Spurs 1 Saints 0 - Match and Reactions Thread

Disappointed, but not despondent. We had problems with their pressing play and were not playing as a team very well.

hate losing to Mopo, but what the heck, we will stuff him at home. :)

We lost the midfield battle today. From the very first minute. They were quick with their passing and moved all over the pitch. They were better than us today. No shame in that

We still created a few chances, but you can't miss sitters like that in this league. Horrendous miss.

Forster looked shaky for the first time. Tadic was wasteful and although Pelle had little to go with, I felt he offered nothing as a target man away from home.

Never mind. We caught them when it clicked. Some good fixtures coming up

I thought Spurs utterly average. Our final ball and Mane's shocking finish cost us.

Yes, in possession Spurs were average, but when we had the ball, they did EXACTLY what we did to teams last season - sometimes we couldn't punish sides last year, but we stopped the opposition from playing.

Mane's poor finish did indeed cost us.

No big deal, we were never going to win this and we are still in a decent position. 4 points from the next 2 games should keep us in the top 6. Just annoying that theres another international break. Poor miss from Mane, but he's a player who will frustrate and excite in equal measures

meh couple of pretty evenly matched teams really. Think maybe our shape was wrong, give Erikson too much room & their CBs were too comfortable vs Pelle. Maybe diamond or something next time pls koeman! Liverpool seem to get good results vs Pochetino with diamond!

We didn't get going today, we couldn't handle Adebeyor and Forster looked dodgy on at least two occasions spilling shots\crosses. I also though Tadic and Pelle had their worst games so far and Mane is just going to be one of those frustrating types. To be fair to Spurs they looked much bigger and stronger than us all over the park.

Absolutely, I thought our front men were pretty poor today, an off day for all of them perhaps or just failed their first big test against decent defenders. Nothing whatsover at the sharp end.

If we played as well as we can we would have got something out of this game but we

were below our high standards today, bit annoying it had to be against Spurs though...

If Mane had not missed the sitter we would have had a point and that would have been about fair

The 1st half wasn't great, but I find it hard to see how someone can describe the second half as "rubbish".

By our high standards it was. Just annoying to lose to spurs 5 in a row.

Poor performances all over the pitch. Constantly slow to the second ball, conceded possession cheaply from almost every one of our attacking throws, Adebayor bullied our back line like he'd been possessed by the ghost of mid-2000s Drogba, didn't ever get close to moving the ball quickly enough to evade the press. Should've nicked a point through Mane, but would've been largely undeserved. As an attacking, creative force, Davis is having an absolute shocker of a season.

Some wonderful irony on here. Spurs did to us what we did to many teams last season. They didn't let us play, and smothered us. Last season when we did that, we kept calling for people to recognise the fact that it wasn't the teams we beat who had played badly, but that we didn't let them play. Well, QED - that just happened to us.

Credit to Spurs. Just a shame that the first game when Poch really got them going had to be against us.

Onwards and upwards.

A good summary and spot on.

Koeman also needs to take note today. He has so much data at his disposal with regards how Pochettino teams play. As soon as he realised Spurs had finally got into the rhythm of playing this way then we should have reverted to the hit the channels and bypass the midfield tactics which were the undoing of Pochettino's Saints side on several occasions.

Did you decide this before ko..if so why?

They had nothing to work with. I think the strikers, Pelle inparticular, should be the last people we should be highlighting in a game where we could hardly get the ball too them other than 50/50 balls in the air due to clearing our lines.

Whilst not our best performance, we really weren't that bad, just unfortunate that Spurs played very well and wouldn't let us get into our stride.

We had to lose at some point, sometimes you just have to give credit to the opposition. Shame we've now got two weeks to mull over a defeat.

Not our day really - simple as that. We did not play as well as we can (FF, MS, GP all had a mare). Spuds finally got their pressing game together, but we could still have sneaked a point if Mane had put away the easiest chance he will ever get in the PL.

Sh*t happens - let's hope we get stronger after this? Only thing I would question is why Long did not come on earlier to give that thug Rose a taste of his own medicine?

Not sure how the last man can stay on when Kaboul brought many down. Of it's a foul then it has to be a red.

Mane should have scored, but Spurs stopped us in midfield today.

Shame to lose today as of course we wanted this one just a little bit more, but it wasn't to be. Thought it was a fair result although a point would not have flattered us either. Agreed that the sub was a gamble that didn't pay off and we looked a lot weaker with Wanyama not on the pitch although I am happy that Ronald gave it a pop to try and get the equaliser.

#Koemanout

Bad day at the office really defence looked solid,Forster had a shocker, front 3 offered nothing

Makes it even worse knowing no real footie for 2 weeks

Re Forster - yes he wasn't as composed collecting a few crosses/shots, but he also made a few very good saves. Nothing to worry about there.

Posted

I can't for the life of me understand why Mané pushed (or was allowed to push) inside when the much slower Dier came on for Naughton. He and Bertrand could have taken Dier to the cleaners down that flank, but instead he drifted inside where he lacks the vision and composure to make much of an impact. His miss was hideous. We didn't seem to have an "end concept" for our attacks and Pelle didn't seem to know what role he needed to play. Sure, he didn't play well but we never once gave him the kind of service he needs.

Spurs played out from the back very effectively, and our midfield wasn't able to stop it.

Very, very disappointing.

Posted

Great shame a few of our players were below par today; yet, despite this, we could still have taken something away from this game, so that in itself has to be encouraging – not to mention bloody frustrating.

For the people slaggin off Kelvin before the match, how would he have been worse than Forster today?

He's an abysmal Premier League goalkeeper. Him and Gazzaniga are the worst backups in the league.

Posted

RK will learn from this. Going to White Hot Lane and playing 3 men up doesn't work. We lacked the control in midfield and should at least have played 4-4-2.

Spuds played 5 men in midfield and always had the extra player available whenever we got the possession. Good games from Wanyama and Clyne, but Schneiderlin looked off pace.

Three terrible challenges from Danny Rose - and not even a yellow card.:x

What's the deal with slagging off Forster or any other player in particular? Saints were held back today by some decent pressing play, and as a result, never really got it together as a team. As a result, there were some individual mistakes that were made to look more obvious because of this.

Posted

To sum up today- spurs were first to every second ball seemed to always get the break of the ball in 50 50 tackles, and to be fair to them pressed us very well.

We couldnt really cope with the pressing today and struggled for most of the game in my opinion. Bertrand and mane were probably our best players although no one really stood out in a poor team performance

Answer. The. Question.

How has he not answered the question? Kelvin was a Championship level 'keeper in his prime, now he is 38. I can't think of any reason he would have done better than FF today.

Answer. The. Question.

Do you really think Davis would have done better with the goal or the fumbles Forster made?

This is a goalkeeper who has made a mistake in pretty much every Premier League game he's played for us.

Posted
Answer. The. Question.

Ok. I. Will.

The defence would of lacked confidence in the keeper behind them leading to a lack of composure from the defence and may of ended in more chances for spurs.

His distribution would of been alot poorer aswell.

How would of Davis been better?

Why isnt Davis in the England squad?

Now. You. Answer. My. Questions

I didn't say better, I said any worse.

Of all the things we could be talking about after that game, the goalkeeper was the least significant in terms of impact on the result. Such a pointless discussion IMO.

Davis can catch a looping cross. Davis can hold a weak shot.

As he did when manager of Saints MOpo pressed the opposition when he knew they would play it out from the back. We failed to cope with that pressing conceding possession too often and when we did get beyond the first line of their defence we didn't break quickly. I thought both of our fullbacks were very average going forward, although the back four played defensively. Bertrand had a poor game with the ball. He wasnt alone. Tadic and pelle didn't do nearly enough. Tadic showed flashes early on but littl after the break. When we took Wanyama off we lost our shape for a while. I suppose we had to gamble, but conceding the middle of the park meant we saw no ball at all for about ten minutes.

So has Forster not caught any crosses this season?

Forster has a better command of his area.

All keepers make errors even spilling shots.

Bet u didnt mention Forster after his point blank save against newcastle?
