andoru Posted 19 October, 2014 Share Posted 19 October, 2014 What do you all reckon are the best own goals ever scored for Southampton by other teams? As well as Vergini's brilliant opener in the Sunderland game yesterday, I'm nominating Gareth Barry's precisely placed pass into the bottom corner against Man City last season. Ashtead Saint Posted 19 October, 2014 Share Posted 19 October, 2014 John Arne Riise for Saints against Liverpool in 2002 was a cracker.
Lighthouse Posted 19 October, 2014 Share Posted 19 October, 2014 MK Dons in the JPT Southern final. I forget who but one CB smacked it against the arse of the other and it bounced back into the net.
Sevvy Posted 19 October, 2014 Share Posted 19 October, 2014 A few years ago back at the Dell, I am sure Kevin bond scored one from a long way out as well.
Bucks Saint Posted 19 October, 2014 Share Posted 19 October, 2014 John Arne Riise for Saints against Liverpool in 2002 was a cracker. This. Made better by watching it in a pub with a hundred shirt wearing plastic Liverpool fans
leeham_69 Posted 19 October, 2014 Share Posted 19 October, 2014 Gareth Barry last year, could not have slotted it any better if he tried.
paulwantsapint Posted 19 October, 2014 Share Posted 19 October, 2014 Didn't 1 of the 2003 semifinals goals get given as og? Both MLT 99 v wimbeldon & Dodd Xmas 03 v skates both had goals direct from corners given as og
The Kraken Posted 19 October, 2014 Share Posted 19 October, 2014 I thought I'd never see an own goal as good as Lee Dixon's. But I think yesterday's was even better. Best own goal I've seen.

Saints foreva Posted 19 October, 2014 Share Posted 19 October, 2014 John Arne Riise for Saints against Liverpool in 2002 was a cracker. Wasn't that his first touch?
Lets B Avenue Posted 19 October, 2014 Share Posted 19 October, 2014 Texaco cup match vs Rangers in the mid seventies. Rangers defender knocked the ball back to the keeper from a long way out and it went straight over his head I remember it being more a case of him (Jackson?) slicing a clearance from the edge of his area and it going in a big loop over their keeper. Milton Road end.
Appy Posted 19 October, 2014 Share Posted 19 October, 2014 St Mary's is a hotbed of comedy own goals.
tpbury Posted 20 October, 2014 Share Posted 20 October, 2014 I thought I'd never see an own goal as good as Lee Dixon's. But I think yesterday's was even better. Best own goal I've seen. Think Dixon's is higher quality - he had time and space, picked his spot and turned his back after the shot, confident that he had made the pass back. stevegrant Posted 20 October, 2014 Share Posted 20 October, 2014 Mike Newell when he was at Everton. Even better placement on his header than Vergini's volley on Saturday, similar distance from goal as well. Speaking of Everton, both of the own goals they scored in the game at SMS last season were pretty special. This one is still my favourite, though:
Turkish Posted 20 October, 2014 Share Posted 20 October, 2014 I remember a game in the mid 80s when we beat West Ham 3-2 at Upton Park. Steve Walford went to pass back to the keeper, who i think was Phil Parkes from about 25 yards out and ended up chipping it over him and into the back of net. Was a superb finish.
