Smirking_Saint Posted 31 July, 2014 Posted 31 July, 2014 If we signed all of them, we'd be looking to do a lot better than merely "stay up". If we hadn't made multiple changes to personel Id say definately, right now Im saying likely
angelman Posted 31 July, 2014 Posted 31 July, 2014 Winston Reid in according to some Facebook page. Not the most reliable source I know but would be a very decent signing. http://www.claretandhugh.info/southampton-see-reid-as-replacement-for-lovren/
Wade Garrett Posted 31 July, 2014 Posted 31 July, 2014 Also factor in that there is a business to run, debt to pay, training ground to fund, agents to pay etc etc. Also factor in that the headline sales figures are just that. They'll include add ons and installments. We haven't banked 90 odd million as people seem to think. If we did it should be obvious that some of it will be allocated to things other than transfer fees. Those factors were there last season as well. Factor in more season ticket money and more commercial revenue.
hypochondriac Posted 31 July, 2014 Posted 31 July, 2014 Can't say I have seen much of Winston Reid. Any good? And if he is at West Ham would they want to sell?
ratio_decidendi Posted 31 July, 2014 Posted 31 July, 2014 Can't say I have seen much of Winston Reid. Any good? And if he is at West Ham would they want to sell? He turned down a new contract with them, so expect club will want to sell instead of releasing on a free next year. West Ham player of the year as well, I think? Wouldn't be the worst signing in the world.
Goatboy Posted 31 July, 2014 Posted 31 July, 2014 Can't say I have seen much of Winston Reid. Any good? And if he is at West Ham would they want to sell? Do you watch football?
Sanjay Sanchez Posted 31 July, 2014 Posted 31 July, 2014 Can't say I have seen much of Winston Reid. Any good? And if he is at West Ham would they want to sell? I think he is a very capable defender and I rate him above Yoshida and Hooiveld. If I was BFS I would want to keep hold of him.
Unbelievable Jeff Posted 31 July, 2014 Posted 31 July, 2014 Across the Spanish, German, French, Dutch, Portuguese Leagues, I can't believe we couldn't sign a good quality, permanent left-back. All transfers are a risk, does that mean we should only ever take out loans? If Bertrand wasn't from Chelsea, but we were signing Aston Villa's average left back from last season, no-one would be impressed. But maybe, just maybe, they haven't found one that fits our syste/requirements. By all accounts we were lookingand scouting Kolo but his performance against Brentford was the last chance and we decoded to pull out.

West Ham player of the year as well, I think? Wouldn't be the worst signing in the world. in fact decidedly better. Like Reid, really solid. Don't know that he'd be cheap though, how much were Spurs offering, quite a bit I think.

warsash saint Posted 31 July, 2014 Posted 31 July, 2014 Cant see Winston Ried fitting into our wage structure.
hypochondriac Posted 31 July, 2014 Posted 31 July, 2014 Do you watch football? Yes. Tend not to watch West Ham though as they are awful.

OldNick Posted 31 July, 2014 Posted 31 July, 2014 Can't say I have seen much of Winston Reid. Any good? And if he is at West Ham would they want to sell? he is a very good brave defender. I would be delighted to get him to us
Killers Knee Posted 31 July, 2014 Posted 31 July, 2014 people need to stop imagining that the money will all be spent on new transfer fees, no-one has actually said that now have they. The general terms "transfer fees and salaries" (sorry don't like the word wages, makes me imagine a line of blokes of a friday queuing up at a factory for a small brown envelope) could easily mean those past, present or future. It would be a very interesting approach if SFC were to pay out all remaining and new contracts for senior players from the £90m, as well as cover the transfer fees. That would certainly be sustainable (assume we stay up) and allow huge investment further down the road.
Ulrich van Gobbel Posted 31 July, 2014 Posted 31 July, 2014 I would be extremely pleased if we signed Winston Reid. An excellent, powerful and mobile 6'3 CB and only 26 years old. He has apparently turned down a £60k a week 5 year deal with Wham though so it sounds like his wage demands are high...or maybe just wants a new challenge elsewhere.
angelman Posted 31 July, 2014 Posted 31 July, 2014 Cant see Winston Ried fitting into our wage structure. Ralph said the money would go to signings AND wages. I don't want to get into the big wage game, but maybe we'll have to!!
The9 Posted 31 July, 2014 Posted 31 July, 2014 Didn't we loan Cork from Chelsea for a while before finally buying him? Would say that that worked out in our favour long term! I'm just pleased that we've got a Premier League player into a gap in the squad. Only need 3 or 4 more and we'll be stronger than ever. We loaned Cork about 3 years before buying him, he played half a season at the start of the Championship relegation near-miss season prior to the year we were relegated, and signed for us back in the Championship after we'd spent 2 years in L1.

Maybe he's getting hip problems from having to hooooooof the ball as soon as he gets it (dig at BFS not Reid's passing)
wild-saint Posted 31 July, 2014 Posted 31 July, 2014 Do you watch football? it seems he only watches the matches of the specific foreign leagues were most of our targets originate

angelman Posted 31 July, 2014 Posted 31 July, 2014 So potentially could we have..... Clyne / Reid / Rojo / Targett or Bertrand
Mallagroth Posted 31 July, 2014 Posted 31 July, 2014 So potentially could we have..... Clyne / Reid / Rojo / Targett or Bertrand Why no Fonte?
Unbelievable Jeff Posted 31 July, 2014 Posted 31 July, 2014 I don't think we'll sign Reid, will go to a bigger club.
Viking Warrior Posted 31 July, 2014 Posted 31 July, 2014 Just heard a 17 y o next Dutch teenage defensive sensation is having talks with the club Hans brinker is sought after by Real Madrid and can plug any shortfalls in most defences Hans has said he would like to progress his career with Ronald keomans A leaked source ( his agent M dodge says he is currently in Southampton speaking to the club)
Mallagroth Posted 31 July, 2014 Posted 31 July, 2014 Oooooops!! Would be a shame if he did get overlooked for a new guy or went elsewhere, feel he deserves to show it wasn't just all Lovren last season.
Unbelievable Jeff Posted 31 July, 2014 Posted 31 July, 2014 Hmmm, just been texted with the name Shinji Okazaki. Don't know much about him apart from he plays for Mainz and plays up front. Anyone know anything about him. In addition to that, apparently the reason for Vlad and Holtby not signing now is they were to be exchanges as part of the Schneiderlin/Rodriguez deal (or at least that was the offer on the table).

angelman Posted 31 July, 2014 Posted 31 July, 2014 Having been linked with selling everyone, are we now being linked with buying everyone?
Mallagroth Posted 31 July, 2014 Posted 31 July, 2014 I think he goes out with a pornstar. He's welcome at our club. So do I, she just doesn't know about it.
Batman Posted 31 July, 2014 Posted 31 July, 2014 Probably been covered. Reported on SSN that was are/have bid for both Redmond and fer
saint_ed Posted 31 July, 2014 Posted 31 July, 2014 Probably been covered. Reported on SSN that was are/have bid for both Redmond and fer I really really don't want Fer.
Polaroid Saint Posted 31 July, 2014 Posted 31 July, 2014 Would be a shame if he did get overlooked for a new guy or went elsewhere, feel he deserves to show it wasn't just all Lovren last season. Fonte was the better 'Team CB' last season IMHO. CB I know that it is all about communication... ...Lovren may well have a better natural footballing talent, I know he has a cracking tackle and header and charges out to clear things; but Fonte was able to 'let him go' and drop. When Lovren played with A.N.Other we lost shape. When Fonte played with an other we held our shape. FFS Jos and Maya were actually a better combo in terms of team shape than Lovren + one!!! Fonte is class, which is permanent, Lovren had good form last season... ...we shall see!
Beckenham Saint Posted 31 July, 2014 Posted 31 July, 2014 So you've finally exposed your pompey evil. Bane him mods!!!! seems quite an excessive punishment!

Ex Lion Tamer Posted 31 July, 2014 Posted 31 July, 2014 I really really don't want Fer. I reckon a better manager than Hughton could turn him into a different player

Anyone know anything about him. In addition to that, apparently the reason for Vlad and Holtby not signing now is they were to be exchanges as part of the Schneiderlin/Rodriguez deal (or at least that was the offer on the table). According to Wiki, Okazaki scored 15 goals in 33 apps for Mainz last season. Good record for Japan scoring 39 goals in 79 apps.
ratio_decidendi Posted 31 July, 2014 Posted 31 July, 2014 I reckon a better manager than Hughton could turn him into a different player Agreed, but it's the same old thing - haven't Southampton already got enough midfielders already? Replacing Cork for Taider is hard to swallow but palatable. Fer, on the other hand, just leaves an extremely bad taste in the mouth. Edit: That Okazaki doesn't look terrible though.
