Whitey Grandad Posted 7 August, 2014 Share Posted 7 August, 2014 Duncan Thank you for your interesting profile of me ,that's your opinion , sometimes I can be a little bit irrational , sometimes grammatically incorrect but some of that is to do with the iPad certainly the spelling aspects . I will try to improve my grammar but cannot guarantee it will always be perfect, I did mention a while ago in the excellent the saints A to Z of Saints book has some grammatical errors , I'm not bothered about them and would not have noticed them , it was only a musician who was staying with me for the St Magnus festival , he was reading this book and the suited and booted book , he just happened to be a depute head teacher from Glasgow and asked me whether two players were twin brothers as they were born on the same day and same place . I replied I didn't think we ever had twins playing for us , clearly it was a typo I don't have a go at all bed wetters per sae , But what does get to me is the 24/7 negativity , my impression is that some are doing it deliberately, as they seem get some perverse sense of satisfaction by preaching negativity . We will not all agree about the signing of new players but let's give them a chance at the club My question and it was just that a question as to why sky should think osvaldo was joining the mass exodus along with shaw , lovren llallana , chambers His move is for totally different reasons , his position became untenable at the club and therefore the club had no option but to get rid . I don't think the sky exec sit about discussing ways to stir it . Please re Read my original post comments , all I would like to see is balanced reporting , especially about DO , he was a thug , it was not just not one violent outburst , but two , during his brief time with us . Yes I was equally annoyed and angry about some of the players leaving , but they have gone and you just brush yourself down and get on supporting the next chapter of saints I respect your views Duncan , but I will not change mine,I'm too long in the tooth and I know where my loyalty and heart lies when it comes to supporting the saint and the club Yes I am worried about the forth coming season I'm equally excited . Like every other football fan up and down the country we will belive this our season to win a trophy do well and relegation us the last thing most of us worry about . SaintRobbie Posted 7 August, 2014 Share Posted 7 August, 2014 (edited) "another" striker? we have lost Lambert Rodriguez and Osvaldo since this time last year and have brought in Pelle, I would say another striker is a priority I agree. But I see our overall priority before the end of the summer transfer window being: 1. CB (x2?) [van Dijk looks likely, but I still think we could do with x2 and if necessary we should offload Gus and/or Yoshida to achieve it - Vlaar and van Dijk would be the best news this summer, about as good as Koeman can hope to attract in] CB is highest priority for me. 2. Striker [ings, maybe - we need someone in who can hit 14-15 goals per season, is he up to it?] Nonetheless, I completely agree with Duncan on this. Can't see Jay Rod even playing for us again at the moment. Striker is a top priority. 3. LB [Rojo works for me] 4. Covering RB [schelotto could work as a cover man if needed, can't help but think theres better out there] 5. GK [Forster looking a cert, and we have the goalkeeping coach for him in place] Thats a minimum of 6 players left we need before 1 Sep and ideally have to BUY. SaintRobbie Posted 7 August, 2014 Share Posted 7 August, 2014 To be fair, in this case Osvaldo hasn't played for us for half a year and we actually brought IN a player. I hardly think the media are out to get us but to say we lost a star is a bit sensationalist, we lost a flop. Thats fair - but we lost a striker and we need to replace him. We have one decent striker (unproven in the PL mind) to start the campaign with. Gallagher is technically poor and has a long way to go, should be on loan in the Championship really. Billy Sharp is far from his surname. Mayuka and Maya has never been up there. Come to think of it, there are a lot of Championship standard players at Saints we should offload to ease the wage bill. Rojo can play at either LB or CB so would be a fantastic signing in many ways. Another factor is Yoshida is an able backup, and people forget that with game time, he actually played better than Fonte in a few games last season when he got a run in the side at CB. As for Hooiveld, great guy but I'm afraid I wouldn't play him in a League 1 side. We definitely need a GK, a CB and a striker minimum

That said, if he can do Lovren's role AND cover LB it makes him even more versatile and impressive. But he plays CB for Sporting!! He plays both CB and LB. Bertrand is a natural left back, and as such will be playing LB when available and if we get Rojo then he will be LCB and play LB when Bertrand is unavailable. Targett will likely play cup games. Bertrand is more than adequate at holding the LB position down and making that position in our squad his own. He is a good player, just needs to be given a run of games and I personally think we will take him on permanently next year. All my Chelsea mates maintain that he was their Man of the Match in their Champions League winning final, he is more than good enough to hold down a starting role in our team, even with Rojo in the squad by virtue of him being a CB. I don't know how many times people will have to say that...

Yes, he can play left back as he showed at the World Cup, but Rojo plays as a centre back for Sporting Lisbon. Bertrand wouldn't come to us to play second fiddle, he wants game time. He would have gone elsewhere if he didn't think he'd regularly start for us.

He is completely versatile which is part of modern day thinking - Note Howedes is the Schalke centre back but played left back for Germany at the WC and Lahm as we know can play anywhere. Bertrand will be our starting left back this season and should we land Rojo, he is likely to start at centre back but has the versatility to play in other positions too. Rather than have too many players in specialist positions warming benchs and costing us unnecessary wages - Far better to have less players with more quality and versatility. InterSaint Posted 7 August, 2014 Share Posted 7 August, 2014 Hi all. Long time follower of the site and first time poster. I live in Milan for 6 months of the year with work and the other half in London. Originally from Romsey. Saints fan since I can remember. Thought id get involved and share my views of the Inter lads loaned and linked. I get to around 10 inter games a season. Taider is good prospect but ultimately thinks he is a lot better than he is. Ive heard on the grapevine that he wanted to go to a "bigger club" and moved to the Saints when this wasnt looking likely. That aside he is clearly a talent I just hope he doesnt expect his time in the prem to be easy and actually puts a shift in. He keeps the ball well and sees and delivers to the front men. He is like a slightly less developed Lallana if was going to compare him with anyone. He needs to add the goals to his gam though. The biggest thing that worries me is that its common knowledge that Inter are stone broke and need cash injections to keep up the pressure on the right end of the Seria A table...im sure a bid of £2-£2.5m euros would have secured Taider permanently so its strange that we have only loaned him. Agreed with you up (other than Schelotto as RB cover) until the "BUY" bit. We're clearly using loans as some kind of interim position/FFP wage wangle, I'm fine with that as long as they're good enough. Ideally they'd be purchases, especially in the attacking positions, but maybe putting fourteen people on a pitch transfer window to transfer window without committing to long term wages is how teams who aren't in the CL are going to work in the immediate future? Thank you, very interesting to hear. I wonder if the club might do what they did with Jos in the Championship and loan him initially and make him permanent in January if he's done well. However, there is the additional complication of Osvaldo! I know the club said the buying options weren't intertwined but politically it might suit Saints to have a lever to pull in offloading Osvaldo for good. On a related note, have you seen Schelotto play? The reports that others have had on this site from Inter fans hasn't been positive although he seems like a good influence around the dressing room. Sounds like the club may have cooled on him - mind you I wonder who that medical KBSS mentioned is for?

Lazlo78 Posted 19 September, 2014 Share Posted 19 September, 2014 By all accounts, Osvaldo seems to be doing a great job at Inter scoring goals, getting assists, looking interested during games and not punching teammates in training. It can only be a good thing for us that his Inter stay is on the right course to keep him motivated towards a permanent move back to Italy and to keep his price as high as possible... Professor Posted 19 September, 2014 Share Posted 19 September, 2014 An indication of how player values may change which is one of the risks always involved in player transfers. Osvaldo looked worth the fee when Saints' bought him, given his international status with the Italy national side but few people felt he was a success here even before the Fonte incident. Doubt if many people would want to swop him with Pelle, who has cost roughly half the price. If Osvaldo is now playing well, the pendulum of his transfer value could be swinging, although not sure if Southampton can benefit as I believe the purchase price to Inter (should they want to keep him) was already included as an option in the loan agreement. But if his form guarantees he leaves permanently, its probably a deal best done and the whole episode put behind us.
