Jake Hesketh still can't get off Eastleigh's bench in the national league. Sad to see how bad things have gone for him and Josh Sims. Two talented players.

Yeah strange with Hesketh, thought he would have a good career around championship level but seems to not be the case. Has he had any bad injuries?

Ditto. I don't think he had any injury when he went to Eastleigh, he just struggled to get a club but went to Eastleigh saying he just wanted to play, but he isn't getting a game.

I understand that he had options to play at a higher level but didn’t want to relocate from the South. Surprising to see him not be the first name on the team sheet at that level.

I was impressed enough when he featured in a Saints shirt to be surprised he only got loans to league one and didn’t become a championship level player. Shows how small the margins are in football.

Jordan Turnbull currently on TV playing, and scoring, for Salford in the FA Cup. Came out of the academy but I don't think he ever actually played for Saints.

I think he played for our second string alongside Jack Stephens and then went to Swindon his home club, but moved on from there until he eventually signed for Salford.

Also scored a crucial penalty v Pompey in last season’s Papa Joe trophy final shoot out. Nice guy by all accounts

Went to Swindon on loan about the same time as Jack Stephens, a few days after Les Reed had come out and said that our philosophy was not to send players out on loan. Turnbull is from Trowbridge by the way (same as Nathan Dyer), not sure that makes Swindon his home club although it was where he started as a youth player before he joined Saints Academy.

Swindon is definitely the nearest League Club to Trowbridge, so if proximity is the definition of home club that fits.  It is also the only league club in Wiltshire of which Trowbridge is the county town.

Bristol Rovers would have been his nearest league club when he was born (they played in Bath). Swindon is also technically not in Wiltshire these days. But I jest, I live in Wiltshire, well aware of the County Town, I guess by your user name that you do as well, or at least did at some point. Trowbridge was definitely very much in the catchment area of the Saints Satellite Academy in Bath, but I can't find any evidence that Turnbull was ever connected with the Bath site, it seems like he was recruited to Southampton directly from Swindon.  🙂

Only just realised we resigned Olly Lancashire.

Was reading that he scored for the B team last month and thought to myself I can't believe he's still at the club.

According to wiki: 'Signed as a support player role that will see him play and train with the clubs B team and under 23 side in order to help progress the players mentally and set a standard of good behaviour.'

Unusual sort of move.

Lloyd Isgrove playing at RB for Bolton in a FA Cup replay on BBC2. Stockport gave Bolton a good game in the original tie but conceding 2 in the first 5 minutes, one of them a comical own goal. These two were playing in the Champ in the 1990s, with Stockport’s financial backing they will be back in the FL before long.

Edit - gives away a penalty which Paddy Madden converts. 1-2, it’s a good game and sounds a good atmosphere. Worse things to watch midweek. Now 1-3 with another stupid goal.

Recall them knocking us out of the League Cup as well. Rupert was so impressed he appointed Dave Jones at the end of the season.

Remember Egil scoring a couple in a 2-2 draw up there and lost 1-2 at the Dell. Posted on here recently that Souness tried allegedly to resign afterwards. Marsden played very well for them in the replay, Paul Jones the keeper, Alun Armstrong up front, the signing that never arrived. Less said about the left back though…

Dowie’s header OG a beauty in an earlier round when they knocked out W Ham. Quigley 2-3, cracking first half. Kept Barrow up last season in a higher division. Well worth watching this game.

I had forgotten that Marsden was at Stockport. I recall him at Wolves; although he only played eight games for them ( relative up there rated him but said he was shown the door due to an incident off the pitch). Armstrong was linked for a while, but it didn't happen and he never really reached the levels expected.

Have to say that Stockport are one of those clubs I still harbour a minor dislike of, and was happy to see drop out of the league. Bit like Tranmere, and Wrexham (1974) really.

Of the Stockport signing, Jones was better than his reputation (although carried an error from time to time), and still think he was an unnecessary one with Maik Taylor here. Lee Todd .... no further comment other than up there with some of Branfoot's signings (David Lee for example).

It may be me, but it seems that players who score own goals often make amends by also scoring at the right end. Chris Nicholl once took this to an extreme by scoring all four goals in a 2-2 draw (when playing for Villa).

Shame Scott Marshall didn't develop this trait, might have been our top scorer at the end of October one year if he had.

I follow the progress of those lads who "didn't make the cut"  in the Academy, (that last year can make or break  Prem. career dreams).

Last count I got counted past 30 who play / have played in the lower divisions, but some are still going strong.  It's an uphill task, and they make

a lot of moves along the way but still manage a good career at  L1 and L2 , and having Saints Academy on your CV is a good recommendation.

Interesting to see that Ollie Lancashire, (whose career was marked by red cards and own goals ) finally clocked up over 300 EFL games, and then

came back to help coach our  B team, ( dominated by teenagers, and young prospects) whilst they played against Prem. clubs  U23 / first teamers.

NIce for him, but I bet Staplewood never looked like it does now - when he was in the Academy.

Ryan Seager has turned up near me, at National League Dorking Wanderers - https://www.dorkingwanderers.com/post/ryan-seager

Good to see that he's getting back to a better standard. He's had a horrible time and when he was at Havant a couple of years ago it looked that was it for him. He's since done well at Hungerford, and he's still only 26. Hopefully he can carry on his recent form and can stay injury free.
