Saint_Tony Posted 12 August, 2014 Share Posted 12 August, 2014 We have to be realistic. We hit a glass ceiling very hard last season, and are now very much a mid table side. Long is far from the greatest striker ever, but will get goals for us. The other options are unproven European gambles or targets that are unrealistic like Bony and Hernandez. Quality PL strikers don't grow on trees. And any that are capable of scoring 15 plus goals end up at the top 6 sides. It's time to face facts and accept this is as good as it gets
DuncanRG Posted 12 August, 2014 Share Posted 12 August, 2014 If we are after Long, I wonder whether the idea is to replace some of Lambert's movement and ability to stretch a defence. For me that was Lambert's greatest strength in the Premier League, but we won't be able to replicate that in a lone striker so adding a bit of running and/or width might do a similar job. JoeShmoe Posted 12 August, 2014 Share Posted 12 August, 2014 Long would be an OK addition but 10m, seriously, we'd be a laughing stock We could get Ings for half that and he's all round a better player
S-Clarke Posted 12 August, 2014 Share Posted 12 August, 2014 From a Hull fan: Quick, clever, a bit sneaky. We instantly improved when he signed, and he and Jelavic hit it off from the start. It'd be a shame if he went, so soon, and after being such a big signing for us. But if the circumstances are true, and the offer is £10m, I don't doubt he'll go. krissyboy31 Posted 12 August, 2014 Share Posted 12 August, 2014 I like him as a player and we do need extra numbers up front but wouldn't want to rely on him as No 1 or No 2 striker and certainly not at £10m.
Toon Saint Posted 12 August, 2014 Share Posted 12 August, 2014 If he comes here I'll support him, but it's a dull signing if it happens IMO. Might be a tad on the dull side, but he's a better player than people are giving him credit for. After so much upheaval this summer it makes sense to have a player that is a proven scorer of PL goals. While definitely not prolific, there is no guarantee that taking a punt on a Championship player with potential or an obscure European signing will chip in with 10 goals over the course of the season. We have already signed enough players that while looking good on paper, are ultimately, untested in the PL. Best not to have a whole team of them IMO. Clubs know we have money so we need to pay slightly over the odds to secure the signatures. Looking for a silver lining, at least he's cheaper then Ross McCormack. The only issue I have is the rumoured price! and going by what Hull paid 6 months ago, it unfortunately isn't far off I'd imagine! Personally he's a player who at his age is likely to get worse and certainly not any better. Hull paid a stupid fee for him so if we do buy him we'll have to pay an even stupider one. If we are going to buy british then i'd prefer the younger player with room to develop(ings/wickham/Redmond etc) similar to Rodriguez deal. thefuriousb Posted 12 August, 2014 Share Posted 12 August, 2014 I would like to be the first to write off Shane Long. You are already about 30 minutes late and about 60th in line. The phrase, "you can please some of the people some of the time, but you can't please everyone all of the time" should actually be "you would do well to please just one, once!" saint1977 Posted 12 August, 2014 Share Posted 12 August, 2014 Not horrified by the prospect of Long signing but not excited at that price either. Blunder not to have replaced departures as we've gone along and consequently we'll pay over the odds for the 3-4 further signings we need by the end of the window. He does have the advantage of PL experience which is sorely lacking in the squad now and is ideal for the scrap to avoid the bottom third of the table. Had been very impressed by Tadic, Pelle, Bertrand and Forster but time will tell on this one. Seems to have a decent attitude at least. CB from Steaua sounds better. Still need another CB and a winger if Long and Gardos come in.

Rich102 Posted 12 August, 2014 Share Posted 12 August, 2014 Was disappointed with Long initially but thinking about it he makes sense as a replacement for J-Rod (either injury or transfer wise). He's quick, has a good first tough and good work rate, and played in that position that lack of goals won't be such a problem. Also first impressions were that Pelle was even less mobile than Lambert so will need a runner up front with him at some point. 10mil seems a lot still... JxgrSaint Posted 12 August, 2014 Share Posted 12 August, 2014 If we're after pacey forwards I don't see why we aren't going for the likes of Yarmolenko (who's been linked to Wet Spam and Stoke for about £12m), Mertens, Muniain or Vela in the £10-15m bracket

Ivan Katalinic's 'tache Posted 12 August, 2014 Share Posted 12 August, 2014 If Pelle is going to be first pick centre forward then whoever comes in will need to provide competition initially from the bench. Clearly Long may be that option, if he's the man RK wants to do that job. A Huntelaar type won't do that and Pelle hasn't signed to do that. Long offers a different lone front man option - pace & guile rather than height & strength - or a good player to play alongside Pelle.

Beckenham Saint Posted 12 August, 2014 Share Posted 12 August, 2014 80 goals in 307 club apps (28 in 146 in the PL) are not the stats of a striker to get excited about. This guy loves to take a tumble and seems to spend more time sulking than scoring. I haven't seen much of him to be honest, but have never thought much of him when I've seen him play. Would rather have Lee Barnard back if we want someone to not score and wind up the opposition defence and fans!
Baird of the land Posted 12 August, 2014 Share Posted 12 August, 2014 If Pelle's first choice then we should be buying someone with potential to overtake him in long run rather than someone starting the slide backwards like Long.
