How much of the £10m will i have to pay personally? Yep nothing.

.

Seems like it's £12m if being reported correctly on SSN.

You don't pay to go and watch Saints? Fair play.

JimWhite: Just heard that striker Shane Long is on the move again. £12m fee agreed to take him from Hull City to Southampton. #saintsfc #hcafc

Christ. If that is true then I give up. In many ways that is worse than not spending anything!

Surely there is much better on the market for that price?

So who's the exciting signing we should go for? The player who will score 20 goals, but is not good enough for a top side and wants to move to the mighty mid table Southampton?

Look Long is a very dull signing in my view and I am underwhelmed - that's my view and I'm entitled to it.

The bloke has never done anything apart from one season with Reading so he's got a lot to prove to me.

Hopefully I'll be wrong........

TBF, Guan did say the other day that our 'massive' targets weren't making positive noises but our other, 'lesser known' targets look good.

To coin a phrase from a much loved ex manager

Pelle and long will score more goals than Rickie lambert this season.

They'll need to. They cost 20 times as much.

We pursued Ings. It hasn't come off (yet). Pretty simple.

I think someone else said this, but it could be a stalking horse to get Burnley to part with Ings and accept our offer, or risk losing Ings for nothing at the end of the season?

My god. Spending 12m on Long when you have Remy available for 9m.

What is wrong with the transfer committe. Long is worth 7m top no more.

I prefer someone foreign who would be available for less. If we pay 12m for a striker might as well take la crème de la crème of most leagues in Europe.

Hope this is just a rumor and no more, agent talk please Saints don t let this be true.

Could be, although it demonstrates that we could pay more if we wanted to

We wouldnt be spending that much for him to sit on the bench either.

I many ways Pelle was the one that was overpriced. Older than Long and no guarentee he will adapt.

Long is a good solid Prem striker with attributes we lack. We have cash and no doubting he will add to the squad.

Of course you are. It isn't the most inspiring signing ever I'll agree, certainly not for the price, but that's the level we're at. I would have preferred Ings but Burnley must be asking for a lot for him. We've sold players for inflated fees this summer, but unfortunately it works both ways. We've only bought 2 players for more, Ramirez and Osvaldo. I remember the excitement when they both signed, and both turned out to be very poor buys. At least the disappointment won't be so great if Long turns out to be another disaster buy!

If there is one thing that pressures a club into selling their player and taking your offer its when you bid more for another player on another team #LesReedFootballGenius.

I do, but ultimately whether it is £8,10 or 15m doesn't won't impact me personally

I would suggest Koeman is involved of course but it just makes no sense to me. Rather worryingly is the way we've been pumping long balls forward at times pre-season - anyone who was at the WBA and Hull away games would have seen how Long performs in this conditions. For every five long balls pumped forward he'll jump into the defender once giving a free kick away, not bother with two, and for the two that go over the defenders head he'll chase full pelt even though the ball is clearly going behind for a goal kick.

I just do not understand what we are trying to do with the balance in the squad. This isn't a striker who fits into a possession based strategy.

Well put, SL runs around like a headless chicken most of the time, so if this is the way we're going jeez......

wow! considering it was his family not liking the grim north as the driver behind the move (ie he was going south no matter what) how do we end up paying so much? there are far better players available for £12m.

Posted

Long was highly thought of at WBA. Form dipped when tensions arose over contract situation.

Might not have been settled up north either.

Possibly a good player that needs a fresh start.

Yeah, potentially :) I think Burnley would rather lose him on a free personally (well, take the risk and attempt to convince him to resign through the course of the season) They'd only have to spend what they receive in transfer fees to replace him, and why take the risk? Obscene PL money is at stake.

Surely, Surely....we can get a much higher quality striker from Europe for £12m? Surely? What the hell do our scouts do if Shane Long @ 12m is the best they can do.

Some of the Ings stuff on here is OTT. Its like his fan club FFS.

Much more like the intelligent signings we have been used to. Young, likely to improve, English, can probably sell for a huge profit in a season or two. Long is an uninspired signing and his value is only going to go one way. It's a waste in comparison to Ings and is a poor signing for 12 million IMO.

Oh dear. They really are putting us through it this pre season aren't they. Long would be a good squad player, no more no less. He definitely is not worth 12million by any stretch of the imagination!!! There must be FAR better options for that money! It smacks of a panic buy at that price to be honest.

It looks as if we've flustered around all summer and are now in the desperation market.

McCormack for 11M, Deeney touted for around 10M. He can't realistically expect to pay less for Long. Prob would have been better off looking abroad but our supposedly amazing scouting network seems to be all over the shop this window.

Don't believe the £12 million Jim White crap and just have a little think about Long and Jay Rod buzzing around the unit that is Pelle. It could work out alright.

Big man, little man ... have we gone back in time? ;)
