Hard to take Adam Leitch (the Echo's chief sports writer) seriously when he says things like...

There has been plenty of speculation as to how Saints boss Ronald Koeman might now order his central defence, with Alderweireld and Fonte as right footers and Gardos and Yoshida as left footers.

All four are predominately right footed.

They'll upset a few on here who have been obsessed with having one if each ever since Adkins said something about it when we singed Dan Seaborne.

Interested about the complicated situation regarding the option to buy. Either we have the option or we dont? Or is that implying that Athletico have the option to take him back if they are still interested?

Do we then have first refusal at an agreed price, first refusal of any future price or no option what so ever.

Are we at risk of him having a stonking season, then just being signed by one of the big boys, or kept by Athletico and we get single season wirth of benfit whilst possibly paying his wage?

I think we should hope he plays really well for us, we finish eighth and win a cup.

throw in the possibility he may well want to keep his options open

if CL atletico want him back after a good season, to be a starting CB. He may well fancy it

that or liverpool buy him.

Something is going to have to give at CB. As Turkish says' date=' it pretty much seems Alderweireld has been promised a start. So who partners him - our Captain, our £6m signing, or Yoshida. Well probably not Yoshida, but I can't see Gardos or Fonte being too happy with a place on the bench.[/quote']

It'll be Fonte and Alderwood.

If we are serious about getting any higher than 8th of having any cup run we will need international quality players on the bench as well as in the team, that's the way it is at the top and the players want to be at the top and on top pay,so they've got to get used to the downside---time on the bench

Not sure why everyone is so worried about next season. We have a good player with us for a year, and if he does as well as people 'fear', then it will probably equate to us having a pretty damn fine season.

My general concern with loans is that even if it works out the player leaves and then you have a gap to fill and no funds to replace them in the team. In the short-term you get benefit but in the long-term I don't think it is a clever strategy. I can see why we did it this summer with such a large transition in players, but ideally I wouldn't like to think loaning players (and making them better) factors into our long term strategy for being a successful club. On the other hand you can agree a fee up front but that means nothing unless the player wants to stay. Plus if the loan isn't successful we get to offload them at no cost beyond their wages and loan fee however it also means they've likely had no benefit to the team in the short-term as well.

Remind me how that's worked out for Everton.
