Southampton whiz Harrison Reed gets senior England chance! this is great news for Reed and SFC.

We have several players in the England youth set up, but not regulars in our team, except for JWP. I think our youth that are coming into the first team will be our next golden generation.

JWP is being groomed for a future England CM role.

Reed 19, has been recognized as a very talented CM, being used by the senior England squad is very encouraging that his talents are that good, he hasn't barley had a sniff at first team football and yet he is used by the England national squad, says a lot t me about his quality.

We have Targett, who is rumored to be as good as out 30mil man Shaw.

Rowe had a great preseason and even Isgrove worked his socks off to show he can offer something to the team. How many more are really good and just quietly improving in our youth set up.

My hope is that we can keep these talented homegrown players long enough to have them lead SFC to glory. Maybe the board has learned some lesson from the last sell off of our academy players. They seem to be keeping these group of 19 years old players a little more protected, no point putting them on the PL stage to be poached if we are not ready to hold onto them by refusing big money or not being financial capable to offer competitive wages because of the FFP rules.

I still believe we will not see real progression forward for SFC as a big player unless we increase our off field revenue. Increase our shirt sales. By being the most attractive football club outside of the top 6 to new fans looking for a club that has good footballing pricipals.

Along with Harrison Reed the England senior team during the week also used an Exeter City keeper and Barnsley midfielder to make up the numbers in training. Reed does look promising, but by itself him training with the senior team doesn't appear to mean a huge deal.

Later that day Reed was on the bench for England under 20's, so was the Barnsley midfielder and Exeter City keeper. Looks more like them just using players from the under 20's who weren't going to start for the under 20's that day to make up numbers for the senior England side who were training at the same training ground.

you are missing the point, I am trying to find some logic in what happened this year and try to guess what our board is doing. There is a genius vision here if it comes off!! The sell off of our players may have been the financing we needed to consolidate and to grow as a club, especially our off field revenue to comply with FFP. If we can achieve this we may have a better chance of keeping the next group of academy players (which are waiting in the wings right now). But you have to believe that the academy players are good enough to be future stars in the PL. BIG, BIG ask, but who better than SFC, we have a good record of identifying early-on good players, that are then coached into first team players. NC was raving on about our academy player getting into the first team, our coaches are full of praises, we read good things about them in their youth games.....so why not believe they may have a group that is capable of making the first team. If the board new we have a group of senior players wanting to leave for big money and thought, no problem, we have a group of about 7 academy players who shows just as much promise as that lot. Now, we have about 3 year window before they mature into full PL players. We could be ready by then to hold onto our academy players if we have grown enough within the FFP. If not we will have the reality of being stripped of our players before we get to enjoy them for ourselves. I am sure anyone that is a Saints fan felt the pride of our academy players putting on a Saints shirt in the PL and doing us proud. Lets see if the board have a vision of creating another golden generation to lead out the red and whit army!!! Saints go marching on!!

Yes, I was proud when we had 4 academy players on the pitch in the PL but that looks less likely this season. But the title of this thread is a bit of a fraud as Reed isn't near the full England squad. It's been pointed out that his use in a training game came about simply because he was there with the younger age group and wasn't going to play in his group's match. Lastly, the comment about the actions of the board seems to be on the wrong thread and has already been done to death elsewhere.

It would not appear to be quite so easy for either of these two lads to break into the Saints starting XI now despite Mr Koeman's reputation for developing kids. Seems JWP might be the lucky one of the trio in that he had already made the step up last season but the challenge for him now will be to stay there. The upside maybe that if they can't just walk into our first team anymore, envious glances at our latest Academy stars might be turned elsewhere despite their England associations.

Why is it good news that Reed is with the England squad? To be around a group of overpaid egos who will be ex telling him the virtues of playing at a 'big club' can't be good for our club. Hodgson hardly has a track record of telling our players to stay at the club. No doubt he would be giving him Rodgers phone number

I hate to tell you this, but even the parents of some of our U16s are already of the mindset that Saints are a selling club and merely a stepping stone to the big money - there is absolutely no chance of us keeping anyone if they retain that attitude (and if we continue to sell).

Nice idea, sell on a couple of golden eggs in order to keep the goose. Then we can afford to keep the next lot. Unfortunately it relies on income being increased to ridiculous levels in order to compete in a few years when the next crop are ready and impressing. That's not going to happen, selling an extra few shirts will not make enough of a difference.

So use the £30m profit to buy up other companies to generate income? A different idea, the company I work for make more money from the investments than the product they make!
