Matthew Le God Posted 11 August, 2014 Share Posted 11 August, 2014 I would think that FM ratings of players are about as valuable as a source of information about a player as the opinions of a single competent scout.

Would be surprised if any half-decent club relied on its detailed player evaluations or anything other than initial donkey work. manzo Posted 11 August, 2014 Share Posted 11 August, 2014 Does FM take into account if a player is playing in a lower standard league when giving players ratings? Yeah, they expect players to generally be in ranges relative to the club's position. I had a bit of a "discussion" with them the year after we went down, they wanted me to take down a lot of the player stats, my argument was that we really shouldn't have been relegated with that team, Redknapp was much more to blame than the players! Minty Posted 11 August, 2014 Share Posted 11 August, 2014 Manzo used to be MLGT? MLG v1.0? MLG is like the cheaper, mass-produced modern day equivalent of Manzo. Hell, even I used to do FM stats for a short while after Manzo (or was it before? I can't remember now), but you don't hear me go on about it... The9 Posted 11 August, 2014 Share Posted 11 August, 2014 Soccernomics: "use the knowledge of crowds". Hence the usefulness of FM stats - lots of geeks having a big online argument about how their opinion is best, along with loads of clips of stuff like Arjen Robben sprinting clean past Sergio Ramos at the World Cup for comparable data and Steve Grant controlling the ball over his head from every ground pass he receives. Oh wait, the last one was only relevant to my Southampton IFC team database for FM13. The long and short of it is that Lambert's PA score was obviously hugely underrated for the 10 years he was in L1/L2 because he was clearly a Champions League player in disguise. But no-one knew it - because the number of times a player achieves their maximum PA as set in the game should be negligible, literally everything should have to go right for them, club facilities, training methods, skill development, personal match performances and form, team performances, etc. I did some PA experiments with FM13... As the whole point is that it's a game, what actually happens to players isn't a "prediction", but the skills given are meant to be based on opinions verified by fact and comparison across other teams (and no doubt endless simming by SI) so you'd hope that what they produce reflects reality pretty well. However, the fewer people involved in the process, the less accurate you'd expect the ratings to be - I know MLG has said plenty of times before that when players transfer in he's often not impressed with their characteristics compared to their new team-mates (but he can't do anything about it), and you can imagine that the lower down the pyramid you get the fewer people are actually able to critique players and the less accurate they are. They do at least seem to have the sense to realise that some characteristics can be present at all levels of football (eg pace) and it doesn't necessarily follow that a L2 player will be slower than a Prem one at sprinting without the ball for instance, which is something the likes of PES/FIFA seemed to have a problem with for years. Matthew Le God Posted 11 August, 2014 Share Posted 11 August, 2014 Give up. It's pretty clear it's a database of the world's footballers and offers a wider scouting network than any club could manage. Yes it will be hit and miss, but as a first stop in finding a player, getting age, background etc., you'd be crazy not to use it. You then just obviously send scouts you trust to check out the players in real life. But a huge number of people will never get their heads round that because it's a computer game. They think you might as well be scouting super mario. Although in terms of banging your head and pocketing a ****load of coins, maybe that's how we got Osvaldo. Good point. Turkish Posted 11 August, 2014 Share Posted 11 August, 2014 Let's hope he's a decent defender and a leader. One of the things about Lovren was he was very vocal and organised the back 4. We need to replace this.
Professor Posted 11 August, 2014 Share Posted 11 August, 2014 Just a few thoughts - At £6m he may not appear to be quite in the same class as Lovren at £20m, although Lovren's value only increased to that level after his time at Southampton; He was once suspended for 10 games for breaking a player's leg; He is described on Wikipedia as CB or DMF; Wonder if he is a CB who can also play DFM or a DFM who can also play CB? Although he chose to accept international selection for Romania, he is Hungarian in origin; Could he have opted for Hungary or was he not offered selection by them? Can he speak English? If not, will assimilation into the defence take longer? Despite the above looking on the negative side, Gardos is likely to be an improvement on Yoshida, who still seems to be a little way off adapting to Prem standard, but I had hoped we could do better considering some of the other names bandied about. Oh dear, you are having bad day Goatboy. I was under the impression that he does play CB and that at £6m our scouting team must rate him above Yoshida, who most fans would acknowledge has weaknesses.
