice if the Mane deal failed to materialise on deadline day.

Worth a punt, I'd say.

Have to agree with that one, I've seen him play quite a few times for Scotland (never for Watford though!) and have been very impressed !

His goal against Germany was exceptional !

Will make a good long-term replacement for Rodriguez...
Doesn't look like he offers goals whatsoever though? At least Rodriguez showed that a bit before stepping up with us. I don't think he's even first choice for Norwich most weeks. Guess we're buying potential, but still would be a strange one to sink £8m into.

Agree. Only ever seems to perform for Eng U21s and was dropped by Norwich recently.

No Championship goals this season.

No goals for Redmond in the Championship this this season. Not his main job, granted, but in our system the front three all need to be a goal threat.

Not convinced.

Shane was'nt a particular goal threat until Leicester...

Plus Corky and Vic have been putting them away this season after some barren times...

If you are coached well enough in the right system and you have the ability, then you will score and no reason to think Redmond would not.

It's easy to forget that 20 is still young age with people like Shaw and Ward-Prowse strutting their stuff with distinction on the Premier League stage. Whatever his personal weaknesses such as an apparent head down selfishness in the final third, much of that c an be eradicated by proper coaching. It is possible to mould people to the shape you want after all given the will on both sides and a bit of one-on-one tuition.

He looked particularly exciting the other evening when the kids won 3-1 in one of the best matches I've seen this season.

Nor do I understand this posters who immediately offer up Jay Rodrigues as a make-weight to create a space for Redmond. They are both hugely promising talents with lightning speed that will terrorise packed defence for years to come. There is nothing wrong either with being noted as an English club developing English players for future Saints and England.

another mystery target. OK, I know he's only 20..and Norwich are (reputedly) asking £8 million for him, but he hasn't impressed me in (the few) games I've seen him in.

7 goals in 62 games for Birmingham, but that was Championship, and the " rather flukey " long-distance shot that beat Saints 1-0 at Carrow Road last season is still the only Prem. goal he's scored.

If were going to invest that sort of fee in him, I hope that the " Black Box" has more evidence to his advantage that I've seen. Good prospect ? maybe, but can't see him rivalling Mané for a team place.

Right - the most important thing in buying players is consistancy of form - for someone who can't tie down a place in a mid-table Championship side, I can't really see where that price tag comes from.

I just dont understand how anyone can slag off Redmond and decide that Redmond is worth 8m frankly

looking back ......Sour Mash has written something similar on #17 on this thread.

it's not my estimate but one that's been quoted in several articles about Saints' supposed " interest " in him---if indeed there is any. Another "source" suggested they'd refused £5 mill. and wanted 10m.

maybe some people are misjudging him, but that sort of fee sounds vastly inflated for an uncapped Championship level player - when you consider the fees we've paid out recently.

They seem to think that they can just buy their way out of trouble, having already spent £120m over the summer.

Rather than buy players from us they are now planning to sign our targets before we have the chance. The perfect transfer strategy.

Guess it's either £8m now, or £20m after a year with us.

A team that nearly won the league last season should not be buying a player from the championship to save their season

True - but then this season Sterling seemed to have been the saviour before either Brendan and/or Woy screwed him up a bit. I do like the way that we bring through our own players, and supplement them with other English that we have bought in and improved. I suppose that last season was better in that respect than this season, but guess selling 4 English players is always going to have an impact.

Strange if true, makes you wonder what Liverpool are upto, they keep paying over inflated prices. Did they not learn from last time? That Ian Ayre must have a very, very nice holiday home.

I think most at Liverpool might wonder what they are up to as well. Having derided Spurs for spunking away the Bale money, they of course have done the same. We have taken a more measured approach, one that Arsenal might have done, and not gone out and spent every single penny and more as soon as it hits the bank account.
