Yes, but when you're taking £200 per day from my daily rate, that £300 pcm doesn't even start to help...

It's not that large. They'll pay you more than £1 a day.

Christ, even minimum wage demands that.

It's an opinion, so not wrong, but you may disagree with my opinion. I have a lot of family up North, so it's not as if I have never been there, but there have only been two places that I think I would consider moving to - Ilkley and Harrogate.

Wrong side o' t'hills.

I think London is pretty much the best city on earth.

Best place in the UK; but not earth. Think its lost some of its sheen in recent and becoming more and bland. Surely there's a limit to how many estate agents, hair dressers, Eat's and Itsu's you can have.

Everywhere is getting more homogenised and samey though. New York delis are disappearing and being replaced by Pret a Manger on every corner.

Ignoring the point though.

Surprised?

The missus and I still split our time between working from home and our offices in London. The drop in pay to take a more local job, even in big Northern cities, is just :uhoh:

Talking about affordability, I moved to Edinburgh in November and looking at property prices here it's unbelievable what you get for your money. Just goes to show it is all about location. Seen houses change hands where I grew up in North Hampshire for around £350k that probably wouldn't fetch more than £180k here.

True its a general trend, though I think the cult of the highstreet, possibly a legacy of centralisation, seems more pronounced here than in other cities. A property boom --again more pronounced in London than other major cities, has also introduced its own distortions.

No, he's right. I have no idea why the north of England was ever inhabited (says someone for whom moving to London was a big step north).

To create a buffer zone to protect the decent hard working folks in the South from the incursions of the rabid Scots ;)

Agree to a degree with this and your post above. Though I have a feeling (may be wrong/wishful thinking) that this trend may shift a little again in recent years. I'm not for one minute suggesting we are going to see a string of high street shops collapsing but there is a trend for smaller more individual places cropping up and being successful.

I think this is coupled with internet shopping. If you can get everything you can get online, why bother with the high street? Especially in London, where High Streets are often either rammed, or the usual High Street chains are taking up lots of retail space in mega-malls, like the two Westfields at either end of town. I think this leaves a bit of space for independent stores that offer truly unique things a niche to make their own, same for cafes, bars and restaraunts.

Obviously, there are still some pretty huge hurdles to leap. Space is at a huge premium. But I really hope there can be a slight (at least) rebalancing of this.

As relatively new resident of East London, have to confess I really love a lot of the smaller, quirky stuff you get out this way.

Not judging from when I've been to Lancashire...Alderley Edge and Altrincham area is pretty nice, but then thats Cheshire is it?

Altrincham is v nice, as I just said the gf is from there. Though, it does kind of feel like it is a suburb that could be anywhere in the country. Whether or not that is a bad thing, is personal opinion I guess.

It's also a tad odd in that it must one of the very few places in the north with a "Working Man's Conservative Club" right in the middle of town.

Why reply to a post you havn't read? It's literally right there in the first sentence.

Or can points such as "move there then" (what is with this as a response to any criticism?) just not be contained the extra 5 seconds it takes to read what you are replying to?

I admit, I do not try too hard when posting on here. A football forum, nope.

Don't try and dismiss it just because you're not very good at it. You wanted us to value your opinion when you were talking politics, right?

I read Batman's reply to my post and just assumed he'd left his random post generator on. Half expected him to post about how Pelle offers us no mobility up front either.

I forgive you Jamie, those burgers can't flip themselves. You must be a very busy man and can't be expected to read 6 words of my post to establish that I have moved there already.

again, you make out that being a chef (which I am far from) is a point to knock someone with?

I could never do the job that those guys do at sea and it is fuking insane work, on top of insane work. I tip my cap to them.

there are many roles in the forces that could be a point of ridicule. Being a chef is far from one of them

Being in the Fleet Air Arm....that is a different matter!!

It is funny though, when something blows up in your face. Revert to, "I was joking" or "I don't even care anyway".

Not in anyway similar to the style of a 10 year old on the school playground.

yep

A bit like being in the Navy and never being able to do a job at sea?

FFS, Jamie. Put the keyboard down unless you are genuinely digging to Australia.

not sure many of these people exist anymore!

I do not think there is a single trade left where that applies

if there are, they are very specialised and very small

Blimey, didn't realise it was "let's all shout at Jamie hour". Jeez guys...

Nah, it's the semi-regular reminder that Jamie doesn't bother reading anything anyone says.

Not that it was remotely due a refresh.

Because some people exhibited the good sense to recognise where God had created His masterpieces.

Despite being a proud mush I love living up north. Stunning countryside on the doorstep for cycling, good people, great cities such as Manchester up the road, decent infrastructure and for the average bloke a good standard of living can be had leaving plenty of coin in the pocket.

The only downside of where I currently live is being away from the sea.
