Has everyone forgotten about Florin Gardos?

Hot on the heels of transfer deadline day everyone seems so excited about signing Toby Alderweireld that Florin Gardos has not got a mention. It's worth remembering that he is a Romanian international centre back and that the reason he hasn't started yet is that he has been unfit/injured. He is also no youngster just developing as a player, but a 27 year old experienced footballer.

Surely, the next couple of weeks give us a great opportunity to get him fit and then to get him into the side? Or does everyone just think we have bought him to sit on the bench as back-up to Fonte and Alderweireld?

Ronald keeps saying about to compete well in the prem you need 2 good players in each position. So would assume in CB:

RCB: Fonte, Alderweireld

LCB: Yoshida, Gardos, Alderweireld*

*I believe Toby can play in either CB position and RB as well, how this works out we will have to wait and see, good to have 4 strong CBs to rotate for cup games etc

Probably because he's a totally unknown quantity. When he's given proof of his ability then I expect most will consider him a bit more. Alderweireld hasn't come here to sit on the bench, Fonte is team captain so that leaves the unknown Gardos as the odd man out.

Could be the Ron has now decided that he's not really up to it and that's one of the reasons for going for TA, particularly as he was saying a week ago that we didn't need another centre-back.

I'm also wondering if TA is really that good that he would automatically get a starting place in centre-defence ahead of the other options.

Doubt he will have spent all that wedge only to find out a week later he can't play. No reason to drop the current shirt holders as they have played well.

Having said that Forren was a few bob.

I notice Forren was making the news this week!

Yup Gardos is 25. Not sure where the 27 comes from... he's still relatively young.

Even that's surprising (and somewhat strange). I never bothered to look at his age and somehow assumed he was an young talent to be developed (and hence taking the risk with buying someone from the Romanian league). At 25 he's probably near his prime and coming from the Romanian league (I'm not being arrogant - his former team Steaua just got kicked out of the CL in the last qualifying round by the Bulgarian champions Ludogorets - and I know just how bad Bulgarian club football is) I can't imagine he's at the level necessary for being a starter in the Prem.

That is the key to good squad morale IMHO as it would be very unfair on either Maya or Jose to be dropped after the last couple of games !

For sure, at some point one of them will get injured or have a 'mare' then the others have to seize their opportunity, that is what the squad system is all about and inevitably that is what happens !

The great thing now is at least we have realistic options which has not been the case until now !

Why would you not drop a player for a better player until he has a "'mare"? Give the squad time to settle, but ultimately, play the best team.

I'm quite excited to see Gardos in action, and I have a feeling I will like him a lot, but I can't see him getting in the team in front of Fonte at the moment. I'm not Fonte's biggest fan as a player but he has been rock solid in the opening 3 games and doesn't deserve to be dropped.

Koeman likes 3 5 2 and this player likes to bring the ball out. There is a lot written on him on the thread when he signed that most of you have forgotten because it wasn't two minutes ago.

Do people think we will convert to 3-5-2 over time? If so, seems odd that he hasn't played it so far, surely pre season would be the time to embed that system.

We didn't have three good centre backs in pre-season. Now we do, he may start using it in training to get them used to it for a plan B later in the season.

If he is going for 3-5-2, it's interesting that his strategy is to wait till he gets the players before he plays the system, wheres Van Gaal played 3-5-2 from the get-go before he had good enough players to do it. I look forward to seeing which strategy works best (as long as it's Ron's).

Not just about the centre backs, though is it. You'd think he would embed it into the team front to back.

We only had one good centre back in pre season but we still played with two.

Funny thing is, Forren played quite well against England the other night. Strange he never made an appearance.
