Saints duo win awards - Koeman MOTM - Pellè POTM

Obviously, these awards mean nothing to the BBC. Football Focus at 12.10-12.50pm managed to avoid any mention of either award and the name of the team in third place in the Premier League didn't crop up at all. All the usual concentration on the media's favourite few, Man City, Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal. Why don't they rename the programme "Saturday Kitchen" because these, plus Chelsea, are the teams that they stuff down your throat?

It is frustrating, I must admit.

If Di Maria and Van Gal had got it for e.g, we'd have half the programme devoted to the 'amazing job' he's done and the 'special talent' of di maria and what he eats for breakfast.

It's not even accidental any more, it's so clear that anyone out of the top 4 just make up the numbers, they're simply not interested. The only way it'll ever be broken up is the league splitting into 2. Give Utd, City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Madrid, Barca, Bayern their own league - let them play around with each other and do what they want, it might actually give us an opportunity.

While Sky and BT might have reason to favour the "elite" clubs, as they are selling the games, BBC who only have (some radio) and the highlights on a non-commercial basis (ie they don't sell it to people), should offer a much wider focus on clubs. Clubs both lower in PL and outside of PL. But frankly I don't really care too much, save that the constant attention on the elite is one of the factors killing my love for the game, as I prefer to go to the games. Which I must do now. So hasta luego and see you all with (hopefully) another 3 points in the bag. COYS

The BBC are a public service broadcaster. Covering the clubs people are interested in - the bigger clubs - fills that remit.

Let's not pretend the the wider public are interested in seeing "a much wider focus on clubs".

I'd suggest you're not either. It's just a euphemism for "Put my club on more, put my club on more".

Or are you desperate to watch Peterborough vs Barnsley for twenty minutes at 10:30pm on Saturday Night, with big old horrible Premier League clubs like, say, Southampton pushed back to three minutes at midnight? I mean, it's only fair innit?

Being a public service broadcaster (PSB) means far more than 'covering the clubs that people are interested in'. That definition is far more accurate for commercial operators -and the BBC was consciously established as a counterweight to simple market forces. Being a PSB means taking on a far wider range of causes -often unfashionable ones- and looking to educate the public, at least it's original Reithian incarnation.

Up to you to decide whether that means showing P'boro vs. Barnsley at 10.30pm -couldn't give a s**t either way- but in theory the BBC is better positioned to resist the trends we're seeing in the game.

And it does do that, as its support of the FL (vs the woeful ITV era) and its noble if possibly misguided trumpeting of the Women's game also does.

There is a Daily Mail-esque train of thought of that's all the BBC should do, showing the sh it no one else wants to.

Well, its boll ocks. One of the three Reithian principles was "to entertain".

The BBC cover the Premier League perfectlying well, the coverage of the bigger clubs reflect the interest level in those clubs. The fact is, no one apart from West Brom fans really care about watching huge swathes of coverage about West Brom.

Let's keep an eye on this forum. Specifically the non Saints football threads. Let's see, over the next month, how many get started about the CL teams/top 6. And how many get started Alan Irvine's team selection, or San Dyche's post match comments. I expect, this forum's very own Angelman, with his aching need to see coverage of a wider spread of clubs, will take the lead on this.

Tuned in to TalkSport for my sins the other day and there was time devoted to Saints under the question could we be a top 4 club this season. From what I hear radio seems to give more time to the so called unfashionable clubs. All of the callers that I heard (and they were Saints fans) didnt think we could sustain where we are due to injuries and suspensions. Good to hear a balanced piece on us though.
