Ryan Bertrand

Will he ever play for England again? He sounds gutted he didn't get the call up and is unfortunately behind the free scoring Baines and flavour of the month Shaw in a position that England (shockingly) are quite strong in.

And Gibbs has been called up as well.

3 LB's picked, and he's still not there. Kind of rubs it in, harsh.

I think we've seen that Roy and his team will only pick players based on a sustained run of form and that once you're in the team, you're hard to drop, regardless of form.

I imagine Ryan will be in the England squad some time in early 2015 though - although if Shaw and Baines carry on playing well it'll be hard, it's a position we're blessed in. Personally I'd keep Shaw in the U21s - in fact I would all our younger players, doesn't hurt other countries does it?

I think Bertrand can have no real complaints about playing second fiddle to Shaw at England level but he deserves to be part of the squad.

The philosophy of being hard to drop once you are in is a bit extreme but in reality I think he looking for an element of consistency so they underastnad one another more. If you pick players purely on form then you end up with a very different team every time and they wil llook like a team that has not played together very long. poor results will follow.

Personally, I think the ide of picking units from teams is not a bad compromise. A defence that plays together week in week out will have significant advantages but how often do you see units of all England players at club level?

I disagree, 11 games in and Shaw has had one good game (last weekend) whereas Ryan has had 11. Shaw has not been brilliant this season, there have been flashes sure but Baines is first choice anyway and as an understudy I would argue for Ryan.

I don't necessarily think that's a bad way of running a national team. Club teams are more prone to good and bad runs of form because they play more games, and it's that prolonged form that generally gets you recognised and picked for the national team. If you then continue to perform (or, at least, don't do anything to deserve being dropped) then you keep your place. That's why Chambers played ahead of Clyne last month and I expect the same to happen on Saturday.

Baines is Hodgson's first choice at the moment, hasn't played particularly badly for England (and his club form has improved dramatically in the last 6 weeks), and Shaw was second choice in the summer. It's then a toss-up between Gibbs and Bertrand, and I guess you could make the case that Gibbs has been playing better over a longer period of time, as he was decent last season as well whereas Bertrand was pretty average on loan at Villa. All he has to do is maintain his current performance level and make himself impossible to ignore, although he's unfortunate that left-back is one of the few positions where we do have genuine strength in depth.

I think Bertrand has been outstanding for us, my player of the season so far. But he can't expect the squad to change based on 10 game, if others have being doing it for a year or two at the top level.

If he'd had ten good games for a "big club" or even five good games for a big club, he'd be in there.
