Morgan's head gone- Update: It has been re-attached

Was delighted to see him in the starting line up (as it pretty much proved he'd been training the whole time and was committed) and can't be critical of his overall performance which was extremely professional.

After a summer of having my eyes opened about footballers' professionalism and loyalty, I was as impressed with him playing the way he did yesterday as I was unimpressed with his tweet.

Schneiderlin is a 'key player' for Ron

Daily Echo: Morgan Schneiderlin Morgan Schneiderlin

Ronald Koeman has backed Morgan Schneiderlin to be a key player for his side this season after bringing him into the team to face Liverpool.

The French midfielder was keen to join some of his former teammates in getting out of St Mary’s this summer and was even left out of the starting line-up for the final pre-season friendly against Bayer Leverkusen as a result.

However, Schneiderlin has accepted Saints’ decision that he will not be sold and returned to training last week.

Despite an extended break due to his World Cup exploits with France and not having played a single minute in pre-season, Koeman opted to throw Schneiderlin straight into the team at Anfield and believes the 24-year-old will be a vital player in the weeks and months ahead.

“I think it was good for him,” said Koeman.

“You saw it in the last ten minutes that he was tired because it was his first match.

“The competition was starting today, yesterday for the rest, and he’s a player of Southampton.

“He will continue playing for Southampton.

“He changed his mind, he changed his mentality and he showed us that last week and he’s a key player.

“He showed his qualities. He’s a strong and good football player.

“He’s very important for our team and it’s normal for me to put him in the line-up.”

It was very much a new-look Saints side that started at Anfield after all the changes of the summer.

Koeman also had to tinker with his tactics during the game and did so to good effect as Saints became far more effective in the second period.

“We had a lot of changes in the team in pre-season, but we had a good pre-season because we worked hard to our way of playing and how we did the high pressing in the second half was a little bit different to the first half,” said Koeman.

“I think in the first half we lost a lot bit of attention in transition to the attack of Liverpool and they got two chances like that, and one was the goal. It wasn’t good defensive organisation for that moment.

“We didn’t create the opportunities that we did in the second half but in total we played well and we deserved a better result and that gives us a lot of confidence.”

Based on their performance on Saturday I wouldn't be surprised if Man Utd put a large bid in for MS.

Their priorities are Kevin Strotman, Aturo Vidal, Benita (apparently) and Rojo.

But there's every doubt that 'Ed' will fail to get a single one of those over the line.

Martin Samuels, chief sports writer and Neil Ashton obviously have an anti Saints agenda.

Whilst Samuels is a very respected journalist he just seems to want to be controversial for the sake of it. I can't take to the man personally but no doubt there's plenty of valid comment hidden within his work.

The Sun are saying today that we've rejected Spuds' latest offer of £17 million.....

Good. It was a pathetic offer which should be met with the derision it deserved. I have been worried that talk of us wanting Townsend for £10 million and Spuds offering £17 million, conveniently equated to the £27 million we valued Schneiderlin at. Otherwise it is in the public domain that we value him at £27 million, so how could anybody be so ridiculously stupid to reckon that we will say £17 million, yep, we'll take that? I'm still anticipating that they will come up with some swap deal, but personally I don't want any of their players, or to deal with them anyway.

If the Townsend link is true, it does make me somewhat wary with them interested in Morgan.

Levy has shafted us more than once.

Mate, Tottenham as a club have shafted us more than once, you can go back to Martin Chivers days !

I remember they way Venables screwed us with a ridiculous low offer for Neil Ruddock which the then transfer tribunial fell for hook line and sinker !

The only time they havent screwed us was when Lowe got a lot of dosh for Dean Richards.

long before Martin Chivers they took Alf Ramsey, I would never deal with Spurs

Agree with that. Ruddocks wages were set Lowe to reduce fee. Following season when he wanted an increase they didn't play ball & he went to Liverpool. Always hated Venables!!

A Spurs ITK on their interest in our players (not good)...

J-Rod

I know there has been ITK from others saying he is not for this window, but I have been very reliably informed that Poch is pushing for him now. His rehab has gone very very well(as I have been posting) and it is believed that he will be back playing properly in the next 3-4 weeks. With his contract length and his refusal to sign a new deal he could well be available now, and Poch does want him, and his versatility is a big plus to being able to reduce the squad.

MS

I can't go into too much detail but I heard something that makes me far more optomistic about us getting him than say others that are getting their info from inside of Spurs. He has NOT accepted he is staying there and is STILL pushing for the move he was promised. His tweet slagging the club is STILL on his oficial twitter timeline and his people are looking into certain aspects of his contract that may have been broken by the club, and I can't say much more than that, other than it may be best for everyone to let him go.

Talked to someone on Saturday very close to one of the players and he believes Morgan will be sold by the weekend.

He didn't go into detail and as i hadn't seen him for about 10 years i wasn't pushing but what he said made a lot of sense. The players think Taider is very good and will probably step into his position once sold and the impression i got was that the players also have the attitude that if you don't want to be here then get rid.

He didn't know about Townsend so the pint i bought him was a waste of money.

The way Morgan played on Saturday i am sure his head had gone missing as well.

If Morgan is sold then Koeman will look just as weak as Kruegar and reed. Koeman has said Morgan won't be sold and that he has accepted the situation. However I would personally be very surprised if Morgan still at club next Tuesday. Not sure if his subdued performance on sat was down to not trying or lack of match fitness. To be fair the whole team was garbage so bit unfair to single him out.

Can see Townsend plus cash coming our way in exchange for Morgan.

Koemans interview after Liverpool seemed to demonstrate a softening to his strong line over Schneiderlin staying. He said anything possible in football etc not that he wasn't going anywhere.

I am led to believe Schneidelin was also not as strong on his tackling again on Saturday. A sign he's saving himself for his spurs move?

of course they do. they want to set a precedent for when they don't want to be here.

MS did seem a little more anonymous on Sat than he usually does.

He has seemed very half hearted in the 2 games so far, he's dropped a level as it stands, it's clear to see. I'm hoping that's just because he's not had a pre-season though.

I'm sure he's just playing at 80% to ensure he doesn't pick up an injury. Its sad but he is too good for Saints, if his value is between £20 and 30m, then he should be on £100 - 150k a week. We are nowhere near a big enough club for him.

Nonsense,ms put in some crunching tackles on Saturday,a couple at full stretch,he didn't look like a man who was protecting himself from getting injured.

Personally i thought he had a good game, seeing as he was playing alongside wanyama who has a similar game.

He has covered more ground in each match so far than any other Saints player ..... and that is without a proper pre season.

Have to admit that one or two tackles haven't had the usual bite and his face isn't the happiest (was it ever though on the pitch?)

Be interesting to see how he interacts when we score.

Nonsense. He is clearly short of his normal level of fitness. I said after Liverpool I though he was a couple of weeks behind the others, and I expect him to be back up to speed next week.

Agreed, anyone who actually watched the match will know that MS put in a full shift and his tackling and ball winning was back almost to top notch. He did look a bit rusty against Liverpool, but that was down to a very short pre-season, 1 or 2 weeks depending on who you listen to. The team as a whole was **** on Saturday, but Vic and Morgan completely snuffed out their attacking midfield, just like their MF snuffed out ours.

Encouraging indicator from the Guly Interview posted on another thread.

OWTS: Whats your thoughts on Morgan’s situation?

GDP: I speak to Morgan a lot about life, not really about football, but I think he’s happy to stay and see what happens at the club, for now.
