woolies...great loss or good riddance

Now you lot out there are not a bad bunch but I'm really surprised by the self centred attitudes of those who will not see that people are losing their jobs through this. Just, for a few seconds in your hectic lives, stop and think about the people who were a one income family and are now a no income family. That probably they will need to claim benefits until they can find employment.

Cue the 'bl00dy scroungers' comments now!

TDDwas asking us if we missed them as a store - of course all companies that close are going to be disappointing for all the redundancies - it's the purpose of the store that I think we're discussing.

I'll certainly miss them, not so much as they were recently but when I was much younger. They were like an Aladdin's cave to a little boy and I remember buying presents for my mum that I thought were fantastic back then but make me realise what little taste children really have when I look at them now. (Yes, she kept them all)

thank you..im not too sure anyone in general mentioned the loss of jobs when talking harshly about the loss of woolies..

the last time I went in there it sold complete pap (and pic n mix)

even the computer game/music/dvd collection was more expensive than shops near by..

woolies have gone because they failed to adapt/change direction...it tends to happen in business..

M&S nearly went the same way but reinvented themselves to a degree etc...

what sort of shiiiiiiiiiiite you got mate?

DVDs, CDs and toys mostly. Wrestling figures, batman and turtles toys, ten copies of the New Kids On The Block album, about twenty McFly live DVDs, etc. etc. etc.

A load of ****e, literally. The only thing I wanted was the Beth Rowley album. Most of it is going on ebay or to musicmagpie.

Iceland has bought 51 of the stores but none in Southampton. I would have thought the Portswood store would have been great for Iceland as all the students would go there rather than Waitrose. Is there already some kind of Iceland there?

Yes, up towards Bevois Valley by the crossroads opposite Waitrose.

There is also a FarmFoods frozen food nshop a couple of doors away.
