I must admit I was worried about Fonte this season and was hoping he would be replaced and would just be cover, but he has stepped up and is a deserved captain.

I agree with him. I was hoping we'd keep Lovren and bring someone like Toby in to partner him, with Fonte as back up. Fonte has improved year on year (maybe excluding the Championship season)

That's always been the way with Fonte, perhaps due to some residual scepticism that he's been with us since L1 days. But he was one of our players of the season last season -something that the stats more than amply back up. Lovren wouldn't have been able to get away with half of the stuff he did - great for YouTube compilations mind you- without Fonte's positioning and reading of the game.

Last season every said that Lovren made Fonte step up his game. Well, seeing as Lovren joined us from Lyon with a reputation as being an ill disciplined liability in Ligue 1 and now he is struggling at Liverpool (my heart bleeds for him) - maybe it was our José that made Lovren look world class last season!

Agree with Strawlock, (PMSL) Fonte has been pretty good and has been one of our best players for the last season and a half. Maybe Liverpool signed the wrong centre back....
