VectisSaint Posted 3 October, 2014 Posted 3 October, 2014 Incredible to think there were posters (a small but vocal minority) on this board who thought he wasn't good enough for PL football. Perhaps one of Unbelievable school playground posters could dig the names out and shame them on here. Well done Jose, our best CB last season (and for previous seasons as well). Made Lovren look good at times, and helped us get silly money for headless one so that we could bring in better (Toby and maybe Florin). If I ever said anything negative about you then I was probably under the influence or something.
VectisSaint Posted 3 October, 2014 Posted 3 October, 2014 He stands at over 6 foot 3, Jose Jose He took us to the Premier League, Jose Jose He gets the ball without a foul He wears the shirt of Ken Monkou Jose Fonte Southampton's centre back. He's officially listed as 6' 2''. If his eyes are blue we could use the Jim Steele song.

Killers Knee Posted 3 October, 2014 Posted 3 October, 2014 he's come on in leaps and bounds in the last 2 seasons. Well deserved.
buctootim Posted 3 October, 2014 Posted 3 October, 2014 Portugal's central defenders... Pepe - (Real Madrid) Ricardo Carvalho - (AS Monaco) Bruno Alves - (Fenerbaçhe) José Fonte - (Southampton) Thats an impressive CB line up. Its not surprising Fonte has found it hard to break into the team. Carvalho is 36 now though so he has a good chance going forward.
View From The Top Posted 3 October, 2014 Posted 3 October, 2014 Chuffed for him. He's been a top player for us from the moment he arrived.
ericofarabia Posted 3 October, 2014 Posted 3 October, 2014 He's officially listed as 6' 2''. If his eyes are blue we could use the Jim Steele song. Fixed .... He stands just UNDER 6 foot 3 Jose Jose etc etc
Sour Mash Posted 3 October, 2014 Posted 3 October, 2014 Incredible to think there were posters (a small but vocal minority) on this board who thought he wasn't good enough for PL football. Not really incredible. He's improved massively in the last couple of years, even this season from last it could be argued he has improved. Remember he was behind Yoshida and Hooiveld in the pecking order at times!!! But that just goes to his credit even more - there probably aren't too many better examples of someone continuing to work hard, focus and improve themself - an even better example than Lambert it could be argued.
Fitzhugh Fella Posted 3 October, 2014 Posted 3 October, 2014 Schneiderlin was the first foreign player to win his first cap while on the books of Southampton, let's hope Fonte becomes the 2nd.

Very true. He's a much better player than when he joined us.
Jack Posted 3 October, 2014 Posted 3 October, 2014 Very true. He's a much better player than when he joined us. Agree with this. He's fitter and stronger than he ever was and reads the game much better. Been a key player through our rise and seems to be loving the responsibility of carrying on the progress after this summer's turnaround.
Professor Posted 3 October, 2014 Posted 3 October, 2014 Amazing strides he's made. When Saints got to the Prem, quite a few people thought Fonte was unlikely to be capable of the step up from L1 and the Champ but he's outdone that by reaching an international squad. I would never have imagined that by our third season in The Prem we would have 4 international CBs. What a good headache for Koeman.

Fact is that even in MP's first season, he was behind Jos and Maya in the pecking order - his progress last season was phenomenal.
Lallana's Left Peg Posted 3 October, 2014 Posted 3 October, 2014 Schneiderlin was the first foreign player to win his first cap while on the books of Southampton, let's hope Fonte becomes the 2nd. Joint 2nd with Pelle
hasper57saint Posted 3 October, 2014 Posted 3 October, 2014 Well done and congrats Jose you certainly deserve the selection.
Matthew Le God Posted 3 October, 2014 Posted 3 October, 2014 Schneiderlin was the first foreign player to win his first cap while on the books of Southampton, let's hope Fonte becomes the 2nd. What about Tony Byrne? At Saints from 1964 to 1974 and won his first cap for the Republic of Ireland in 1969.
Appy Posted 3 October, 2014 Posted 3 October, 2014 What about Tony Byrne? At Saints from 1964 to 1974 and won his first cap for the Republic of Ireland in 1969. You must have a fun life.
S-Clarke Posted 3 October, 2014 Posted 3 October, 2014 The most deserved call up, ever. Fantastic person, leader and player. After rickie, £1,2m on him was a bargain in the grand scheme of things. It didn't seem it then...he took a drop down etc, but fully rewarded on both sides of the fence.
ThaiSaint Posted 3 October, 2014 Posted 3 October, 2014 Good news and more than deserved. Jos outperformed Jose in the NPC imo but Fonte has matured like a fine wine and has been outstanding the last couple of seasons. Fine Port wine surely?
scotty Posted 3 October, 2014 Posted 3 October, 2014 Fine Port wine surely? Oh, and congratulations José. Thoroughly deserved, if a little late.
Graffito Posted 3 October, 2014 Posted 3 October, 2014 Arguably the most deserving and rewarding of the call ups in recent seasons because of the improvements he's made in his game. Credit as well to the coaches that have worked with him.
rallyboy Posted 3 October, 2014 Posted 3 October, 2014 So is that five members of our League One team that have since gone onto get international recognition, or have I missed someone? Quite an achievement. Guly for Brazil?.....
