angelman Posted 19 September, 2014 Share Posted 19 September, 2014 The book Soccernomics discusses the Lyon approach at length. It is not all bad. Their ideas on how to treat/support foreign players are quite intelligent. Their primary flaw (in my view) is their apparent automatic willingness to sell a player when their valuation of him is met. If nothing else, I think you need to refuse to sell some players even when you are offered enough money both to keep the team winning and to keep other teams from trying to low ball their transfer offers to you. What are the accounts like? There seem to be a certain way of running a business, which is what Ashley does at Fulham. They turned in a £9m post tax profit - but at what cost on the pitch? But then looking at Lovren, while Lyon's valuation was met by Saints, the fact that a year later his value had increased by 235% shows that they probably undersold him. I realise that he had a good year with us on the back of some problems at Lyon, the PL TV money went potty and Liverpool were like kids in a sweet shop. I read a few years ago that as Lyon are listed on the French Stock Exchange they are not allowed to make an operating loss each year. This constraint after a poor season on the pitch led them to sell Lovren fairly cheaply to us and they also had to sell a really good prospect to Monaco for just £5m as they had to balance the books ahead of June 30th or something like that. Saint Without a Halo Posted 19 September, 2014 Share Posted 19 September, 2014 So far Chamber has been faring the best of the defectors he is getting a reasonable game time and playing well in a new position at Centreback! Lambo will not even get a few minutes when Sturridge is back he is already behind Sturridge, Ballotelli and even Borini feel sorry for him he deserves more particularly as keeping his England squad place will depend on game time. Saint Without a Halo Posted 19 September, 2014 Share Posted 19 September, 2014 just watched a reply of the Scousehampton Champions league opener Loveren certainly messed up for the Ludogrets equaliser lucky they managed to sneak home with a rather dodgey last min pen. Finances of French clubs are controlled by a nebulous organisation known as the DNCG. Budgets have to be balanced, proof of financing has to be given, if not they can stop clubs signing players or limit it to a certain sum and serial offenders get relegated...just like that. You can be top 6 in the league but if your accounts a crappy then ou can easily find yourself in ligue 2 just like that. They've stopped a couple of clubs being promoted for financial reasons of late even after they earned the right on the field. Lens had to take their case to the CAS last summer before they were allowed to play in Ligue 1 and a small club who'd been promoted to Ligue 2 weren't allowed to move up and just stopped because it was too late to enter anything other than a local league. The DNCG would have had pompey and qpr in local sunday leagues long long ago.

SW5 SAINT Posted 19 September, 2014 Share Posted 19 September, 2014 And Lyon without Lovren how's that worked out for them then. Please stop citing Lyon, it's a crap hole where they sell any player they can for a maximum amount of money. Even their Golden Boy manager walked out on them because of it. Lyon was exactly what I feared we may have become when we started selling players willy nilly, they do it all of the time though, every season and replace them with cheap imports and youth team wannabees, sometimes they get lucky, usually don't. Awful start this season, absolutely atrocious. Lyon have won the French league about 8 times in a row, in the last 10 years please can Southampton be like them. Kingsbridge Saint Posted 20 September, 2014 Share Posted 20 September, 2014 Interesting to see Brendan Rodgers under a bit of pressure, ironically in a Press Conference on 'talk like a Pirate' day. His persistence with Old Man Gerrard is going to cost him a top 4 finish, and his job. Lallana and the other ship jumper aren't going to come out of it at all well. Feel sorry for Rickie, maybe we can get him back on loan in January. Hammers are my second team for the weekend. If Pochettino is still in the job at Spurs Christmas 2015 I will be amazed. They will win **** all.
Saint Charlie Posted 20 September, 2014 Share Posted 20 September, 2014 Why do people think Pochettino won't last long? Best appointment Spurs have made in years. Next summer they will back him in the window (possibly end up with a couple of ours) and they will be a good side. I know we are meant to hate him etc but when he leaves Spurs it will be for a bigger club, not because he is sacked.

Professor Posted 20 September, 2014 Share Posted 20 September, 2014 Although some people saw the Chambers sale as the last straw in the squad dismantling, in many ways he was the player to cash in on. He doesn't feel like the loss that Walcott, Bale and Chamberlain were when they were sold simply because its not often a club can get the kind of transfer fee that he earned without any real effect on the starting 11. Although he is getting game time, and Hodgson has used him for England, I still don't see him as a great loss, whereas the money has made a far more important contribution to the team strengthening. Professor Posted 20 September, 2014 Share Posted 20 September, 2014 I was very upset by the dismantling of the squad, especially the sale of Lambert, which seemed to be contrary to the stated policy at the time and while the club was without a manager but are there many who would want Lambert in the team now at the expense of Pelle? Lallana's determination to leave was extremely disappointing but would I want him now at the expense of Tadic? I don't think so, even without the injury issues he's had at Liverpool. Lovren left the worst taste in the mouth because Southampton had boosted his career and he had freely signed a 4-year contract. He looked hard to replace, but even with Yoshida covering for him, the team looked OK. The transfer fee has been a considerable boost in allowing team strengthening and with Alderweireld and Gardos in the squad Lovren doesn't seem to be missed. He seems to be having a few problems at Liverpool, maybe the size of the fee is weighing him down, and it could be that he would be doing better if he had stayed here but it doesn't look like we are missing him. Shaw was a loss and however hard Bertrand tries, he probably won't quite reach Shaw's level, but Luke is now on the receiving end of a few negative stories in the media. There's no doubt that big transfer fees do put players under a spotlight that might not be all that welcome unless everything is going well. This is an entertaining thread but I have a feeling that interest in the defectors will fade sooner than I'd expected because without them, Koeman and Les Reed have assembled a quality squad and a good looking team. So far of our 5 defectors 4 are nothing more than bench warmers with only Lovren holding down a place the next best being Chambers with a decent amount of game time as for Lambert will be lucky to get more than 5 games worth of minutes in 10s and 15s all season! S-Clarke Posted 20 September, 2014 Share Posted 20 September, 2014 As everyone was saying, Liverpool had their chance last year and blew it, probably their best for the next decade.
