Quietly grown in stature, which is slightly odd considering he's captain, and has been brilliant this season so far. Not the first man you think of when reeling off our best players but is pretty much the first name on the teamsheet.

Incredible to think he was bought in League One from an average championship club and is now a Premier League captain. Was also part of that defence that struggled so much when we first returned to the PL.

No doubt I've put the mockers on him, but he's quickly becoming a genuine Saints legend in my eyes. Portugal honours could well follow.

Probably the most improved player at Southampton during the Liebherr era.

He's been our best defender so far this season and he's proven to be an excellent captain. A Portugal cap must be coming soon.

How he hasn't been called up for Portugal I don't know

The old guard of Pepe and Costa who play/ played for huge teams and Neto/ Vezo are seen as the future of Portugal I suppose. Fonte is 30 after all which can't count in his favour.

Player of the season so far for me. He's been unbelievable. Not just his play but he looks like the leader out there. Always talking, always directing. First class.

Hard to imagine were is form has come from.

He had periods in the Championship season and first season back in the Prem when he looked shot but he really has pushed himself to another level.

Credit were credit is due.

Loved the pep talk he was giving to Clyne (and apologies if it wasn't Clyne, I watch these games at 2am having been drinking for 6 hours, so not everything sticks in the brain)

I'm not sure that Jose Fonte was ever a bad player, but he did take what may have looked at first glance like a career risk when he dropped down a division to come here. Well this morning he wakes to find himself the Captain of a top two Premier League team with the best defensive record in the division. So that little gamble (if we call it that) has paid off in spades for him. Fortune favours the brave perhaps.

If I was him I'd celebrate with new Bentley. But please Jose - not black wheels this time.
