Press watch

Given all the s**t that has been thrown our way, I am surprised that the press are carrying on with it. Thought a thread about the negative cr*p that they are throwing our way might be interesting. If it had started back in May, then it would rival the Pompey Takover Saga one in length.

Here is today's effort, surprisingly from the Guardian and not the Mail. I guess that they are trying to be funny.

To be fair it's just The Grauniad's weekly footy photoshop competition... this weeks the subject just happened to be Koeman.

Fair enough, but why choose Koeman save to ridicule him? I know I am getting overly sensitive, but I am bored of the press and their attitude towards us aand I will show some criticism towards the board for not countering it. If most businesses are attacked persistently by the press, they tend to react - the Club just seems to have taken it.

Because most of those that enter wouldn't be Saints fans so go for that angle. Entirely predictable as are the photos from the game with a big club in the guardian, of the dozen or so shots, only three were of Saints in a 'good light'.

Unfunny, even for non-Saints' fans, unoriginal and inaccurate. As for the press in general, they do behave as if everyone interested in football is only interested in about 6 teams whereas football fans follow their own team and are probably all as sick as we are of having those same 6 shoved down our throats all the time.

A Brighton-supporting friend of mine said he read a press item that claimed to be a report on the Liverpool v Southampton game. He said it was all about Liverpool, with just a final paragraph of two short sentences that mentioned Southampton. He said that if it hadn't been for the heading on the report he would have read nearly all of it without knowing which other team was playing!

Love it. A story about Boruc maybe moving to Cagliari and then they have to go and put this at the end.....

Meanwhile, former Saints striker Rickie Lambert has slammed the ambition of Southampton’s owners for allowing ex-Saints manager Mauricio Pochettino to leave for Premier League rivals Tottenham.

‘There’s obviously a reason why the gaffa went and that was the moment it became clear to the players what the ambition of the club was going to be,' Lambert told Fox Sports.

Why? What is the Mail's problem that they have to go on and on and on and on about this sort of ****?

I think that the club were anxious to keep MP and likely offered him a much higher salary. He (seemingly) didn't follow all the banter / rumours in the media and panicked when Cortese left.

Les Reed (in interview) seemed pretty adamant about his daily chats with MP, and may have thought that he would sign a new contract.

I genuinely believe that his move was a shock to many. I don't think MP had faith in a Board (without NC) and it would be interesting to know who he got his advice from.(?) NC ?

His move to Spuds obviously triggered off the player exodus, though it seems that (those who moved) had different agendas, rather than making a mass decision to suddenly go, and L'pool and Man U. exploited that.

I may be wrong on this one, but in the long term we may not regret the loss of all those who left, but time will tell. The press have had a field day on this one, but if Spuds, Liverpool or Man.U. can't kick start their seasons' then the media will move their attention away from us - and onto them .....unless we are sitting in the drop zone in a month or two.

Aside from last season's excellent finish, most people's (historical) perception of Saints are .......of a struggling Prem. side who are mid table (at best), who often struggled and frequently survived.

Koeman will need time to galvanise the squad, many of whom are new to the club.... and he....to them.

I've written the same comment over many seasons, but I tend to ignore the " reliability of League tables " until after game 6 or 7, by which time, you see who has had a lucky/unlucky sides who are the obvious relegation candidates. Aside from one or two who may radically improve, or unfortunately hit a sudden decline through lost form / serious injuries... Few sides move up/down more than 2-3 places overall during the season, and very few new clubs break into those top six places - even for a week or two..

Most others belong to the mediocre mid table sides. For much of last season, almost half the division was covered by less than 6 points.

Many " fans " on here were grumbling (in the last 2 seasons) because the Media ignored us, now they are making up for lost time. It'll change, and next month, it'll probably be someone else's turn.

  • 4 weeks later...
Quite a nice article for once.....https://nz.sports.yahoo.com/football/news/article/-/24999120/

Ossian - Global Sports Editor of Thomson Reuters = big Saints fan.

People would be surprised how many Saints fans there are in prominent positions in big sport and news providers, such as BBC, Sky, ITV, Reuters, PA, etc.

I guess Spuds' need for some sticky tape was greater than ours. But leaving the club because we had a surplus of stationery seems a little excessive.

Still surprised AW didn't take Song back from Barca.

Why would he want to do that, Song makes far more than he's worth, Arsenal don't do that sort of deal, unless it's for a German who'll sell shirts for them. Think the Arse might have a Utd 2013/14 season myself, very weak behind the first team, bought a striker who was sold by Utd because he didn't score enough goals and they probably found out exactly why that was last night.

On a seasons loan, he is far better in the holding role than Arteta thats for sure.

Wenger is what the french would call "rancunier" once you've gone, you've gone, there are no 2 way trips. Wenger could have bought any number of all those DMs he was linked with last summer, why didn't he? because they want too much money. Song earns a veritable fortune at Barca, he's off their pay scale at the Arse and Wenger won't have him back anyway.

If that's the case I hope wet sham are paying his wages in full, plus a hefty lone fee.

I don't know the terms of the loan but Barça were desperate to be shot of him, doubt if they'd pay any of his salary at the Arse because that's a rival club but they might pay a bit part elsewhere just to be rid of him because he'd become an utter liability. Anyway apparently Wenger still believes in a miracle recovery for Diaby who must cost them a pretty penny for absolutely toss all.
