Nathaniel Clyne England

9-3

Recommended Posts

Got caught napping in possession once in the 2nd half but apart from that did well. Hope he gets the chance to keep hold of the shirt for a good run.

Hardly a surprise as when Sterling was switched over to more on to the right 2nd half he offered absolutely zero cover for Nathaniel, there was nearly always a third of the pitch between them so adding risk to bombing on.

The biggest problem for Nat was that that useless idiot Cahill constantly ignored him when he was in open space and instead passed the ball back squre to either Jagielka or Henderson. These cliquey b.astards really don't like having new young kids around do they.

have to agree, was very noticeable how cahill ignored him

another saint who is now a lion, well deserved.

lets hope he doesn't become another scouser

Looked competent against Slovenia, take Saints bias aside and there was nothing, IMO, to suggest he's more capable then Johnson who is superior to him going forward.

Johnson just looks lost half the time when he is asked to defend. Clyne is a far better player all round.

I was thinking exactly the same. Also Sterling never looked to link up with him either.

I'm not one that buys into the whole "*insert saints players name* is the answer what is the question" but that right back slot is his for the taking. Head and shoulders above the others.

I thought Lallana was a shoe in for automatic first XI for England, especially when he played for Saints. I've thought differently since, but I thought he did well against Slovenia second half. Stay fit and he may become the player Liverpool, and England fans, want to see.

Couldn't agree more. I was wondering whether Cahill's passing technique, prevents him passing quickly right. Cahill doesn't seem to be able to pass with his left foot.

Fonte's silky passing makes Cahill look very ordinary.

Cannot understand why the bench did not see Cahilll constantly trying to pass the ball forward amidst a melee of players, when Nathanial was completely on his own out on the wing.

Totally agree. Nathaniel was great last night..and could have been even better if that donkey Cahill could get some vision on his passing!

I thought the same. Nathan was in space so many times and yet the ball was hoofed right footed to the opposite side of the field where Gibbs was closely marked. Nathan certainly deserved his 7/10 grading after that display.

PS. How did Wilshire get an 8?

Interesting that the BBC gave Nathaniel a decent thumbs up in their after match ratings while in the Sun today they were, I thought, quite critical of him in their write up (no quality going forward, not really tested defensively and looked nervous apparently). Guess opinions are like arseholes etc etc

Having said that according to my arsehole he had a decent game but like others I thought he was overlooked by his team mates a lot when he was in good positions to receive the ball.

From what I saw he did well.

England are set up so badly there's little chance for anyone to actually look good. They play such dire, classless, predictable football I can barely stomach watching a whole game. Jordan Henderson is utter toilet, his best contribution to the game was scoring the own goal which gave us some urgency. God help us if he's going to win 70 odd caps in the centre of our midfield.

Do I remember correctly or did that idiot nonentity award Wilshere Man of the Match the previous game too? Frankly, it was a travesty, as he had quite an average game both times and one therefore supposes that there is some reason like nepotism or man love between them somewhere. Otherwise the conclusion must be that the man is a total moron, which thinking about the way that he rabbits on aimlessly is probably closer to the truth, even though Clyne did get a mention from him along with Welbeck for having a decent game.

But as several have already mentioned, Clyne received very little support from his team mates in defence, even though he made the runs to enable him to get into acres of space out wide on the right and during the second half he received little cover from Stirling up front. Hodges is supposedly intelligent enough and with sufficient experience during his career to know how to employ a player to their best advantage. He has seen Clyne play often enough now to know that he is most effective giving the team additional width to stretch the opponents midfield and also that he possesses great pace. It must have been so frustrating for Clyne to make the movement to create the space and to see the ball played to the other wing, or more often played down the middle, into the traffic.

One hopes that during the post-match analysis, at least Gary Neville will have the ability to see what many of us have, that Clyne is wasted unless one plays to his strengths and is used as an effective attacking option as well as a sound defender. The defence need a bloody good kick up the backside, as does Stirling for not tracking back and leaving our defence exposed.

I suspect that the current Southampton team would be eminently capable of beating that England team. God knows how they will fare when they meet some stiffer opposition.

One might almost suspect... that he still harbours a grudge against Saints....(as Chris Nicholl let him go during his managership). He shouldn't complain he got a much better career AFTER he left SFC.

IMHO Wilshere is a waste of space in midfield, and couldn't be more egotistical .......unless he played for Spuds.

No he didn't. Townsend wanted away and couldn't get to Norwich quick enough. Stop trying to re-write history,

Sounds familiar... Lallana when he got his first call up, anyone? Doesn't seem to be an issue now he plays for the 'Pool.

definitely did seem odd. Am sure this would be picked up by Hodgson as one of Clynes strengths is charging up the right wing and getting dangerous ball in. By contantly not passing to him they were definitely not helping Englands cause.

From the BBC

Southampton's Nathaniel Clyne was highly impressive again, both in defence and attack. There is an opening for a right-back in England's team and he has walked through it. He has shown enough to warrant a good run in the team.

And I hope he will not run elsewhere

Wonderful, wonderful performance from Nat. Doesn't surprise me as he does it for us week in week out.

Will he stay, will he go? Who knows but right now he plays for Saints and we should enjoy what he does for as long as he does it for us.

...which I hope will be for many years to come. Out with the chequebook Les and now get Bertrand into the England squad

Hodgson miust have had a word in Cahill's ear after watching the video of the previous game, as he did pass to Nathanial last night.

A lot of it is becoming used to the players you play with, hence why england teams tend to play consistant lineups and you tend to always get players in groups from teams.

Likelyhood is now you may well see a few more saints consistantly be called up as Hodgson will be able to call up in groups

Once England learn to use the width of the pitch and play to the strengths of Clyne and Shaw, then we will have a team that can compete with the best in the world.

I believe our centre backs are England's biggest problem. Cahill can learn an awful lot from Fonte. Its called Football Intelligents. I question his. Great in defence, but our biggest weakness offensively.

Has to be better playing Clyne at rightback than playing Stones out of position.

On the basis that you need 2 players fighting for each position to be successful, I would say it should be a fight between Clyne and Chambers with Nat well ahead at the moment. Let Stones fight it out with Cahill and Jags for a center back spot.

I was quoting from memory when I wrote the above, but some other people seem to agree with me and the long section on Andy Townsend in the recent ALL THE SAINTS publication includes this :

" Nicholl (who had inherited him (AT) from Lawrie McMenemy)... had never hit it off with Andy......". " Nicholl sold him, and the move suited both parties ".

Nicholl needed the money, and AT was keen to leave ..., though not necessarily to Norwich". If you want to dispute that suggest you take it up with David Bull, Gary or Duncan...they wrote it.

AT must surely have seen his move as beneficial. In three years with Saints he started 89 games +12 subs. and scored a mere 5 goals.

He was certainly good at Norwich . and won the first of his 70 Irish caps only 6 months afterwards. He then moved on to Chelsea, and later Aston Villa.

I've had the dubious privelege of hearing his commentaries (many times ) on televised games, and though he only occasionally mentions his own career, I've never heard him comment on his time at Saints.

However, the gist of my comment on #26 relates to his " adoration of Jack Wilshere" - an opinion I do not share.

Shocking really. Let's not pretend Clyne lives in a bubble. He sees a donkey like Johnson pulling 110K per week off those cash-chucking scousers? It'll be in his mind. However, I don't think he'll be making any move this season, certainly not with results going the way they are up there. Big name manager flies in? Maybe. Rodgers is on borrowed time. I've seen a couple of comments on the Liverpool website refer to him as Rodgson, perhaps indicative of a slow metamorphosis into an owl-like creature. Perhaps the implied wisdom will give him the insight to fly Liverpool out of the shít they're in.
