TopGun Posted 5 November, 2014 Share Posted 5 November, 2014 (edited) I was rather hoping that Chelsea, Man City and Arsenal would progress through the group stages of the Champions League which would tie them all up for the second half of the season. But it's looking more likely that Man City and Arsenal won't make it and will have their greater player resources to apply to the Premiership fairly soon. Boo! Edit: Just checked the tables and Arsenal look good to go forward so maybe not as bad as I thought! Edited 5 November, 2014 by TopGun Perhaps a bit arrogant to omit Liverpool also. Ultimatt Posted 5 November, 2014 Share Posted 5 November, 2014 Arsenal are as good as through imo. City still a chance if Bayern field a reserve side but that's unlikely.

TopGun Posted 5 November, 2014 Author Share Posted 5 November, 2014 If Man City come 3rd they'll go into the Europa League in the New Year. Good point MLG. But they'd probably play their development players and expensive cast offs in the Europa League.
CanadaSaint Posted 5 November, 2014 Share Posted 5 November, 2014 I'm less concerned about Man City. They look like a disjointed rabble of expensive, ill-disciplined superstars who don't seem able to handle a well-organized, hardworking team of (supposedly) inferior talent - one in which the midfielders work their butts off to deny space, and then exploit space with lots of "pass and move". Sound familiar? In all honesty Arsenal aren't a heck of a lot better - up and down like a yoyo. I can't help but think that, despite all the odds, a place in the Premier League Top 5 may be more attainable than it has been for years. Whether we can last the course with a relatively shallow squad remains to be seen, but the chance is certainly there.
AussieDog Posted 6 November, 2014 Share Posted 6 November, 2014 If Man City (or Liverpool or Arsenal) do finish 3rd and get dumped into the Europa Cup they would be foolish to not take it seriously as I think this year's winners get entry into next seasons Champions League. I know it's early days but everyone seems to believe that Chelsea have the League sewn up, which leave the others fighting for the remaining CL spots. Can anybody confirm what the scenario is if a) an English team wins the CL and/or b) an English team wins the EL? Would we still only have 4 slots next season - meaning only 2 from the league qualify -or would we get extra spots and in effect, possibly have up to 6 teams? I know that's a bit unlikely but it would be good to know the permutations.

Unless the rules changed then it's still maximum 4 teams.

Obviously the rules HAVE changed though, as the Europa Cup Winners never used to get a place in the Champions League - plus I think they changed the rules after Chelsea won it? Please - no speculation. If you know the answer then post it, but if you're guessing well there's not a lot of point really is there?
Redslo Posted 6 November, 2014 Share Posted 6 November, 2014 Good point MLG. But they'd probably play their development players and expensive cast offs in the Europa League. I wouldn't be too sure. They need to improve their European coefficient so they get a better draw next year. They can't afford to blow off any games after this very poor group phase. Here is a link to an article that purports to explain it. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/competitions/champions-league/10076205/England-could-be-awarded-five-spots-in-the-Champions-League-from-2015.html Basically, if an English team wins the Europa League or the Champions League while finishing out of the top four, England gets five qualifiers. However, if an English team wins both the Champions League and Europa cup and both of those teams finish outside the top four, then England still only gets five entrants and the fourth place team does not qualify. whelk Posted 6 November, 2014 Share Posted 6 November, 2014 (edited) I naturally want Spurs and Everton to lose but can now wish it even harder. Having said that moot point as all English sides look so poor in CL that v unlikely to win it anyway. Edited 6 November, 2014 by whelk

Redslo Posted 6 November, 2014 Share Posted 6 November, 2014 Knowing our luck we will finish 4th and this will happen I don't think our luck is that bad. If anything, we might finish 5th but Man City gets thrown out of the Champions League for Financial Fair Play violations and we get in.
John Boy Saint Posted 6 November, 2014 Share Posted 6 November, 2014 Surely we want them all in the Europa league as that Thursday game seems to mess with the head of most teams in that competition when the league weekend games come up.
lifeintheslowlane Posted 6 November, 2014 Share Posted 6 November, 2014 Is it just me but are others also reveling in just how spectacularly bad Man City were last night? Could easily have ended the game with just 8 players on the field.

Edit: Just checked the tables and Arsenal look good to go forward so maybe not as bad as I thought! it isn't just those top four teams who are struggling to establish themselves in Europe. English Premier League football is at low-point - when we look down at the " great names " below us. Bolstering a club's squad with £100-150 million clearly isn't the answer. The appeal of playing in the Prem. (for foreign players) is £100K /week salary, and much less the honour of playing for the club. I was (as many others) very impressed by the video of the new Staplewood, and that the trainees can see the names of former scholars who've made it to the first team and a later career in the game. Looking at the four Prem. sides mentioned above, it would be difficult to find half-a team from the lot, that has come through their own Academies. Arsenal " little group " came through ours . I've been disappointed by English clubs Euro performances for seasons past - yet not surprised, it needs a major re-think for the " big four " after recent results....but for them - it will also be an expensive one. Could easily have ended the game with just 8 players on the field. Our so called tough games against the big boys can't come quick enough for mind. To an extent City bottling it last night means they can't now play a weekened team against Bayern midweek before our clash. As I said my Citeh mate last night, Liverpool, Citeh and Arsenal are giving the quality of the PL a bad rep playing in Europe. Time for a changing of the guards I think.
