Koeman on Dutch radio

Just heard a short interview with Koeman on Dutch radio:

"The first few days I got tears in my eyes when I saw my players on the training pitch, there was a lot of senseless running and the players seemed not to be able to control the ball. So, there was a lot of work to be done and that has payed off. Although there's a lot of progression to be made, at this moment there are only two teams playing better football than Saints: Chelsea and City. But United will come back as they have the means to do it, it just takes some time to get there..." Looking forward to the match against van Gaal? "Off course, it will be special."

Did the playing level of the PL disappoint you? "No, there are a few clubs left who play the traditional way (4-4-2 and keep on running) but with the arrival of European coaches/managers the level has improved much."

On the Dutch national team: "No, I'm not laughing about the current problems, I've worked with several players in the team and I feel sorry for them. I also like Guus Hiddink though he should have acted differently towards me when he was appointed as manager (Koeman wanted the position of coach of the national team after Feyenoord) but there are no hard feelings left. If I might smile about the current situation it concerns the Dutch FA."

Nothing remarkable I guess but hey, you wouldn't hear this elsewhere... ;)

This is a curious comment.

A feature of Saints' play has been the ability to retain possession and play a highly drilled pressing game. It seems odd to suggest that the players could not control the ball and ran around like headless chickens.

Didnt one or two of the players talk about the fact that with Koeman there was much more emphasis in pre-season of training with the ball and that during the previous pre-season with Pochettino the focus was all on fitness to be able to maintain the ('impossible' ) two hearts 90 minute pressing game?

It seemed odd to me too about the ball control thingy. I'm just going to go ahead and trust in RK though. Who the hell knows what may have been lost in translation.

I guess it depends on your standards. RK is one of the best footballers in the world in the last 30 years, I suspect his standards are very high.

Tonight on Dutch TV an interview with Ronald and Erwin Koeman. Once online I will post the interview and translate the important stuff.

Just to quote myself, the video http://nos.nl/video/714306-koeman--koeman-stelen-de-harten.html

Starts with them going back to When Poortvliet and Wotte were leading the and them saying that Staplewood was little run down.

Goes on saying how far we have come and that we are second the in the league.

Reporter says that unlike our modern redevelped training facilities (where they arent alloud to film) Southampton isnt like barcelone, then names a list of cities Koeman has worked.

Koeman says he didnt expect to be here, and that Southampton is your typical English harbour city.

reporter says some stuff of little intrest.

Koeman goes on saying that the put up pictures of the players in the tunnel.

Koeman says he changed the way the players train and that he has introduced the Dutch school of training.

Koeman goas on saying that at the first training the positioning of the players and everything about the style and the way we played brought tears to his eyes.

The team improved alot and there is more to come says RK.

Reporter asks if we in England do stuff different, RK says he lets Sammy Lee do the pre match talk, who uses f*ck alot in it.

Erwin Koeman goes on saying that RK has made a name for himself in a short time.

Reporter says to Koeman, you want to beat Van Gaal, Koeman replies with yes.

Koeman goes on saying that in the UK the manager invites the manager of the opposition round for a glass of whine.

Then they go on about the Dutch national team.

Reporter asks Erwin Koeman if he and Ronald have the same contract, Erwin says he would like Ronalds contract.

Then Ronald says he likes working with his brother.

My apologies for some of my spelling at times.

Pretty good. I liked the bit about managers sharing a glass of whine.

If anyone else on the forum could translate from dutch to english I think they might be qualified to bring up any errors, but if they can't I think you're qualified to tell them to fūck off! :D

No need to apologise - your English is much better than my Dutch. :)

We all understand, and thanks for your efforts.

don't worry yourself about a few wrong words, Dr.Kucho....we got the message perfectly...and for your info... there are quite a few people on here who can't spell properly in English, too.

I heard the (Koeman) comment about our training programme once before.

He criticised the (Pochettino) method of " all-out running and total ball possession ". Yes our players are super fit, but (RK) said it was a waste of energy and we should concentrate on shorter bursts of activity.

I think fans recall those frustrating games last season when we had 60+ % possession, and 30-40 passes yet couldn't get the ball into the box and finished up 10 yards further back than where we started.

Now, we still rely on max. possession, but to a lesser degree, and are better at winning the second ball, and crowding out opponents.

For interest, we have only had more then 60% in two games this season, away at West Ham(64%) and last Saturday v. Stoke (62%) and even won games v. Newcastle and Arsenal with less than 50%.

Last season.... we had more than 60% possesssion in 22 (of 44 League/Cup games).

We had maximum possession (over 50%) in 20 of those games, but without actually winning the game (that is, we lost or drew).

In two games (both v. Aston Villa), we had over 70% possession ... yet lost 2-3 at SMS and barely scraped a 0-0 draw at Villa Park.

so whilst there is logic in the theory, " when we've got the ball, the opposition have to get it ", some of our performances under Pochettino proved that first-time passing wasn't always accurate, or creative.

Koeman's logic seems to be that players are 100% involved in shorter bursts during a game, and play a pattern that they all understand and using the whole width of the pitch, whilst others (not in the play) find better positions when waiting to become involved in the next move.

It remains to be seen.. if we can keep this squad.. " super fit and injury-free " as most seem to agree that the new additions to the squad are in no way " worse " than those who left it.

Both Lallana and Lambert (for all their excellent skills) both had their limitations, and that perhaps...even Lovren looked better alongside Fonte than he does alongside Skrtel.

Luke Shaw looks ..like he did last season ...but clearly doesn't have the understanding from the MU players around him, who don't know/understand his playing style.

Koeman is obviously happier with his squad now, and his buys... and I look forwad to seeing the (exciting) additions we may be getting in January.

Our current League position obviously makes us a more attractive propositon for any incoming players than we may have looked ...in early August.
