sussexsaint Posted 12 August, 2014 Posted 12 August, 2014 Could they do a job for us ? Some great players and some lovely memories.
ant Posted 12 August, 2014 Posted 12 August, 2014 Blimey, I'd forgotten about the little old club shop. My uncle used to take me there to buy assorted bits of club tat with my pocket money. Can't have been very old the last time I went - was it actually situated at the ground?
Norm Posted 12 August, 2014 Author Posted 12 August, 2014 http://normb.imgur.com/ Is this any better?

Mattio Posted 12 August, 2014 Posted 12 August, 2014 Thanks for those! Brings back a few memories from being a kid and taking the tour.
70's Mike Posted 12 August, 2014 Posted 12 August, 2014 The Dell was a dump but you couldnt beat the atmosphere! it was a right dive BUT it was our dive
davefoggy Posted 12 August, 2014 Posted 12 August, 2014 it was a right dive BUT it was our dive It was not a dump. It was a magical place where miracles happened. Can't think of a single match at St Marys that has bettered the atmosphere of The Dell
LeBenali Posted 12 August, 2014 Posted 12 August, 2014 Only started going to games in 1995/1996 so a majority of my Saints supporting life has been at St Marys, but still brings back many memories posting those photos. Thank you for making the effort.
BARCELONASAINT Posted 12 August, 2014 Posted 12 August, 2014 I started going to the Dell about 1970 as a 6 year old and have wonderful memories as man and boy of our old ground. Very different times and very enjoyable. Thank you for uploading those pictures. Gave me something to smile about and remember when football wasn't all about mega million pound players and super rich foreign owners.
buctootim Posted 12 August, 2014 Posted 12 August, 2014 It was not a dump. It was a magical place where miracles happened. Can't think of a single match at St Marys that has bettered the atmosphere of The Dell C'mon it was a glorifed shed - but you're right the atmosphere was electric - especially before the capacity was reduced.
hackedoff Posted 12 August, 2014 Posted 12 August, 2014 The days when football was fun. It all comes in a much better box these days but the contents are not as good.
Toadhall Saint Posted 12 August, 2014 Posted 12 August, 2014 Cheers Norm - a trip way down memory lane.

Would love to see some piccies of the Archers from around then.
Didcot Saint Posted 12 August, 2014 Posted 12 August, 2014 Many thanks for posting those, what great memories, seems like only yesterday was in the car park queuing for tickets at the little windows!
hasper57saint Posted 12 August, 2014 Posted 12 August, 2014 Thanks for the pics Norm.I first went on a very wet Saturday in January of 1957.I was a regular Milton Roader up there in the open getting soaked before plodding up to the Hulse Road Social Club for the dance and a few more wets.
Norm Posted 12 August, 2014 Author Posted 12 August, 2014 When did you take these buddy? Taken in the year we closed and moved to St.Marys. I'm so pleased so many have enjoyed the photos?

Brings back great memories! My first game was Aug' 1956, just months before you. Also made many a visit to the same club in Hulse Road.
niceandfriendly Posted 12 August, 2014 Posted 12 August, 2014 Excellent Norm thanks for that. In comparison to SMS, yes it was a dump. But in comparison to say, ummm... Fratton Park, it's a f*cking Palace!! Miss the place greatly.
The9 Posted 13 August, 2014 Posted 13 August, 2014 It was not a dump. It was a magical place where miracles happened. Can't think of a single match at St Marys that has bettered the atmosphere of The Dell I'm pretty sure Saints 4-3 Norwich in April 2005 destroyed the atmosphere of my final match at the Dell, which was Saints 1-0 Leicester on a dingy Wednesday in late January 2001. Dell-sized mentality.
Norm Posted 18 August, 2014 Author Posted 18 August, 2014 (edited) A few more photos I hope will jog a memory or two. Edited 18 August, 2014 by Norm
ART Posted 19 August, 2014 Posted 19 August, 2014 Chadwick looks incredibly like James Ward Prowse!! Thank goodness JWP doesn't play like David did.
ericb Posted 19 August, 2014 Posted 19 August, 2014 Great memories, my first game at the Dell was 1984 and miss the place massively. Dump or not it was just better fun, better atmosphere and more competitive back then. Also the feeling of a surge on the Milton when Saints scored, and the noise of a properly - hold each syllable till you're almost out of breath - OWTS like we used to get in the 80s on the Milton couldn't be beat.
Norm Posted 19 August, 2014 Author Posted 19 August, 2014 Art, great photo. A great time to be a Saints fan, imo.
david in sweden Posted 19 August, 2014 Posted 19 August, 2014 This was always my boyhood favorite line up ah well ! old memories....judging by the names on the photo....I'm guessing this is pre-season 1963-64
lifeintheslowlane Posted 19 August, 2014 Posted 19 August, 2014 This was always my boyhood favorite line up Ahh such a pure and uncorrupted footballing era we grew up in ...as long as you turned a blind eye to Tommy Traynor's betting irregularities and George Kirby's physical assaults on goalkeepers.
Chez Posted 19 August, 2014 Posted 19 August, 2014 thanks for sharing those photos big bad bob, especially of the changing room, press room and gym. Brought back a lot of memories.
