sydney_saint Posted 24 October, 2014 Share Posted 24 October, 2014 Well there goes about half of Lampard's goals using that criteria
trousers Posted 24 October, 2014 Share Posted 24 October, 2014 (edited) From 2006 but I don't think the criterion has changed: http://www.theguardian.com/football/2006/aug/23/theknowledge.sport "As a rule, if the initial attempt is goalbound it is credited to the player making the goal attempt," explained a Premier League spokesman. "However if the deflection means that a wayward effort results in a goal then it is attributed to the player who had the last definitive touch of the ball." Well, that seems quite clear cut that the panel have got it wrong then. Edit: that said, the definition of the phrase "as a rule" is: 'usually, but not always'..... So, maybe not clear cut then.... saint_ed Posted 24 October, 2014 Share Posted 24 October, 2014 Did they get this confused with the Pelle/Bridcutt goal?!
Mowgli Posted 24 October, 2014 Share Posted 24 October, 2014 The only thought that went through my mind that this is sticking two finger up at our challenge of Pelle's 2nd goal (in his hat trick)
scorchio21 Posted 24 October, 2014 Share Posted 24 October, 2014 As someone mentioned, this also means that Tadic holding the joint record for the most assists in a Prem game is now officially untrue. Which is a shame. Until reading this it hadn't even crossed my mind that it was touched by the defender. Even being at the game and after watching it on MOTD I though it was just a tap-in by Mane. scotty Posted 24 October, 2014 Share Posted 24 October, 2014 Out of interest, do Pelle and Mane get credited with assists then? (though as far as I'm concerned, they were both their goals anyway.)
Saint_John Posted 24 October, 2014 Share Posted 24 October, 2014 No wonder everybody thinks this Premier League are a bunch of clowns when they cannot even get the MONTH correct (?! September ?!) 18 September Southampton 8-0 Sunderland Southampton's eighth goal has been credited as a Patrick Van Aanholt own goal and not to Sadio Mane. http://www.premierleague.com/en-gb/news/features/goal-accreditations-for-2014-15.html
Lighthouse Posted 24 October, 2014 Share Posted 24 October, 2014 Pelle's first goal has also been given as an own goal. The initial rebound off the defender's arse was clearly going in, without the minor deflections off Steven Davis and Pelle.
Picard Posted 24 October, 2014 Share Posted 24 October, 2014 People are taking this as an anti-Saints agenda but it could be anti-Sunderland, giving them more own goals.
ericofarabia Posted 24 October, 2014 Share Posted 24 October, 2014 Saints posted it in reply to the FA's tweet telling us the goal was given as an OG Does this Panel of Jokers have any accountability, or is a simple Tweet enough to change the records for all time? Surely they have to present a case, backed with conclusive video evidence and even confirmation from the defender that he made the last contact (even actually touched it all!!) to The EPL Staticians, SFC, SAFC and The Players concerned. Presumably no right of appeal exists either. Furthermore, how can Tadic's assist be wiped out as well? Regardless of who put the ball in the net he still set it up. The9 Posted 27 October, 2014 Share Posted 27 October, 2014 Just watched again on iplayer- simply a bizarre decision. But another complaint ..... which was dished up by some other journos on twitter after the game and by Jonathan pearce on match of the day after Mane's goal. This wasn't Southampton biggest win after the 6 - 3 win over Man Utd with the grey shirt nonsense - The grey shirts was the 3 -1 win.....don't mind the tabloids getting things so wrong, but the BBC? http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b04mm14d/match-of-the-day-20142015-18102014 Martin Tyler said this during BOTH ITV commentaries of Saints v Man U in the FA Cup when we were out of the Premier League. And Jonathan Pearce is an idiot, full stop. As I pointed out at the time, Pearce basically said that Saints' biggest previous win in the Premier League was 3-1, and we beat Newcastle by more than that under a month previously. WABOC's The assist is the last pass before a goal, if it's Van Aanholt's goal, it's Mane's assist. If they haven't given Mane the assist, they're (wrongly) saying he didn't touch it at all, in which case Tadic might have still got the assist depending on how they calculate OG assists. The9 Posted 27 October, 2014 Share Posted 27 October, 2014 Van Persie heads into his own goal ............. goal by Drogba!!! One rule for us etc.etc. Except Drogba's header was definitely on target. We're assuming that they've ruled that Mane's effort wasn't on target as otherwise it would still be his goal even after the significant deflection - though they still haven't explained how they could tell from the existing footage, as the direction of the ball before the deflection was almost impossible to determine. I can only think that they thought Van Aanholt got his foot to the ball first, which is nonsense.
