They want £16m and we offer £9.5 a week before the season starts :mcinnes: jesus wept, when will the board realise that the whole footballing world knows we have flogged off the crown jewels and are sitting on a stack, nobody in there right mind will accept £9.5m when they know we have made 10x that already this summer

Seems odd to go to the effort of flying out there only to have the offer turned down. Threre must have been some soundings taken in order to encourage him to go.

Exactly, they would have had an indication from his agent that there is a chance of this happening. If Reed has personally gone out as well it is encouraging as we must clearly be determined to get this one done, as I believe we hired an Italian middle-man to deal with the Taider / Osvaldo transfer in Italy (this was reported in some Italian media, we had someone out working on our behalf to get the deal done, I imagine this is common practice when looking into multiple deals at once, all in separate countries, it's good to see that Reed thought it would be time better spent personally working on the Rojo deal than Taider.)

Clubs will usually have their first bid rejected, and if this is being reported as £9.5m then I assume that means the rumours of our previous, £11m, bid were wide of the mark - we'll probably now spend some time trying to find a middle ground between what we offered first and what they want, but if Reed is on hand I've actually got some confidence this may get done!

If we kept steaming in with £16m offers for players then they'd ask for £25m surely? £9.5m is hardly an insignificant fee - we paid £1m less for Lovren!

I appreciate that you're a bedwetting muppet with a limited grasp of reality but we've offered €12m and they want €16m.

The link posted above says we have offered £9.5m ???

I understand that normally negotiations are long, but the board made the massive mistake of selling before buying, you cant say that they had no choice, they did and they could of,Spurs were denying Bale was going all summer when they went about there business and they did that so prices were not inflated.we could of held up on a few of them 100%

I wouldn't normally call for the board to steam in and pay the full asking price, but they have got themselves into this predicament

Is £9.5m not around €12m?

So sick of hearing this particular phrase. Someone says it once and everyone else picks it up and follows.

Shut up about the Crown Jewels FFS!

We sold some players. It sucks, but we've all been through the reasons again and again.

Life goes on.

Well aware of what's going on mate, assets, jewels or best players no matter how you describe it,not worth getting upset about it :)

I have an idea. Let's pay what they want.

Like we made everyone pay what we wanted ?? Ralph has been all over the press almost bragging that we sold these players on our terms, whats not to say other clubs are looking at the way we have done business and not thought,I will have some of that.

In before MLG ;)

11,974m euro's = 9.5m pounds

14m euro's = 11,108m pounds

16m euro's = 12,694m pounds

So the difference between what we offered verses what they want is feck all.

Interesting, suggests this deal is very close and is more likely to be the two clubs haggling over various contract stipulations and add ons.

Thanks for the info, I'm quite confident that we'll get him now. If we've offered €12m and they want €16m then one would think some sort of compromise could be reached and his agent must've indicated he'd be up for coming or else we wouldn't still be haggling over the fee

Ha, out by 26 euro. We are entering into the murky waters of third party ownership with this deal - Sporting only own 25 % of the players rights and the rest is owned by an investment company - so imagine this will take time even if we are getting closer to their asking price. Probably another reason why Les has led the 'delegation' out to Portugal. It would be a massive signing if we can pull it off, and the football media might start to back-peddle with their apocalyptic predictions just a little.

Argentinian defender. Hmmm. I wonder if there's another one out there who's a manager now and might gazump us. Brace yourselves! Hope we get him.

poch's ego means he can't buy any argentinian defenders who have played in a world cup final :D

his when I stories wouldn't impress him at all.

I agree with you to a point - I think they should have made more progress on signings before we let the players go, although the World Cup and players' holidays were always going to make that difficult.

However, Spurs are probably not a good example of the way to go because, in their haste, they arguably wasted a chunk of the Bale money on misfits. I'd rather pay over the odds for a good fit than under the odds for a misfit.

My rates were over an hour ago ;), currency fluctuations old chap, maybe Les thinks the Euro is going to strengthen so trying to close it quickly.

That's my worry because Pochettino probably need someone like that as much as we do, and I can't stomach the thought of MP beating us to him.

But I suspect that the Board feels the same way, so I hope Reed has enough latitude (on fee and personal terms) to get this done, and enough sense not to dicker his way to failure.

Spurs are already in for the Argentinian CB at Villarreal and have just signed a different CB from Sporting (Dier). They don't look to be interested, and neither do any of the teams that finished above us last season either, at the moment anyway. Think that we will agree a fee, but then its convincing the player. Don't know how attractive a proposition we will look to a lot of players, currently.

I think Southampton looks an excellent proposition to a player like Rojo. Perform well, increase your value, and use the club as a platform to a bigger club in the future. And there's no reason the club can't benefit from this in terms of transfer fee and output on the field.

Arguably Rojo could potentially get into a big team now, but it looks like no-one's come calling..

They'll want assurances we're signing more, but don't underestimate the pull of the premier league, good facilities, bigger money, a world famous manager and a side that's just finished 8th. Many players won't know our players sold that well, could just think it's normal sale and reinvestment that happens in many leagues each season. It's not an impossible sell is it.

Sign Forster, Rojo, VVD, Redmond and Ings and our squad looks very good. Throw in Samaras too for a laugh. £40m spend? Plus £20m spent, so £60m out and about £90m+ in. Happy days.

Didn't Redmond sign for someone else yesterday?

I agree with most of that, though I think outside perception of the club isn't at all great at the moment. Even if he isn't familiar with the players that have left he is probably familiar with the narrative of the club as one in crisis. Hopefully Les can reassure him, and as you say, some extra dosh in his pocket and a chance to impress in the EPL may well be enough to do that anyway. I think he'd be the first signing that the media would actually sit up and take note of, so would be absolutely brilliant if we could land him. Should also make landing subsequent targets easier as it will start to turn that media-led narrative back in our favour.
