whelk Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 (edited) After all the moaning there now seems consensus that all has turned out well. Question is would you want us to buy any of the 5 that left back for the same fee we sold them? Edited 24 September, 2014 by whelk
kaffeemeister Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 no probably not, maybe Callum Chambers. we could have extracted more of a fee from Arsenal with the finished product in 2 years time (don't know how he will get game time in just the RB role) Lallana - sold for a good fee, left the club unprofessionally Lovren - sold for a good fee, forced a move for 'greener pastures' Lambert - sold for okay fee, wanted to move back home (i think most of us are okay with his move) Shaw - sold for a good fee, I think he is as finished as a product that he can be (we can't get more of a fee out of him, and he's very slightly better than Bertrand would will only cost us 1/3 of his transfer fee).
Edmonton Saint Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 No. They have made their bed. I shall enjoy them trying to make that bed comfortable to lie in this season.
SNSUN Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 I'd have Bale back for the money we sold him for! And possibly Ox-C and Walcott. But of the summer lot? No, ta. I like the look of their replacements.
Noodles34 Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 Just to be sure; are these the same players that everyone on here were desperate to see play for England last season? (Loren excepted)
simo Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 Chambers but we are quite well covered at Cb and Dmf so he'd have to continue to be Clyne understudy, but I think giving him the playing time we did harmed Clyne's England chances last season!
oldskoolsi Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 Just to be sure; are these the same players that everyone on here were desperate to see play for England last season? (Loren excepted) Yup. Those were all the players we wanted to play for England and were considered irreplacable, who then played for England, left with rumours of being tapped up whilst playing for England and were replaced by cheaper players, who after 5 games seem to be as good as the players who left. The benefit of hindsight.
Tokyo-Saint Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 Shows how poor England are doesn't it.
Professor Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 Assuming that the loyalty issues hadn't cropped up, I'd rather none of them had gone BUT I would have wanted the squad strengthened. If we still had all five, plus Pelle, Tadic, Gardos and Mane I'd be OK with that but doubt that we would have bought them in without the money from the sales.
CB Fry Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 Still don't think we can ever win a game without utilising the Pochettino pressing system. It's the only way to achieve success in football matches.
Lorne Malvo Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 Still don't think we can ever win a game without utilising the Pochettino pressing system. It's the only way to achieve success in football matches. Well e did against Swansea, we didn't do anything close to what we can until Bony got sent off, then they just sat back 2nd half.
Redslo Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 Well e did against Swansea, we didn't do anything close to what we can until Bony got sent off, then they just sat back 2nd half. I am pretty sure she was joking.
CB Fry Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 I am pretty sure she was joking. Indeed. Just a little joke this morning before I nip off to the stables and then to London to present a new lifestyle and sports magazine show for BBC1.
Redslo Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 Indeed. Just a little joke this morning before I nip off to the stables and then to London to present a new lifestyle and sports magazine show for BBC1. I was going to respond with a clever remark. But I realized it wasn't.
lickierambert Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 I still don't think we've seen the last of Lambert in a saints shirt. Expect him to come back in a super-sub role in a couple of years
Baird of the land Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 I'd bring Chambers back. Yeah Chambers & Shaw in a heartbeat.
Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 Honestly, Bale & Theo aside, no. They've all made decisions to move on - fair play. I'm only interested in the squad RK has assembled now and those he feels are worth adding to the group. If its an old boy being brought back - fine - but its all about the future for me and, for now, the exciting squad with greater depth we have for this season
alpine_saint Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 Assuming Bertrand stays, the only one I would have back from the latest crop of 5 is Chambers.
angelman Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 Just to be sure; are these the same players that everyone on here were desperate to see play for England last season? (Loren excepted) Ah, but are those players playing to a similar standard as they were last year? (Lovren included)
smarmy Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 Would take Lallana back (but not for 25m!) Him and Tadic and J-Rod behind Pelle would be all kinds of awesome. I miss the high-speed drag-backs.
Smirking_Saint Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 All but Lovren for the right prices. They dont turn into bad players overnight after all
saintwbu Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 I'd sacrifice the £16mil we got for Chambers to have him back. But i'm happy with Tadic+£10mil over Lallana, and Toby(if he signs) & Gardos+£6mil over Lovren, and Bertrand(if he signs)+£20mil over Shaw. In dreamworld i'd love the Ox back, think once he rids himself of some injury problems and gets a good run of games he will be a star. Bale and Theo don't count as they were pre Liebherr, but if only aye.
angelman Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 All but Lovren for the right prices. They dont turn into bad players overnight after all Agree, but wouldn't have SRL back.
Jonnyboy Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 I'd take em all but they'd have to earn the places back #squaddepth
Wes Tender Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 The question was "would you buy back the five players who left for the fees that were paid for them?" Not for the fees that were paid for them I wouldn't. After all, those were vastly inflated prices and apart from Chambers perhaps, none of the others are worth that. Indeed, I'm more than happy with their replacements and Lallana and Lovren in particular demonstrated a naked greed and a dispicable ability to employ underhand tactics to ensure their departures. I wouldn't want players with that sort of attitude here anyway, so I wish them both bad luck in their future careers. It increasingly looks as if we are better without them. I might take back Pochettino though; if he would be prepared to manage the academy kids.
Fitzhugh Fella Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 Lambert on loan to cover for Pelle's inevitable forthcoming suspension (3 bookings already)
S-Clarke Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 Not worth thinking about any more. They decided they wanted to go, so they're gone and we moved on emphatically. I wouldn't have any back because we replaced them so well, maybe for squad cover, but as it stands none of them would start in our side at the moment.
View From The Top Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 Chambers. He has just so much potential. The rest we are better off without IMHO.
Saint_Tony Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 Not worth thinking about any more. They decided they wanted to go, so they're gone and we moved on emphatically. I wouldn't have any back because we replaced them so well, maybe for squad cover, but as it stands none of them would start in our side at the moment. Exactly, if we'd started poorly this season we might be wondering what if. We look a more exciting team now. Not trying to be critical, but the counter attacks are a lot quicker without having Rickie drifting in field. Now we have Pelle leading the line well with the others playing off him and it's working well. Our options are now better all over the pitch.
saint1977 Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 Chambers. He has just so much potential. The rest we are better off without IMHO. This - Chambers will get better and better. Shaw is a terrific talent but we definitely got a top fee for him in that position when other areas needed strengthening. Lambert is and will remain and a club legend but for once we've actually had a player for his best years and someone else can pay the medical bills and wages for a change when the legs have gone (also see Harry Redknapp at QPR). Think Rickie is being written off far too quickly up there though, his football brain is very sharp and he's never been blisteringly quick anyway. Lallana - again, got top money for him at 26. No-one doubts his talent but would he fit Koeman's system as well as Tadic does or it looks like Mane will? We've also got Long who is adaptable. Biggest issue for me would be his attitude - and also that type of player doesn't always age well plus there's always been a suspicion about his stamina. Joe Cole is an example of that. Lovren - we've missed him less than I feared but still a quality player IMO. Getting that fee for him has significantly strengthened our options and competition at CB so overall it is working out rather well for us so far. A lot of fans, me included, wanted 2 CBs brought in over the summer so was delighted we did it.
VectisSaint Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 I would have Chambers back, we should never have sold him, the only sale that still really irks me. he is a super player, and will develop greatly in time. Although I hate his attitude I would have Lallana back, we really need him as cover for Tadic, to bring on with 20 to go. Lovren, no thanks, demonstrating clearly that he was flattered by Fonte, and deffo no better than Toby or even Gardos. SRL - he was going anyway, we had the best out of him. Shaw, meh we have Bertrand who is currently as good (but probably won't develop to the same extent as Shaw) and it sounds like Targett is getting close as well. I would like to have Ramirez back though.
Dellman Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 Now that we've replaced them very well indeed, no point in having them back. but I have to admit i didn't want them to go, they were lovely to watch and they were our own which is why we feel there was such disloyalty, but who wouldn't go for those wages? Anyway I would have Chambers back but only to be cover for Clyne who is the star Hodgson overlooked. good job he did overlook him, or he would be gone as well.
Patrick Bateman Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 Chambers for the fee we received, definitely. Lovren, Lallana and Shaw, no, not for those fees. Lambert, for £4m, yes! While Jay and Sam G are out - we do need more back-up and I also believe he's one of those good, positive characters to have around the club.
toofarnorth Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 Lambert on loan to cover for Pelle's inevitable forthcoming suspension (3 bookings already) Just in time for J-Rod to return ;-)
Viking Saint Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 Chambers. He has just so much potential. The rest we are better off without IMHO. This.

Wiggles31 Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 I could see Lambert coming back on loan in January which I would be more than happy with. The others would all be out of our price range anyway.
whelk Posted 24 September, 2014 Author Posted 24 September, 2014 I could see Lambert coming back on loan in January which I would be more than happy with. The others would all be out of our price range anyway. Would his appearances on loan help contribute to the add-on clauses?
berkshiresaint Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 In a word NO! Those who have gone however good they were/are have gone they have become a part of our history. But I wouldn't mind Bale playing leftside whith Dusan on the right.
eurosaint Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 In a word NO! Those who have gone however good they were/are have gone they have become a part of our history. But I wouldn't mind Bale playing leftside whith Dusan on the right. Absolutely this ! No individual is bigger than the club and the most recent departees thought only of themselves, not the club ! Coming back is seldom a good option anyway but I would rule it out regardless !!
whelk Posted 24 September, 2014 Author Posted 24 September, 2014 Many answering different questions - was not would we buy Bale back for what we sold him for as don't think there are many sides to any argument there. Was the 5 this summer and paying same as we got.
L1Minus10 Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 Original question - none of them for the fees we got for them. Lambert back on loan in January as back up to Pelle. Wouldn't sign him for £4.5 million. Lovren and Lallana no chance. Wouldn't want them. ****-poor characters we're better off without. Chambers perhaps but he wouldn't get in the team right now. Shaw is not significantly better than Targett or Bertrand so no.
toe_punt Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 I don't get this love fest with Chambers. He's an donkey. Absolutely no pace whatsoever. We mugged Arsenal for 16mil. I'd pay a small fee to have him back as cover for Clyne, but that's it. I wouldn't have any of them back other than for nominal sums and low wages. I wouldn't have Rickie back at all. Legend? Yes, but now well over the hill.
westmidlandsaint Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 I wouldn't pay any of the fee's we sold for as i think we got a very good price for all of these players and none (possibly Lambert back in his day) are worth what we sold for. I too do not understand the Chambers love in, he is good yes, but I wouldn't have him in my starting line up at Saints.
Bearsy Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 I would take Ramirez on loan from Hull & Boruc on loan from Bournemouth. I think this would fill out our squad nicely!
Whitey Grandad Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 No. Besides, I've already spent the money.
The Kraken Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 I'd have the lot of them, but only if it meant we could keep everyone we bought this summer too. That would be some squad. Although we'd be bankrupt before the summer. So maybe not.
Noodles34 Posted 24 September, 2014 Posted 24 September, 2014 I'd have the lot of them, but only if it meant we could keep everyone we bought this summer too. That would be some squad. Although we'd be bankrupt before the summer. So maybe not. well, we wouldn't though would we not, she is worth £4b. This is chicken feed.
