Saints plan £10m bid for Harry Kane

funny isn't it how each time there's something in the press about Spurs wanting one of our players there's also one about us wanting one of theirs, anyone would think Levy is testing the water in the media to see if he can get some money off a deal...

Because it's too much or too little? I think he's a good goalscorer, improving all the time, and £10 million in today's market is a decent price. He's tall too.

As long as we don't play him in goal...

I think he's a fantastic prospect. Definitely a starter for England in a few years. £10million would be a steal.

I only want him to join if he does a Lallana:D.

Interviewer "So Harry what was it about saints that made you join them"

Harry " Well they're a huge club last season when I came on a in the 80th minute against them at St. Mary's, when spurs where seven goals down, I just wished I could play in a team as good as theirs one day. When their fans started singing Oh when the Saints it made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck it's so much better than Oh when the Spurs. Once I had spoken to Ronald Koeman I knew I had finally found a manager who wouldn't get sacked after six months. Really between a little club like spurs and Southampton there was just no contest."

It would be nice to think that Les Reed stated this rumour just as a tit-for-tat with the Yobos, 'we can poach your players anytime we like as well'.

More likely Kane's agent putting pressure on Pochettino, pick me or I'm off.

Problem for Rodrigues is where does he fit in as first pick now that things at SMS have moved on so much.... and still we cannot know if he will recover fully and ever be as sharp as he was before. Obviously other clubs don't know that either so any real interest or bids will be next summer if Jat has starred playing again, playing well and can break into the first team as first choice No ??. Long way to go on this one and if the treacherous Argie really does depend on a seriously injured striker recuperating slowly at a different club then the likelihood is he will b long gone before Jay is even considered a prospect again.

Where does he fit in? Interesting and yes we have moved on. But squad depth is something we need, and up front, what would happen if Pelle went down? Long would presumably step up and move into the centre with Mayuka on the bench. Presumably Gallagher will come back at some stage. But we are possibly a little weak if Pelle gets crook and having JRod back would be good.

http://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/oct/28/football-transfer-rumours

The Sun reports that Southampton manager Ronald Koeman is lining up a £10m bid for Tottenham striker Harry Kane, with the Dutch manager having apparently surveyed his current options up front and decided that what he really needs is somebody who isn’t quite as good as them.

 I still think that he is a good prospect though but there are definitely mind games going on! Anthing you can do we can do ....

Looks to me as if our Boardroom are learning lessons. Jay Rod story to Spuds for £15m countered by a similar threat to take away Spurs' potential star striker of the future.

But what's more, I firmly believe we need a young replacement for Mayuka.

Even if swap deals took place we'd be £5m up and have offloaded a great striker in his mid 20s and potential of a reoccurring injury and replaced him with an in form youngster with potential. But I sense, if we took Harry Kane in Jan it will be to offload Mayuka. We can afford Kane and keep Jay Rod. We are in a strong position.

Clever bit of media fencing with Spurs? Our Boardroom look like they may be taking control and are not prepared to be dictated to, we are not afraid of Spurs and Pottychino. It looks like the Boardroom are learning and are emerging as more confident and so they should... We are odds on for Champions League football next season, not Spurs. :)

Given we can't be sure J Rod will ever be the same player - look at Faurlin's repeat injuries at QPR - and J Rod's was a really bad ACL, I'd take Kane + £7-10m. That would also pay for some of Bertrand’s fee to go permanent plus a signing on fee for Cork’s new contract (please Saints).

However, I still think Danny Ings is a target for January or the summer with his contact running down. Hasn't hit the heights so far but seemed sharper on Sunday after injury and got on target. Suits our system and a Southampton lad. Not sure if we'd sign both given we've got Pelle, Long, Mane and Mayuka (who will be loaned out again IMO despite a useful cameo v Sunderland). What about Sam Gallagher?

We do need to look for a long-term replacement for Pelle sooner rather than later (mental to say given that he signed about 3 months ago!). Don't think we'll be looking at that until next summer at the earliest though.

Paper bollicks to try and stir up some rumours in a quiet period.

Not sure Pelle will be in big demand this summer. No English premium. He will be 30 and would cost a lot for that age and would have to be given a big bump in salary. Plus, he will want to play for Italy in the European Championship and sitting on the bench at a bigger club will likely eliminate that opportunity.

Im pretty sure he is talking about replacement due to his age, not due to him being poached

Can't expect the players to be loyal to the fans if the fans aren't loyal to them...

I don't think it works like that though. I doubt if many players stay with a club because they feel loved by the fans. Jay has yet to sign the new contract and looks to be keeping his options open. Can't blame him for that but when he comes to make a decision about his future wages and career progression will be far about Saints fans.

Well it certainly worked well this summer all those who left where given loads of loyalty from saints fans yet couldn't wait to leave. Weirdly over the last few years those who least loved by saints fans , Like Tommy fourpast, seemed the happiest to stay:frown:

Mayuka never plays so what would be the point? We only need one if we need any at all.

Pelle won't play every game hypo. I know Jay rod is improving, but I can't see him being back to his best before February at best. Also, nothing wrong with competition. I like Austin as an option as he's a near perfect stand in for Pelle; big, strong and is a handful for defenders. Like for like if Pelle is injured. Means Koeman doesn't have to change his systems too much.

Mayuka doesn't play for a reason. He's simply not proven himself in this League and it would be a fair assumption that he is not better than Pelle in training or he'd start.

But, I see your point, why buy two? For me our lack of strikers is our weakness. I do not see Long as a striker, he's a winger now. So, we could do with a small Kevin Phillipsesque option (Mayuka isn't good enough for this role so he should be replaced and moved on). Is that option Kane? I don't know. Austin gives us a second target man up front, a double handful with Pelle in a 4-4-2 or an instant replacement for Pelle if injured.

Jay Rod is interesting. It is difficult to see how he fits into Koemans formation with Pelle playing, apart from perhaps filling the wing role he was doing for England. Is he an out and out target man like Lambert was or Pelle is? I'm not sure. What I am sure of is he adds a lot, and Koeman will work out how best to use him.

So what? For me, sell Mayuka and replace him with a young Kevin Phillips. Is that Kane? Not sure.

Keep Jay Rod. He's competition for Mane and Long.

Go for someone like Austin to compete with Pelle.

So sell one, buy two. We have the money in January to do it.
