Saints Pre Season Thread

It's all well and good winning five games in pre-season but it has a touch of the Championship Managers about it. Smash it in the warm ups, get utterly ruined in your first few matches.

How silly of them. Much better to have lost.

Bit if a weird comment. Not sure how anyone can tell much from pre season games. The test will be when we start competitive games.

Why did you open your mouth with Kelvin in goal :(
it makes me sick, there we have 4-5 players who moved on for higher standard football and big wage rises and the ONLY player who has resisted gets all the sly digs and any goal that goes in is always his fault. KD could have signed for WHU for a massive wage rise, and about to sign but after talking to NC who persuaded him to stay and be part of the great things he had in mind for us. He turned the money and PL football down to play for us in L1. His outstanding performances in many games saved us vital points in both promotions. A lot of you should be ashamed. We grizzle when players leave for big money and when they don't you go and use them for scapegoats

Honestly think he's close to being on the SWF banner. We would still be in L1 if not for Kelvin.

No. Just... no.

I respect him for staying here and not going to sit on West Ham's bench but it was hardly a Le Tiss-esque display of loyalty. He earned very good money staying here and got to play first team football. I doubt he has forfeited a monster pay rise.

We wouldn't be in League 1 without him either. He is a good 'keeper but there are others out there, he isn't a unique talent.

A new 5 year deal for JWP is in order I think. When he starts to impose himself on games more (like tonight) what a player he is going to be!

Hope he gets games next year in his natural position and not shunted out on the right as Poch seemed to do.

You are wrong, he could have doubled his wages. I was lucky to have an insight into the dressing room from a mate in those seasons good and bad. KD really cares. Once having Rudi and the Dutch defender both by the throat at halftime because they didn't care enough. I don't know KD but he is a very important part of our climb up the leagues

I know it's only twitter but can I just say that Jan Kluitenberg comes across as a thoroughly decent bloke.

Seems like a genuin guy that are happy here (although a bit cheesy at times but might have to do with some language barriere...??)

Noubt wrong with people doubting his ability so long as it is not personal jibes.

Kelvin has been a class act for us, remember seeing him on the pitch the league one promotion and you could tell how much it meant to him, cracking pro.

Anyway ... somebody at the game fancy giving us some ratings? I know it is really subjective but nice to get a few perspectives :D personally I hope Isgrove looked good. Think he looked rather good v bournemouth and would love to see the lad finally make his breakthrough with us this season!

Good match. Dominated first 60 minutes and switched off a bit at 3-0. New boy did okay at left back. Is grove very sharp and energetic. Pelle is getting little service though and seems frustrated.

Yep, thought we were pretty good again, controlled and dominated the game, gave the opposition very little, similar to Bournemouth and Swindon games.

Thought we could have created a but more for Pelle though.

Good performance from us against what has to be described as a dire Brighton side, who only had a shot when Davis gifted one to them.

Tadic, JWP and Clyne the standouts for me. Tadic is class, just need to get him on the ball as much as possible in dangerous areas. He combined well with Clyne, who JWP kept finding with some superb long range passing.

Isgrove was very tenacious and lively, almost a better player off the ball than on it from what Ive seen against Bmth and Brighton. Would probably make a decent sub option.

Bertrand looked decent, Targett ok but in the two games Ive been to I havent seen anything to back up this talk of him being anything close to Shaw - he simply isnt.

Fonte was good, but Yoshida worries me. Can be very tidy but too often gets done with a simple ball down the side.

Pelle needs a goal, didnt have his best night. Will stop there regarding him.

Steven Davis good as normal, Kelvin made one contribution and it was awful. We are obviously bringing a keeper in but I have no idea why he needed to get 45mins tonight, would be better to give Gazza game time surely? Or Boruc, who for all his good handling and saves is ****ing terrible with the ball at his feet.

Was also the first game in a while not to feature a mistake from Hooiveld, so I was happy about that! The bench role suits him better.

Decent performance all told. Tadic and Clyne linked well on the right, Bertrand looked good on the left considering he'd not have trained much with the team beforehand. Tadic has a good range of skills and was many levels above Brighton. Isgrove was clearly giving it everything to impress and did well; gave their right back a particularly difficult time in the 1st half. Davis and Ward-Prowse kept us ticking over nicely with good prompting and Wanyama was rock solid in front of the back four. Pelle lacked service and was looking for early balls which didn't fit with our patient passing albeit with width. Boruc and Fonte gave us confidence at the back, which was lost when Kelvin came on for Artur. I'm sure Ronny will be pleased but Liverpool even without Suarez will be much, much better than a disjointed Brighton.

As others have said, decent all round performance, good passing and marking was pretty good too. First time I've seen Targett and was impressed, controlled the ball well, got stuck in, and was looking to get the ball into the box when possible. Bertrand was good going forward but a bit rusty in defence, at one point in the first half he had a Brighton player running at him with the ball and looked like he was a rabbit caught in the headlights. Isgrove showed a lot of determination and effort, not quite as impressed as some others as I didn't really see much of an end product coming from him, but definitely has potential to be a decent squad player. Tadic was great, and Pelle looked like he was having an off day, really should have scored at the end.

Agree with what's been said. Quite a few positives. Some nice passages of play. First time I'd seen Isgrove play and he wasn't just hungry he was starving. Hope he continues to develop, impressed with him. Ran his nuts off all night long and never have up.

Well said. Kelvin has been fantastic for us, whatever role he's played; keeper in the lower leagues, club captain, goalkeeping coach, club mentor. How quickly people forget, but we still expect loyalty from the mercenaries shipping out as we speak.
