Savage words

So blond locks Robbie thinks we will go down...after 2 games!

As much as Lawro is canned on the forum he was right when he said he is not sure where the goals are going to come from. Pelle appears to be quite sluggish and although Rickie was at times, he had clever movement, held it up and could ping a decent pass. At the moment Pelle seems to be too slow in the feet and the mind, in the prem you don't get a lot of time on the ball, otherwise he gets taken off you.

Once Tadic ran out of ideas we lost our way. VM and MS are good solid centre mids, defence looks good and FF does look composed and confident, really liking him. I just worry about the creativity up front. Tadic can but we need more. Poor old Long then played wide and it is not his position. Gaston would offer us some options up front when he returns. It was a shame Taider did not come on when Cork did. As much as I like JC I think we required a more forward thinking player.

Away from home I think this is the best line up, it looks solid, but at home I really think we need to be more positive, Pelle is left up on his own and we then start humping long balls to him...which come straight back as he often mistimed his jumps. Surely long balls to the big man up top is not the Southampton way?

Still early days and I am sure the team will gel better once they play more as a unit. I know a lot of WHU fans and I really don't want us to lose next week...please!

And the reason this could not be posted on the post-match thread is what exactly?

And Savage is a gormless idiot, sticking his head in and predicting relegation after two matches, one of which was against last season's runners up, where most of the pundits with more brain cells than Savage thought that we we worthy of at least a draw, or that even a win would not have been an outlandish result.

He said we 'could' go down. He is hesitant to commit because he is an idiot, and will probably say the same thing about a different team every week.

Is this guy now actually a full time member of MOTD? I thought he was allowed a column on the BBC out of sympathy, not respect.

I remember his first guest punditry role on the BBC (can't remember the game, may have been the Euros?). His comments were laughed at by the team and he ended up sitting in an embarrassed silence. Like his new haircut though.

All in your own very humble opinion, based on two results.

its nothing to do with results

we were quite a way off last season, with nearly £100m worth of players in the side

we would have needed to keep everyone, added a Tadic, Fortser and a top striker to get there this season

Well, we'll just have to wait and see, won't we? We would have achieved European football last season, but for a couple of crucial injuries, having to play Kelvin and Gazza for several matches and Fox when Shaw was out, many matches without Wanyama, etc. The team doesn't need to be better than last year's to achieve European football, it needs to be as good. Whether it is or not remains to be seen. That judgement cannot be made now with any conviction, especially when there might be another couple of additions to come in.

By all means ask me after September 1st. But you needn't wait, as I can tell you my response now. It will be that after a mere handful of results, it is impossible to make a reasoned judgement on how a team comprising several new players will fare. That is the position that anybody with a modicum of intelligence would take.

Maybe you want to tell Ralph this, he is the one who said judge him/the club on #septemberONE

Don't like him but on this occasion don't disagree with him. We could go down. Take five or six of the best players out of any other side in the league and all saints fans would be pointing at that side saying they will be one of the favourites to go down. Doesn't mean we will, but no point in putting your head in the sand.

Sweet Jesus. What is your problem? Why do you have to judge all of the time? There have been many changes and Rome wasnt built in a day but hey, lets see where we are on 1st September and if it is not looking good call it a day. I think Ralph was talking about transfers and the squad - not whether we would look like world beaters or not. The Board have already reinvested in the management team and the squad with maybe two more players to come. It is then down to RK and hos team to get the squad firing. A handful of games in will not show you what we will be like come the end of the season. Patience is a virtue.

Yes, you should wait until September 1st at least before making your judgement. I'll wait a little bit longer if it's OK with you. Didn't you read my post? There is no hard and fast rule as to the date that one has to make their judgements on this forum. It's just that those who make their judgements the earliest on the flimsiest of evidence are likely to be the least sensible posters.

Last season we were in that group, we're not anymore though.

How do you know? If you do have those powers of certain foresight, perhaps you'll kindly give me the numbers for the Euro lottery. Liverpool came second last season, but changed their team as much as we have. Are they no longer in that group that could challenge to be champions this season?

Whether or not the muppet Savage thinks we may be in the relegation scrap or not, based on yesterday's performance, and the OK performance against a poor Liverpool team last week , and based on these two facts alone, we look like very strong relegation candidates. If anyone thinks otherwise after yesterday's game then I can only suggest they did not actually watch it. Appalling performance. There are some ostriches on here that think it is OK and that we should give the team time to gel, but the reality is that we do not have time for the team to gel, we needed to hit the ground running this season due to the way the early fixtures have panned out. But, we do have another 7 days before the window closes (or is it 8) and who knows, RK and/or Les may have something up their sleeve, another striker looks the biggest need based on what we have seen so far, but I suspect that will not happen. Have to hope JRod is back a lot sooner than originally thought, based on his own web site that may be possible.

If we're competing for Europe at the end of the season, then I'll happily come and admit defeat.

It confuses me how people use clubs like Liverpool as examples for changing a lot of their team. They added to the quality of the team, they improved the overall quality, they lost 1 player they would have kept - but bought to replace. We've lost so much quality it's frightening, yesterday was a frightening notch down in terms of what I watched last season. And people who say otherwise are sitting with their heads in the sand. You can see we're not as good, it doesn't take 10 games to work that out. We're just not as good.

I cannot see in the realms of the universe how a team who has lost so much quality can compete at the top half of the league.

I guess this is where people come back in and say that Shaw/Lallana/Lambert/ weren't that good anyway.

Why does anyone care what he says...?

........he's no better a football pundit than the average stand-up comic.

There are two types of ex-player; those who want to continue in the game (coach, manager), and those who think they know more ....and who go and talk a lot of waffle on TV.

Watching Sky on Saturdays, I think overall ....MLT is a rare exception to the second category.

At least were not putting all our eggs in one basket and paying £30 million for one player.

Those who have bought in are ....a gamble - exactly as Schneiderlin and Lambert were in L1.....time will tell.

I could quote a dozen (historical examples) of strikers who struggled to get a goal, let alone find good form before - such is the nature of strikers.

I agree - we' re unlikely to reach the same level of success this season as last, but let's not forget that MP also inherited a sqaud, many of whom had been with the club for 3 or 4 seasons.

I'm sure Koeman will get a lot more criticism before he gets the team he wants, but changing players is not like changing the wheel on a car. It takes time to mould a good team.

Many of the newcomers have only been with the club for a few weeks, and may not have played RK's formation before, but I'm sure it will work - in time.

Fans need to be patient .or is that a silly suggestion. too ?

And agree, we do need to be patient. Things will take time, but I'm just trying to say that we won't be at the level of last year and people hoping/expecting that are just going to have 10 months of sheer frustration!

Savage is right, we are just one of many clubs who could go down if we don't sort our sh!t out.

Better squads than ours have been relegated before.

That's hardly providing a deep insight into the game though, is it? I hope the BBC aren't paying him too much for such thoughtful analysis. He'll be telling us next that there are four or five clubs who could win the title.

He is a sh!t pundit but there are plenty of people on here who seem to think we are immune from relegation so he has a point.

This is the very same Savage who used to spout his nonsense on 606 where anyone with an opinion that differs from his (in his words) 'don't know what they're talking about. This is the man who left a club on the excuse he wanted to be nearer to his family but actually moved further away for the money. This is the same man who publicly derides his missus and thinks it's funny.Ignore the pr..k when you can.

Can't really complain about a relegation prediction after 2 games when many people make their predictions before the season starts. But why the BBC pay Savage is beyond me. If he's the best they can do the football world must be very short of knowledgeable people. My recollection of him as a player was that his career was only high profile because of accusations of cheating through simulation and the number of bookings he received. Hardly a role model and someone who's opinion isn't worth a candle.

You don't half post some utter rubbish.

We will not finish in the European spots in the league this season. We won't, simple. And nothing to do with results, we could have won both games 3-0 this season and I'd still say it.

Win the League Cup or FA Cup runners up? Yep, fine. But fifth or sixth place?

Don't make me laugh. Comparing that pi ss-easy prediction with knowing next week's lottery numbers just shows what a rambling lunatic you are.

Saints fans always shoot messengers with bad news....FACT

Nobody has bad news only negative opinions

I think everyone on the forum is happy that some are positive, some are not and some are somewhere in between.

What i think they "shoot down" is the posters (batman) that likes to tell us his opinion (not news) every thread and 65x per day every day.

Youll admit that gets a bit dull

Spot on. Make no mistake we are in a relegation battle this season.

We also need to ask ourselves where are the 37 goals Lambert, Lallana and JRod scored between them going to come from? Given time Tadic, Pelle and Long could click but that is going to take time and personally I don't think we will see the best of them as a team this season.
