Luke Shaw article

I can only recall two occasions when I have seen Luke Shaw use his right foot to kick a ball. For the amount MU paid for him and for his weekly wage, one would expect him to be equally strong with both feet.

Compare him with arguably England's most successful left-footed athlete, Jonny Wilkinson. He spent hours and hours kicking with his right foot until he was comfortable using either. His World Cup winning drop-goal was with his right foot. I doubt if I shall ever see Luke Shaw taking a pressure penalty with his right foot.

I've brought this up in the past, esp after the last game of the season where it seemed more of a problem than any other game. Him getting well up and into the corners and being forced to put it onto his right foot to cross, but instead used the outside of his left with not very good results. It was pointed out that there are some pretty decent players who could only use one foot....Bale? (or has he learnt to use both now?)

Again, you want to say that to the actual pros who play the game. Not talk about it on message board

You are forever telling us managers know better when we question a team selection

Yet managers and pros are wrong now

My initial quote was further qualified by saying he was the best left back according to his fellow pros

According to stats, Carlton cole was a better striker last season than Shane long. Would you agree?

I am not saying anything. I am just telling you what the stats say and what the consensus of what I have found on the Internet says about the best left back in the Premiership. It would appear that going by the stats Baines was better than Shaw. You initially said that Shaw was the best left back. The stats say not.

If the stats say that Cole was better than Long last season then that's fine by me.

Christ! Just six months ago you were lauding his praises and now he's s.h.i.t.e. Pedants all!

There is no way a pedant is going to allow this misrepresentation of the term "pedant" to go uncommented upon.

It does not mean what you think it means.

Then the club have horrifically over spent on long when cole was available for nothing??

Being the better striker etc

What we should do from now on, is dismiss the opinion of managers and players.

Does that mean when people criticise RK you will be fine with it?

Best left back in the league last season bar none. That's my opinion of Shaw and it's as valid as the next one, be that the England manger, a thick pro or 442 journalist. Baines by the way wasn't great last season. He had an injury at the start, took a while to get going and faded at the end. His display at SMS for example was woefully short of an England full back (what on earth am I saying, if Johnson can play for England so can I). Most peoples assessment of him, including Roy's seem to have been on his performances the season before, in which he was outstanding. Again my opinion.

I think bears assessment is pretty accurate. Defensively he was tremendous. No one beat him. Add to that he was strong on the air as well. That back post was his. I would argue that he didn't bust a gut to get back on many occasions, but he was fit not superhuman. On the attacking sense he was a brilliant out. There wasn't a left back in the league that turned defence into attack like he did. He beat players, got to the byline and got shots off. If a couple had gone in his attacking play would be lauded. He will get a couple this season and the word development will be used a lot. One element of his play not mentioned is his decision making. Knowing when to bomb on, when to take his man on and when to stop and go backwards or square were first class last season. In footballing terms he has an old head on young shoulders. Bertrand has started well, but we will miss Shaw at both ends of the pitch.

Anyone interested?

I really don't see why anyone would be interested in writing a bit about how good a player is, who we didn't want to leave go to club we don't like.

it like being asked to give a lift to your ex-girlfriend to her new boyfriends house, which you pathetically agree in a futile attempt to show her how great your are, because if being friends is all you can have then it better than nothing. But then you are driving home alone with the smell of her perfume still filling the car and the radio chews up your Tear for Fears tape probably at the same time as she and Peter Clovis are getting it on. Clare Williams I hate you.

Dont worry, she will probably turn out to be a fat old munter in years to come! ;)

Horrifically overspent? Unlike you to make a sweeping statement Delldays! Long and Cole have barely kicked a ball this season and already you have decided who the better player for us will be? This is why you get so much stick here mate.

At no point did I say we should dismiss opinions. I just pointed out that you made a statement that wasnt supported by the stats (which clearly show that Baines was more effective).

People can criticise RK all they want. I think they should wait a while but hey, you only get 5 minutes on an internet forum before dsome cyber jokey thinks they have you measured up.

Opinions are like ars*holes, everybod has one. The simple fact is that having said Shaw was the best left back in the country (not proven) then you went on to say that you thought that Baines was better last season and threw your dummy out of the pram when I found stats backing your opinion up. You just want to come on for an arguement dont you?

Luke Shaw is potentially the best left back the country has produced. Saints have done the groundwork, Utd now have to refine him more. Whether they have the tools to do it only time will tell. Since the golden generation of Becks etc they have failed miserably, considering the potential they have bought in the last ten years

I have decided using stats. Cole had a better season last year (according to stats) and was available of a free

IMO baines was better last year. It happy to concede that managers and players should know better and take their collective judgement over anyone else's

I initially said shaw was. Then further added to the fact he was in the PFa team of the year

IMO baines was. But that is just my opinion and (according to you) rarely correct

I don't always have time nor the connection to qualify every single post when using my phone

What about Cole's wages? I dont know but I expect the club weighed up the options and decided that Long suited our needs this season and on. Sorry mate but I dont think the club takes into account your opinion on players when signing them.

I dont know their relative ages but isnt Cole pushing on a bit now? Does he play the Pelle role as Long obviously offers somthing different?

Shaw doesnt play for us anymore and it is unlikely that Baines ever will, no matter what they do this season.

Last season has gone, it is this season that it important now and it is all the play for once more.

Baines wasn't as good as either Shaw or Cole when he played last season. He gets caught out a lot defensively and hasn't the pace to recover, people get caught up in the fact he takes a mean free kick/corner which I agree is top notch. Next time you watch an Everton game keep a closer eye on him.
