Bertrand wants to stay

Sounds more to me like he'll wait and see if we get into Europe.

Then goes on to talk about the good base to the club etc.

IMO, that's not it. The option to buy at a fixed price is in place as part of the loan deal and although Bertrand could refuse an offer there is no advantage to Southampton in exercising the option early. If they did it would be Southampton who would then carry any risks such as loss of form or injury. If Ryan is still performing in May as well as he is now I'd expect the club to sign him based on Koeman's current comments, but things can change, for example if RB picked up an injury or suspension giving Targett a run in the side and if Target performed beyond expectations. As Bertrand said: You've got wait and see, but he's talking about an offer from the club, not whether he could go off and tout himself elsewhere, when he's actually got stability here after years of uncertainty.

Ryan Bertrand staat open voor een permanent verblijf bij het Southampton van Ronald Koeman: "Fantastische manager" http://www.fcupdate.nl/voetbalnieuws/265041/

And also RE Toby - I think Alex Crook said last week that we've opened up discussions to sign him on a permanent basis in January already.

I can see Toby being much harder to secure permanently. His prospects at Atletico are much brighter than Bertrand's are at Chelsea. Wouldn't begrudge him not wanting to sign permanently I guess.

Not sure about that. He's already 25 so not a young player trying to gain experience to force his way into the team. If Atlectico rated him they wouldnt have shipped him out on a full year loan. I can see lots of other PL teams being interested though.

This - he's in the biggest shop window in world football right now! Would love him to sign, but I expect him to end up at Arsenal, Man U, Liverpool next summer - all of whom need a quality centre back and all of whom have more pulling power and financial muscle than us.

Hopefully I'll be wrong though.

Have to say that my main concern at the moment is the future of our defence. There is no current concern, as it has been the bedrock of our excellent start, just a concern that it might be a bit temporary!

Now given where we were May/June, then those at the Club have done well to get such a strong back 5/6, but I do wonder what the chances are of keeping hold of Bertrand & Toby, and to some extent Clyne. If Bertrand & Toby keep performing as they are, then think we might struggle to keep them despite having first dibs. And more solid performances from Clyne could also see the bigger clubs sniffing around.

A decent placing in the League, some sweet talking from Koeman and a bit of luck might do the job, if not I fear we may have another rebuild next summer. Targett, Gardos, Stephens, a n others - I'm not sure, but given their success last year with regards succession planning, I imagine Les & Co are already on it.

If we want him it makes sense to sign him permanently ASAP.

Potentially awkward situation for the club to manage - if reports are to be believed then in Matt Targett we have a player who is admired by bigger and better clubs than us and he hasn't committed his long term future to the club yet. The signing of Bertrand would put him firmly second in line to a starting berth at left-back, and he may be left with a decision - stay at Saints and be backup or join a bigger / better club that play more games where he may start, and earn far more.

Didn't he only sign his first pro-deal last summer? He's a Saints fan, he knows he is in the best place possible to develop his talent, so personally, I don't think he will be doing a Chambers anytime soon.

Not sure any of the top 6/7 clubs are in the market for a LB either.

I believe he signed a 4 or 5 year contract (Targett) last year so LLP's statement is incorrect. Add to that, if he is good enough he will get his chance: most successful clubs have cover in all positions and we are no different.

Keeping them all happy is a different matter.

Am I the only one to read that article and think he doesn't really say what the headline does?

“I think it is one of them things where I’ve got to wait and see,” he said.

“For me, there’s no reason why not, to be honest.

“There is a good base to the club – we’re pulling in the right direction, we have fantastic fans, fantastic players, a fantastic manager and the coaching staff.

“It has been a good experience for me so far, so I don’t see why not.”
