Mr X Posted 17 August, 2014 Posted 17 August, 2014 With gardos out already (hamstring) we are relying on Yoshida alongside fonte to me they don't compliment each other well as a partnership, do you think Yoshida is premiership level? Thoughts
Badger Posted 17 August, 2014 Posted 17 August, 2014 Simple answer, no. Or at least he hasn't shown it over a prolonged period. He is a 'mistake a game' player. which has even been highlighted playing for Japan.
Heisenberg Posted 17 August, 2014 Posted 17 August, 2014 Decent enough as a backup CB. Look at some of the other prem defenders... Chester, Senderos, Dann, Rangel, McShane. Only the top clubs have 2 or 3 great CBs
The Fat Controller Posted 17 August, 2014 Posted 17 August, 2014 Forster Clyne Fonte Wanyama Bertrand Schneiderlin Cork Taider Tadic Pelle Long
beatlesaint Posted 17 August, 2014 Posted 17 August, 2014 He isn't as bad as Jos.......that is as positive a spin as I can put on it
Saint Garrett Posted 17 August, 2014 Posted 17 August, 2014 He isn't that bad. Normally needs a few games to get up to speed though. I don't have too many worried about him playing although we can definitely upgrade in that position.
Alain Perrin Posted 17 August, 2014 Posted 17 August, 2014 I think he's not as bad as people make out. He's not the ideal partner for Fonte though. He needs a big unit, decisive CH alongside him. Although he's come across as a cock, Lovren was that ideal partner.
Wrensup Posted 17 August, 2014 Posted 17 August, 2014 (edited) I would drop Wanyama back to CB and play, Davis, cork and JWP/Taider Edited 17 August, 2014 by Wrensup
radio slave Posted 17 August, 2014 Posted 17 August, 2014 At least we'll see what Forster really has in his locker today Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Mr X Posted 17 August, 2014 Author Posted 17 August, 2014 I think yoshidas main problem is his positional sense at times hes four or five yards behind where he should be,cant knock his effort and attitude though
Roger Posted 17 August, 2014 Posted 17 August, 2014 If you drop wanyama back you lose the defensively shield thst he gives you.
Wrensup Posted 17 August, 2014 Posted 17 August, 2014 If you drop wanyama back you lose the defensively shield thst he gives you. Yeah but you got your 'defensive shield' defending a spaghetti defence. Putting Cork in front of Wanyama means a double 'defensive shield' all be it Cork isn't as good as Wanyama he doesn't need to be as good as Wanyama, if he is behind him.
austsaint Posted 17 August, 2014 Posted 17 August, 2014 If you cast your minds back to last season, Maya had two stints filling in for the injured Lovren and did very well. I don't think he will let anyone down today.
DuncanRG Posted 17 August, 2014 Posted 17 August, 2014 Yoshida has plenty more good games than bad games. He does make some really poor mistakes occasionally but is generally a good player. I wish we had more options to start today but I'm happy to have him as 3rd/4th choice.
S-Clarke Posted 17 August, 2014 Posted 17 August, 2014 We need Wanyama to do a huge job in front of him today! Yoshida's positioning leaves a lot to be desired and is turned way too easily, but he's not as rubbish as people make out. But good enough backup. We just have to hope Florin is decent...!!!
Chez Posted 17 August, 2014 Posted 17 August, 2014 If you cast your minds back to last season, Maya had two stints filling in for the injured Lovren and did very well. I don't think he will let anyone down today. Cant get his display against villa out of my mind. Who is going to mark their big guys at corners. we will miss rickie defensively at set peices. will pelle fill in?
Andy Durman Posted 17 August, 2014 Posted 17 August, 2014 you under estimate Yoshida. He's cool & will not let us down today
Baird of the land Posted 17 August, 2014 Posted 17 August, 2014 Decent defender as is fonte which is the problem. With lovren we had a quality defender to partner a steady one. Really hoping gardos is of that level.
Berkshire Saint Posted 17 August, 2014 Posted 17 August, 2014 Not a huge fan of Yoshida but he stood in for Lovren pretty well last season for a few weeks. Hull away in particular he was very good.
Dellman Posted 17 August, 2014 Posted 17 August, 2014 Yoshida in under rated, he has had some very good games (and a couple of shockers) and we're lucky yo have his quality as cover, get behind him especially today COYR (not L'pool reds)
Patrick Bateman Posted 17 August, 2014 Posted 17 August, 2014 you under estimate Yoshida. He's cool & will not let us down today Agree - I think he's an okay centre back and certainly much better some others in the league as has already been pointed out. He's MUCH better than Jos, by some considerable distance. Jos is there for an emergency really and probably for his banter on the training pitch? Most defences are going to struggle against Sturridge, Sterling, Countinho - and Lallana when fit. So it'll be no shame if we let in a couple of goals today. We just have to make sure we can put our chances away at the other end, that worries me more than Yoshida playing in defence.
austsaint Posted 17 August, 2014 Posted 17 August, 2014 Cant get his display against villa out of my mind. Who is going to mark their big guys at corners. we will miss rickie defensively at set peices. will pelle fill in? Good point. We certainly lose plenty aerially with Yoshida instead of Lovren. Haven't seen enough of Pelle to know whether he can do the job Ricky used to defending corners and frees.
Mr X Posted 17 August, 2014 Author Posted 17 August, 2014 I'm afraid he is a big weakness. I would think Liverpool will target it
Colinjb Posted 17 August, 2014 Posted 17 August, 2014 More important for me is the shielding they get from midfield. If Wanyama is on his game and Yoshida isn't stretched he has a chance. We stayed up two years ago with Yoshida and Fonte. With the right instruction they can do it again.

Thoughts Don't really care whether or not they compliment each other. It's whether they complement that matters. Mind you, it would be rather sweet if they kept telling each other how much they liked each others latest haircut etc ;-)

TwoPints Posted 17 August, 2014 Posted 17 August, 2014 They seemed Ok against Bayer Leverkusen. Thought they did a good job together.
Saint Charlie Posted 17 August, 2014 Posted 17 August, 2014 What are Yoshida's strengths as a defender? Gardos has tood Romanian press that Saints told him he will play in about a month and needs to be ready to go then.
Killers Knee Posted 17 August, 2014 Posted 17 August, 2014 Would like to see CB with pace brought in.
John Boy Saint Posted 17 August, 2014 Posted 17 August, 2014 What are Yoshida's strengths as a defender? Gardos has tood Romanian press that Saints told him he will play in about a month and needs to be ready to go then. Intelligence if you bother to actually watch him he does actually read the game very well when he is doing his main job of defending, sadly though he does punctuate this by playing the odd howler of an out ball that makes him look like he is wearing square boots, which in turn has everyone watching with their heart in their mouths as it re asserts the pressure from the oppos he has just relieved: sadly that one or two moments in a game clouds folks view on him overall. Jose has similar moments but seems to get forgiven. Yoshida was bought to replace/cover Jose and Lovren was bought to partner Yoshida playing in his natural position on the right side of the central defenders. And fair play to Jose he saw this and upped his game which ultimately kept Yoshida out of the side last year.

thesaint sfc Posted 17 August, 2014 Posted 17 August, 2014 I'd rather play Yoshida rather than Wanayama out of position.

Fonte did well last year as he was aware of his limitations. Lovren would try and bring the ball out whereas fonte was safest first.
for_heaven's_Saint Posted 17 August, 2014 Posted 17 August, 2014 Think now many fouls Wanyama gives away, probably best not to have him closer to our box.
KelvinsRightGlove Posted 17 August, 2014 Posted 17 August, 2014 Funny, start of last season many assumed it would be Fonte dropped and Yoshi playing alongside Lovren. Don't really get how he can't he called Prem standard, was a first XI player in our first season up and we survived. Granted he is hardly top level prem, but he can do a job. I like him, but don't really want him as a first teamer.
Professor Posted 17 August, 2014 Posted 17 August, 2014 Yoshida is what he is, number 3 CB in a Premier League side. To have a full international who has just played in the World Cup in that role is really quite good. You can't have three first choice CBs because one would be constantly dissatisfied with bench-sitting and CB is a position where you rarely bring the sub CB on during a game except only for injury reasons or to protect against a booking. Yoshida seems to have been cast in the role of whipping boy by many fans who just take their lead from others. He certainly isn't rubbish because Japan would not have him as a first choice CB if he was, and Koeman wouldn't be content with him. It's true that he has been prone to make more errors than you would wish but he becomes more experienced as time goes on and he may well be a better player now than he was last season.

Saints boy in Leeds Posted 17 August, 2014 Posted 17 August, 2014 The game is already showing that Yoshida is nowhere near PL standard, not even as back up IMHO.

Bewildered Posted 17 August, 2014 Posted 17 August, 2014 Yoshida is prone to losing concentration and any pass longer than 5 yards tends to go to the opposition. Hopefully Gardos being pictured taking part in training prior to the Liverpool match is a sign that he is not far from making his debut.
