How many points do we need for the top 4?

At this stage last season, Spurs were in 6th with 40 points, so I'd guess this season's requirement for fourth will be around 5 points less. Arsenal had 79, but they were top in January, so the tables shaping up differently. I think around 72 might be enough. That would still require us to maintain our good form, but theres plenty of winnable games. The home fixtures against Spurs and Liverpool will be crucial

 Read that and just let it sink in. I'm here laughing my head off at where we are right now. I was sat in St Marys when we lost 2-0 to Rochdale, when fans were fighting amongst themselves after losing to Doncaster, when we had a mere 13,000 people in the stadium for a game V Charlton.

I assume you mean the JPT match in November 2009 (13,906), as we haven't had under 20,000 for a League match against them since The Dell.

And if JPT attendances are your thing, Torquay in the same season was a far lower crowd, 9319. We didn't get under 16,400 for a League match in 2009/10.

Here's how the table looked after 21 games last season........

So after Man Utd's awful season last year, during which time Moyes destroyed them according to fans and the media, they are this year not a single point better off at the same stage. With players such as Falcao, Di Maria, Herrera, Blind, Shaw and all, LVG doesn't really have any excuses. Good for us though, but he's no better than the pushed out Moyes as it stands - and he's had far more resources to play with.

It's his persistence in playing the 3-5-2 formation, and the fact most of the centre backs they have are all hopeless. If you took De Gea and the front 4 with our defence and Vic and Schneiderlin that would be a hell of a team. I guess Van Gaal isn't getting slated as much as he has more of a proven track record than Moyes. A lot of there problems have really been caused by Fergie.

That is true, his future centre back purchases were awful. Smalling, shocking player. Jones, an injury prone mess of a player. I'm sure they were in line to replace Rio - Vidic partnership down the line, but he didn't leave his successors much to play with.

They need to ditch that 3 at the back ******** for a start, get 2 top class CB's (In the Pique, Hummells mould) and stop farting around with Valencia and Shaw as wing backs.

That's another fergie cock up actually. He choose to go with Evans rather than Pique at the time, and sold him back to Barca for a cut price fee....brilliant

I think we can probably pick up 33 more points between now and the end of the season, which is smack bang on 72 as the poster a few posts above mentioned could be the 4th place figure.

That's with draws at the likes of Sunderland and Newcastle away, as well as home games against Liverpool and Spurs. I genuinely think that getting a result at Loftus Road could actually be a pretty key result.

Time will tell, but 33 points from the remaining fixtures isn't beyond us whatsoever.

http://www.sportsclubstats.com/England/Southampton.html

Some statistic based analysis, according to them 76 points or better gives a 100% chance of top 4. 73 - 75 points gives over 99% (99.2% with 73, 99.7% - 74, 99.9% - 75)

I've never trusted that site. They seem to treat all individual match results as equally likely (I think they start the season giving every team a 5% chance of becoming champions).

What we really want is for City to have nothing to play for on the last match of the season (1st or 2nd place being a certainty), plus them to be in the Champions League final (I assume that's a few days later), plus us to be level with Man Utd heading into that game.

They'd roll over, surely?

17 games left.

Last season performances over last 17 games were..

Champion contenders..

Liverpool amazing run 42 points

Man C 39

Chelsea 36

Everton / arsenal 31

Spurs 29

Maybe top 4 contenders would be looking at another 31 this season? (1.82 per game). That would mean any top four contenders increasing their ppg except us, Chelsea and Man C :)

Last season, as we faded with relatively poor squad, arsenal only gained 5 points on us, with no real change in goal difference. So even if we see the season out as last season, (27 points more) we may have fair chance.
